Dataset: Active learning streamlines development of high performance catalysts for higher alcohol synthesis

<p>In this repository there are five Excel files, three Jupyter notebook files, and a zip archive containing Origin files.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Full_catalytic_performance_data.xlsx file comprises all the experimental and computational catalytic data complied as a part of the research work titled "Active learning streamlines development of high performance catalysts for higher alcohol synthesis" carried out at the Advanced Catalysis Engineering group, ETHZ. The Source_data.xlsx file and .opju files contain the raw data used to create the display items in the manuscript.</p> <p>The repository contains three additional files "Modelling_Data_Phase_1.xlsx", "Modelling_Data_Phase_2.xlsx", "Modelling_Data_Phase_3.xlsx" which contain the curated data to run the Gaussian process -Bayesian Optimization algrotihm across three specific active learning Phases devised in this study. The python codes necessary to run the model are provided as Jupyter Notebook (.ipynb) files and are also available on GitHub in the link provided below.</p>

Data from: Which specimens from a museum collection will yield DNA barcodes? A time series study of spiders in alcohol

We report initial results from an ongoing effort to build a library of DNA barcode sequences for Dutch spiders and investigate the utility of museum collections as a source of specimens for barcoding spiders. Source material for the library comes from a combination of specimens freshly collected in the field specifically for this project and museum specimens collected in the past. For the museum specimens, we focus on 31 species that have been frequently collected over the past several decades. A series of progressively older specimens representing these 31 species were selected for DNA barcoding. Based on the pattern of sequencing successes and failures, we find that smaller-bodied species expire before larger-bodied species as tissue sources for single-PCR standard DNA barcoding. Body size and age of oldest successful DNA barcode are significantly correlated after factoring out phylogenetic effects using independent contrasts analysis. We found some evidence that extracted DNA concentration is correlated with body size and inversely correlated with time since collection, but these relationships are neither strong nor consistent. DNA was extracted from all specimens using standard destructive techniques involving the removal and grinding of tissue. A subset of specimens was selected to evaluate nondestructive extraction. Nondestructive extractions significantly extended the DNA barcoding shelf life of museum specimens, especially small-bodied species, and yielded higher DNA concentrations compared to destructive extractions. All primary data are publically available through a Dryad archive and the Barcode of Life database.

Data from: Peripheral TNFa elevations in abstinent alcoholics are associated with Hepatitis C infection

Substantial evidence supports the view that inflammatory processes contribute to brain alterations in HIV infection. Mechanisms recently proposed to underlie neuropathology in Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) include elevations in peripheral cytokines that sensitize the brain to the damaging effects of alcohol. This study included 4 groups: healthy controls, individuals with AUD (abstinent from alcohol at examination), those infected with HIV, and those comorbid for HIV and AUD. The aim was to determine whether inflammatory cytokines are elevated in AUD as they are in HIV infection. Cytokines showing group differences included interferon gammainduced protein 10 (IP-10) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα). Follow-up t-tests revealed that TNFα and IP-10 were higher in AUD than controls but only in AUD patients who were seropositive for Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Specificity of TNFα and IP10 elevations to HCV infection status was provided by correlations between cytokine levels and HCV viral load and indices of liver integrity including albumin/globulin ratio, fibrosis scores, and AST/platelet count ratio. Because TNFα levels were mediated by HCV infection, this study provides no evidence for elevations in peripheral cytokines in "uncomplicated", abstinent alcoholics, independent of liver disease or HCV infection. Nonetheless, these results corroborate evidence for elevations in IP-10 and TNFα in HIV and for IP-10 levels in HIV+HCV coinfection.

Effects of Alcohol Consumption on Oxidative Stress in a Sample of Patients Recruited in a Dietary Center in a Southern University Hospital: A Retrospective Study

<p><em>Background and objectives</em>: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effects of alcohol consumption on oxidative stress. <em>Materials and Methods</em>: The study was conducted by analyzing the increase in lipid peroxidation, the reduction of antioxidant defenses and the alteration of the oxidation/antioxidant balance after the administration of ethanol in 25% aqueous solution (<em>v</em>/<em>v</em>) at a concentration of 0.76 g/kg of body weight daily in two doses for 3 days. The changes in oxidative stress indices were investigated by standard methods previously described. <em>Results</em>: Ethanol administration has determined a significant increase in plasma levels of lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH), malonilaldehyde (MDA) and oxidized glutathione (GSSH), and a decrease in total antioxidant capacity (TAC), reduced glutathione (GSH) and GSH/GSSH ratio. <em>Conclusions</em>: In the proposed experimental condition, the excessive and repeated consumption of ethanol causes oxidative damage, as shown by the increase in lipid peroxidation, the reduction of antioxidant defenses and the alteration of the oxidation/antioxidant balance, which, at least in part, are responsible for the harmful effects of excess ethanol.</p>

<p>Results concerning the composition of fermentation substrates obtained from lignocellulosic biomass of various origins after microwave pre-treatment. HPLC analyzes of substrates before and during the alcoholic fermentation process. FTIR, XRD and NMR spectra and SEM images of biomass after pre-treatment under high pressure conditions. Isoprenoid alcohols can be esterified with fatty acids producing FAPE and FAGGE, respectively, presumably by one of the EgELT enzymes in Oil Palm. Geranylgeranyl-PP is the substrate for the synthesis of carotenoids and tocotrienol. Phytol can be phosphorylated two times by VTE5 and VTE6 yielding phytyl-diphosphate (phytol-PP), the precursor for tocopherol synthesis.
