Dataset of micro-phytoplankton biodiversity in the Eastern Channel area from 1987 to 2019.

Micro-phytoplankton communities are widely influenced by the environment and seasonal cycling. The French-English Channel is a system between the East Atlantic and the North Sea with contrasted coastal areas along the French coast. In a context of changing environment, it is crucial to understand the causes and consequences of environmental variability on marine compartments whose phytoplankton represent the first link.

Thanks to various monitoring programs such as REPHY (REPHY – French Observation And Monitoring Program For Phytoplankton And Hydrology In Coastal Waters, 2021) and RHLN (Regional Observation and Monitoring programs for Phytoplankton and Hydrology in the eastern English Channel), datasets of micro-phytoplankton diversity are available since the late 80s at a national scale.

Here, we present a subset of these datasets on micro-phytoplankton community. It gathers diversity and abundance from 1987 to 2019. Compared to the main dataset, a taxonomical review was done to ensure a correct spatial and temporal homogenization of the taxonomical denomination (description below). We also focus on 6 monitored stations along the French Channel coast; Antifer ponton pétrolier, Cabourg, Géfosse, Donville, At so and St Cast – Les Hébihens (gathering of two times series geographically close). A graphical visual of the sampling history (for the FLORTOT standard protocol) is available in the uploaded image below.

The dataset comes from a national-wide standard protocol of water sampling (Neaud-Masson, 2016). All records are stored in the Quadrige² platform, the reference information system for coastal waters in France. A compilation of the various results obtained at the French national scale was done on the last 30 years of monitoring (Belin and Soudant, 2018). The sampling is done at water surface (0-1 meter) around the high tide period (+/- 2 hours), it is fixed through lugol acid on arrivals at the lab and analysed through reversed microscopy by experts trained through a similar 2 years learning process. The taxa are identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible and names are updated according to the WORMs’ denomination base. Since 2015, evaluations (International Phytoplankton Intercomparison - IPI) are being implemented at the European scale, coordinated by the Marine Institute of Galway, to reduce identification deviations and biases between laboratories.

The columns are described as following:

#1 : Taxa_Name

Due to the extent of the initial dataset, both in space and time, a work of homogenization in the taxa’s denomination was applied. Therefore, associated with this dataset, we made available a table that summarizes changes applied in the nominations. It displays all the taxa initially present in the REPHY database (first column), the change in denomination applied if needed as they are not at the same resolution between stations’ laboratories, or because two species are now grouped into a common denomination. There is an “X” if the taxa is not relevant, rare, or not a phytoplankton or protist of interest and therefore it means the taxa was deleted and is not in the given dataset (second column) and potential comments or justifications (third column). It has been build and reviewed several times by the phytoplankton experts from the three Ifremer laboratories covering the stations (Dinard, Port en Bessin and Boulogne sur Mer).

#2 to 5 : Date, Day, Month, Year

Temporal description of the samples. The same level of detail was kept available in this version, with : Antifer ponton pétrolier (010-P-001), Cabourg (010-P-109), Géfosse (014-P-023), Donville (018-P-054), At so (006-P-001) and St Cast – Les Hébihens (022-P-002)

#11: Parameter

FLORTOT (standard samples, all micro-phytoplanktonic species are identified). LAGOS-NE v.1.054.1 Lake water clarity time series (1987-2011), climate, and geophysical data for 601 lakes across a 17-state region of the United States
Time series of median summer water clarity (secchi) values from 601 unique lakes in the Midwest and Northeast United States. Water clarity observations were derived from the Lake Multi-Scaled Geospatial and Temporal Database LAGOS-NELIMNO version 1.054.1. These data were used to assess long-term changes in water clarity from 1987-2011, and the potential drivers of those trends (Lottig et al. in press). Summer open water period was used to approximate the stratified period in the study lakes, which was defined as June 15 to September 15. Over the 25-year time period, each lake had to have at least a single summer water clarity observation for 22 of 25 years. The median number of secchi measurements that were used to derive a single annual median value for each lake was approximately 9. Of the over 14,000 annual estimates of water clarity that we generated, only two percent of those annual values were generated from a single observation and median number of observations for each lake over the 25-year study period was 223. Each unique lake with water clarity data also has supporting geophysical data, including climate, land use, hydrology, and topography derived at multiple spatial scales. Lake-specific characteristics, such as depth and area, are also reported. The geospatial data came from LAGOS-NEGEO version 1.03 except for the annual climate data which was aggregated at the HUC8 spatial scale from monthly PRISM data. For more specific information on how LAGOS-NE was created, see Soranno et al. 2015. Citations: Lottig, N.R., P-N. Tan, T. Wager, K.S. Cheruvelil, P.A. Soranno, E.H. Stanley, C.E Scott, C.A. Effects of microarthropod exclusion and water amendments on fluffgrass rhizosphere nitrogen mineralization potential at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 1987
This data package contains data on soil nitrogen mineralization potential in the rhizosphere of fluffgrass (Dasyochloa pulchella) plants from 1987. This study was conducted at the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center to test how watering, and changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes, impacts fluffgrass growth and nutrient cycling. Twenty 6 x 6 m plots were established with a 3 m buffer between plots. Five plots were randomly assigned to one of four treatments:1) Chlordane (to exclude microarthropods), 2) Chlordane and water, 3) Water, and 4) Control. Three randomly located subsamples were taken from each plot and consisted of the fluff grass plant, a 10 cm in diameter and 15 cm deep soil core centered on each plant. Samples were incubated for 0, 2, 4, or 8 weeks. This data set contains information on the incubation time, soil nitrate (NO3-), soil ammonium (NH4+), and soil water content for each subsample. This data were collected in May 1987 and the study is complete.
Nitrogen and phosphorus content of mesquite tree tissues from four habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1987
This data package contains data on measured concentrations of nutrients in mesquite tree tissues collected from four habitat types at the Jornada Basin LTER site. These habitat types include: (1)playa, (2)arroyo,(3)dunes, and (4)grassland and samples were collected in conjunction with phenology studies and natural abundance of N15 sampling during 1987. Leaves, stems, flowers, and pods were collected from mesquite sample tissues and individually digested and analyzed for total nitrogen (Kjeldahl) and total phosphorus. This data set consists of the date of collection, collection site, leaf total nitrogen, stem total nitrogen, flower total nitrogen, pod total nitrogen, leaf total phosphorus, stem total phosphorus, flower total phosphorus, and pod total phosphorus. Data from this study was collected in 1987. Prior data was collected in 1986, but had differing attributes and is therefore published in a separate data package (knb-lter-jrn.210386008).
Nitrate, ammonium, and water content of mesquite root tube soil from three habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1987
This data package contains data on measured root tube soil nutrients from soil cores collected under mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa)at three habitat types of the Jornada Experimental Range and New Mexico State University College Ranch. These habitat types include: 1)playa, 2)dunes, and (4)grassland. Soil core samples were collected in 1987 by hand-augering a reference core and a root tube core. Subsamples were analyzed for nitrate, ammonium, and soil moisture contents. This data set consists of the date of collection, collection site, nitrate concentration, ammonium concentration, and percent soil moisture. Collected variables also include treatments (irradiation and nematicide) that are not well-documented at this time. Data collection was completed in 1987.

Figure 5. Changes from 1987 in Environmental influences on movements and distribution of a wild horse (Equus caballus) population in western Nevada, USA: a 25-year study
Figure 5. Changes from 1987 to 2007 in patterns of the geographic distribution of wild horses in the Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Territory (MPWHT). The central, lightly shaded area is the key summer range (KSR). The black mark within it is the highest elevation in the Territory (elevation decreases 360 degrees around it throughout). Dark shaded areas indicate regular horse use and represent> 90% of the population. Many wild horse populations in the intermountain west accommodate to seasonal conditions, spending winter at lower elevations and summer at higher elevations. The pattern across years in the MPWHT changed from summer horse concentration in the KSR to decreasing return to KSR from winter range. In addition to establishment of decreased KSR use and increased year-round use of historical winter-range areas, expansion of the geographic use areas occurred in the latter, including seasonal use beyond MPWHT map boundaries.
