Inflation Reduction Act Energy Communities
<p>The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) became law on August 8, 2022. Under the law, new qualifying renewable and/or carbon-free electricity generation projects constructed in certain areas of the US, called energy communities, are eligible for bonus worth an additional 10% to the value of the production tax credit or a 10 percentage point increase in the value of the investment tax credit. The IRA does not explicitly map or list these specific communities. Instead, eligible communities are defined by a series of qualifications:</p> <ol> <li>a brownfield site,</li> <li>a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) or non-metropolitan statistical area with either (a) 0.17% or greater employment <em>or</em> (b) 25% or greater local tax revenues related to the extraction, processing, transport, or storage of coal, oil, or natural gas; <em>and</em> an unemployment rate at or above the national average for the previous year, or</li> <li>a census tract containing or adjacent to (a) a coal mine closed after December 31, 1999 or (b) a coal-fired electric generating unit retired after December 31, 2009.</li> </ol> <p>These maps and data layers contain GIS data for coal mines, coal-fired power plants, fossil energy related employment, and brownfield sites. Each record represents a point, tract or metropolitan statistical area and non-metropolitan statistical area with attributes including plant type, operating information, GEOID, etc. The input data used includes:</p> <ol> <li>Brownfields – Source: <a href="https://www.epa.gov/frs/geospatial-data-download-service">EPA</a>. No analysis was performed on this data layer. However, tract polygon layers have a column denoting brownfield presence (0 for no brownfield site, 1 if the tract contains a brownfield somewhere within the polygon).</li> <li>Eligible Employment MSAs (“Final_Employment_Qualifying_MSAs”) – Source: US Census <a href="https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/cbp.html">County Business Patterns</a>. Actes des évêques d'Évreux (e-Cartae)
<p>L’édition numérique des actes des évêques d’Évreux du XIe siècle à 1223 a été réalisée par Grégory Combalbert dans e-Cartae, outil d’édition critique en XML-TEI, de publication et de consultation en ligne des corpus de chartes médiévales. Ces actes constituent le corpus expérimental qui a permis la mise au point d’e-Cartae. Le corpus numérique proposé ici se distingue d’une base de données textuelles et constitue une véritable édition, aux deux sens que le terme peut avoir en français pour les spécialistes des sources anciennes : il a fait l’objet non seulement d’un traitement critique complet par l’éditeur scientifique, pour garantir la fiabilité et la normalisation des textes, mais aussi d’un protocole éditorial classique aux Presses Universitaires de Caen. Les Actes des évêques d’Évreux constituent le premier volume de la collection « e-Cartae ». Celle-ci est destinée à rassembler d’autres volumes d’actes épiscopaux (ensemble « Actépi ») ainsi que d’autres corpus d’actes diplomatiques.<br> Mme Chantal Senséby, maître de conférences à l’université d'Orléans, et Mme Véronique Gazeau, professeur émérite de l’université de Caen, ont été chargées de l’évaluation scientifique de cette publication, conformément aux statuts des Presses universitaires de Caen.</p>

Data from: Caught in the act: Incipient speciation at the southern limit of Viburnum in the Central Andes
<p>A fundamental objective of evolutionary biology is to understand the origin of independently evolving species. Phylogenetic studies of species radiations rarely are able to document ongoing speciation; instead, modes of speciation, entailing geographic separation and/or ecological differentiation, are posited retrospectively. The Oreinotinus clade of <em>Viburnum </em>has radiated recently from north to south through the cloud forests of Mexico and Central America to the Central Andes. Our analyses support a hypothesis of incipient speciation in Oreinotinus at the southern edge of its geographic range, from central Peru to northern Argentina. Although several species and infraspecific taxa of have been recognized in this area, multiple lines of evidence and analytical approaches (including analyses of phylogenetic relationships, genetic structure, leaf morphology, and climatic envelopes) favor the recognition of just a single species, V. seemenii. We show that what has previously been recognized as <em>V. seemenii </em>f. <em>minor </em>has recently occupied the drier Tucuman-Bolivian forest region from Samaipata in Bolivia to Salta in northern Argentina. Plants in these populations form a well-supported clade with a distinctive genetic signature and they have evolved smaller, narrower leaves. We interpret this as the beginning of a within-species divergence process that has elsewhere in the neotropics resulted repeatedly in Viburnum species with a particular set of leaf ecomorphs. Specifically, the southern populations are in the process of evolving the small, glabrous, and entire leaf ecomorph that has evolved in four other montane areas of endemism. As predicted based on our studies of leaf ecomorphs in Chiapas, Mexico, these southern populations experience generally drier conditions, with large diurnal temperature fluctuations. In a central portion of the range of <em>V. seemenii</em>, characterized by wetter climatic conditions, we also document what may be the initial differentiation of the leaf ecomorph with larger, pubescent, and toothy leaves. The emergence of these ecomorphs thus appears to be driven by adaptation to subtly different climatic conditions in separate geographic regions, as opposed to parapatric differentiation along elevational gradients as suggested by Viburnum species distributions in other parts of the neotropics.</p>
Mate preferences act independently on different elements of visual signals in Heliconius butterflies
<p>Mating cues are often comprised of several elements, which can act independently, or in concert to attract a suitable partner. Individual elements may also function in other contexts, such as predator defence or camouflage. In <em>Heliconius</em> butterflies, wing patterns comprise several individual colour pattern elements, which advertise the butterflies' toxicity to predators. These wing patterns are also mating cues and males predominantly court females that possess the same wing pattern as their own. However, it is not known whether male preference is based on the full wing pattern or only individual pattern elements. We compared preferences of male <em>H. erato lativitta</em> between female models with the full wing pattern and those with some pattern elements removed. We found no differences in preference between the full wing pattern model and a model with pattern elements removed, indicating that the complete composition of all elements is not essential to the mating signal. Wing pattern preferences also contribute to pre-mating isolation between two other Heliconius taxa, <em>H. erato cyrbia</em> and <em>H. himera</em>, therefore, we next compared preferences for the same models in these species. <em>H. erato cyrbia</em> and <em>H. himera</em> strongly differed in preferences for the models, potentially providing a mechanism for how pre-mating isolation acts between these species. These findings suggest that contrasting levels of selective constraint act on elements across the wing pattern.</p>

Identifiers and their references are automatically updated<br> when a Sensation is added or deleted.</p>

Monolayer doping of silicon-germanium alloys: A balancing act between phosphorus incorporation and strain relaxation
<p>This paper presents the application of monolayer doping (MLD) to silicon-germanium (SiGe). This study was carried out for phosphorus dopants on wafers of epitaxially grown thin films of strained SiGe on silicon with varying concentrations of Ge (18%, 30%, and 60%). The challenge presented here is achieving dopant incorporation while minimizing strain relaxation. The impact of high temperature annealing on the formation of defects due to strain relaxation of these layers was qualitatively monitored by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy prior to choosing an anneal temperature for the MLD drive-in. Though the bulk SiGe wafers provided are stated to have 18%, 30%, and 60% Ge in the epitaxial SiGe layers, it does not necessarily mean that the surface stoichiometry is the same, and this may impact the reaction conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and angle-resolved XPS were carried out to compare the bulk and surface stoichiometry of SiGe to allow tailoring of the reaction conditions for chemical functionalization. Finally, dopant profiling was carried out by secondary ion mass spectrometry to determine the impurity concentrations achieved by MLD. It is evident from the results that phosphorus incorporation decreases for increasing mole fraction of Ge, when the rapid thermal annealing temperature is a fixed amount below the melting temperature of each alloy.</p>

<p>Abstract:</p> <p>The Zeb2 transcription factor has been demonstrated to play important roles in hematopoiesis and leukemic transformation. Zeb1 is a close family member of Zeb2 but has remained more enigmatic concerning its roles in hematopoiesis. Here we show using conditional loss of function approaches and bone marrow reconstitution experiments that Zeb1 plays cell autonomous role in hematopoietic lineage differentiation, particularly as a positive regulator of monocyte development in addition to its previously reported important role in T-cell differentiation. Analysis of existing single cell RNAseq data of early hematopoiesis has revealed distinctive expression differences between Zeb1 and Zeb2 in HSPC differentiation with Zeb2 being more highly and broadly expressed that Zeb1 except at a key transition point (ST-HSCàMPP1) whereby Zeb1 appears to be the dominantly expressed family member. Inducible deletion of both Zeb1 and Zeb2 using a tamoxifen inducible Cre-mediated approach leads to acute bone marrow failure at this transition point with increased long-term and shortterm hematopoietic stem cell numbers and an accompanying decrease in all hematopoietic lineage differentiation. Bioinformatics analysis of RNAseq data has revealed that Zeb2 acts predominantly as a transcriptional repressor involved in restraining mature hematopoietic lineage gene expression programs from being expressed too early in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). Zeb1 appears to fine tune this repressive role during hematopoiesis to ensure hematopoietic lineage fidelity. Analysis of ROSA26 locus based transgenic models has revealed that Zeb1 as well as Zeb2 overexpression within the hematopoietic system can drive extramedullary hematopoiesis/splenomegaly and enhanced monocyte development. Finally, deletion of Zeb2 alone or Zeb1/2 together was found to enhance survival in secondary MLL-AF9 AML models attesting to the oncogenic role of Zeb1/2 in AML.</p> <p> </p> <p>Flow cytometric and Hematocrit analysis methods: </p> <p><br> Cells were stained with antibodies listed in the provided Supplemental Table (Antibodies.xlsx) according to the manufacturer guidelines. Flow cytometric analyses were performed on the LSRII and Fortessa X-20 cytometer (BD Biosciences) and the results were analysed by FACSDiva or FlowJo software (BD Biosciences). Cells for MLL-AF9 experiments and RNA-seq were stained and sorted on Influx or FACSAria Fusion sorters (BD Biosciences) at AMREP Flow Cytometry Core Facility and FlowCore, Monash University. <br> Submandibular blood samples were collected into EDTA-coated tubes, and hematology parameters were measured using a HemaVet 950FS automated blood analysis machine (Drew Scientific).</p>
