Rocking math at school with hypnosis: Effective reduction of math test anxiety with an audio hypnosis intervention in a school setting
<p>Math as a school subject causes anxiety in many students. Previous results show that male and female students do not differ in their math performance. However, female students are more affected by math anxiety than male students, so that they might hesitate pursuing STEM careers. Actively<br> addressing math anxiety requires an intervention that reduces anxiety, changes attitude, and provides positive experiences. Hypnosis interventions are particularly suitable for this. Therefore, we developed a 30-minutes audio-hypnosis intervention and tested its effectiveness in this study. We randomly assigned students into an intervention group (N = 29) and a control group (N = 38). All students performed two real math tests at school. The intervention group listened at least once to the hypnosis audio intervention between both math tests. Immediately before each math test, we assessed state-math anxiety (measured with STAI-S). To investigate performance differences, we<br> analyzed students’ math performance scores in both math tests. Our results show that the hypnosis intervention led to a significant reduction in state-math anxiety, t(28) = 2.42, p = .022, Cohen`s dz = 0.45. Math performance did not differ significantly between math tests in the intervention group. Female students generally had higher trait math anxiety (as measured by SIMA scale) and showed a greater reduction in state math anxiety due to the hypnosis intervention, t(18) = 2.86, p = .010, Cohen`s dz = 0.66, compared to male students. It is possible that reduced state math anxiety could result in improved math performance in the long run. Overall, we conclude that our hypnosis intervention reduces math anxiety, especially in female students. Therefore, it is a promising method to promote especially females at an early point in their career and encourage them to choose STEM pathways. The final goal would be to establish hypnosis-based interventions at school encouraging students to activate their resources and develop their potential in all fields.</p>
Randomised controlled trials in schools
<p><strong>Dr Martina Ferracane </strong>and <strong>Dr Fiammetta Menchetti</strong> presented on the open science best practice from the randomised controlled trial (RCT) conducted by seven doctoral and post-doctoral researchers from the European University Institute and University of Florence in 2021-2022. The RCT involved around 1000 students from different high schools in Italy with the objective to measure the impact of certain creative digital course on students’ interest in STEM and on certain skills including creativity and grit. The webinar focused first on the process implemented to data protection, including the protocol followed for data gathering and data processing with full respect of GDPR, and illustrated the steps needed for an objective and transparent data analysis. Finally, it showcased how the data will be made available for reproducibility.</p>
EVALUATION OF EDUCATIONAL POLICIES FOR EMERGENCY REMOTE EDUCATION AND THE POST-PANDEMIC: A STUDY BASED ON THE LEGAL FRAMEWORKS OF THE STATE SCHOOL SYSTEM OF RORAIMA, BRAZIL
<p>This article provides an assessment of the legal framework built during the social isolation phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, by the Federal Government and the State Government of Roraima, regarding the provision of Emergency Remote Teaching (ERE). This is a research with a qualitative approach, developed through document analysis and bibliographical research, with the selection and categorization of all educational regulations issued by the Union and the state of Roraima in the years 2020 and 2021, as well as articles that deal with of the theme of ERE in the Scielo database and in the Capes Catalog of Theses and Dissertations. The normative instruments that sought to guarantee the right to education of children, young people and adults in basic education when school attendance was prohibited were highlighted. Among the main conclusions, it was found that the lack of infrastructure and technological knowledge of school communities were obstacles, as the bibliography shows, even though legally there was a significant effort from the Roraima Government, to guarantee autonomy to schools in offering ERE.</p>

Raw data of: Spelling training "Errorless learning" using Tablet PC in elementary schools
<p>Mobile devices and multimedia content have recently played a central role in conveying information and ideas. In addition, these can also be used effectively for individualized learning situations. Successful mastery of writing and reading skills is considered a key competence for academic and professional success. Particular difficulties in spelling often show a high degree of persistence without appropriate intervention. Based on a BMBF-funded research project, a tablet-based spelling training program with handwritten input and direct feedback on word correctness was developed and applied. The data sets are raw data showing the development of children's spelling skills. They also include the writing movement and pressure of each letter of all children. The data sets indicate that the children's spelling improved as a result of the individualized tablet application.</p>

<p>The dataset comprises 12 items on the topic of "self-efficacy on climate change" and additionally some items on person-related information. The items were developed with individual self-efficacy (8 items, iSE1 to iSE8) and collective self-efficacy (4 items, coSE1 to coSE4) in mind. The instruction was: "How do you think about yourself? Please tick to what extent the following statements apply to you" [translated from German]. A six-point Likert-type scale was used as response scale, headed with numbers from 1 to 6, only the ends of the response scale were verbally labelled (1 = "strongly disagree" to 6 = "strongly agree" [translated from German]). The items were used in German. The English translations were added to the dataset in square brackets. Data collection took place at German "Gymnasien" (equivalent to grammar schools) in 2022. The data set includes N = 163 school-students.</p>

Enhancing algebraic equation solving in upper elementary and middle school students using an algebra balance model
<p><span>This </span><span>study investigates the effectiveness of Level I, the first seven lessons, of the Hands-On Equations balance model in improving the equation-solving skills of upper elementary and middle school students. Fourth</span><span>-grade (n = 123) and eighth-grade (n = 105) students from eleven classes in the United States participated in this study. </span><span>A </span><span>pretest-to-posttest</span><span> design was used to evaluate the performance of </span><span>the students </span><span>on six algebraic equations, including three equations with the unknown on both sides of the equal sign. </span><span>The students were provided with a six-question pretest prior to classroom instruction on the system, a posttest following Lesson 6 using the manipulatives, and a posttest following Lesson 7 without the manipulatives. Students were allowed 15 minutes for each of the tests. Each question answered correctly was given 1 point, regardless of the difficulty level of the question. Although the question paper had a field to enter the check for each problem, only the value for <em>x</em> was used to determine if the problem was answered correctly. The study sought to measure the effect of the program on the 4th grade, 8th grade rural, and 8th grade suburban groups. It also sought to compare the 4th grade results to an 8th grade benchmark. The data set includes the testing instrument, the pre- and post-testing data for each class, as well as an item analysis for the three groups. </span></p>

<p>This dataset is for the research article titled Exploring Scientific Reasoning and Genetics Self-efficacy as Predictors of Secondary School Students’ Achievement in Genetics Concepts. The data were collected using three instruments (Lawson’s Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning (r = 0.76), adopted from the Lawson's Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning designed by Lawson in 2000; Self-efficacy in Genetics Concepts Scale (@ = 0.88),adapted from Schwarzer and Jerusalem (1995) General Self Efficacy Scale and Biology Self-Efficacy developed by Baldwin, Ebert-May and Burns (1999); and Students’ Achievement Test in Genetics Concepts (r = 0.78), self-designed by the athors) from 336 Secondary School Two (SS2) biology students selected from nine secondary schools randomly selected from three local government areas in Oyo State. SPSS version 26 was employed as the statitsical software, while data collected were subjected to mean, standard deviation, percentages, ANOVA and Multiple regression analysis at 0.05 level of significance.</p>
