Amphora Handle
Everyday life in Pontes, Roman Staines; a stamped amphora handle. Amphora fragments are found at most locations in Staines. At the Friends Burial Ground alone 62kg of amphora sherds were recovered. From its shape, this one would probably have belonged to an amphora used to transport olive oil. David Barker, who worked on the 1969 excavations in Staines, has remarked that the washing of amphora sherds formed a distinct oil slick on the water! Wine Amphora with Stamp, Mleiha, Sharjah
Fragment of a wine amphora from Rhodes with a stamp that names the eponym Agemachos and the month Dalios. Agemachos can be quite accurately dated to ca. 181 – 179 BCE. An eponym was a yearly elected official, hence his name is preceded by the Greek preposition epi, meaning 'under the term of'. The second handle of the amphora would have had the stamp of the fabricant. The repair holes along some of the breaks show that this amphora was repaired in antiquity, before it was placed as a funerary gift in a tomb. The amphora fragment was discovered in 2014 by the Belgian archaeological expedition in the graveyard area AV-Z at Mleiha, Sharjah. 336 photos. Rare black-glazed Rhodian amphora, Sharjah
Rare black-glazed Rhodian wine amphora discovered in Tomb of Amud FA-5 at Mleiha, Sharjah, UAE. Rhodian amphorae were popular burial goods at Mleiha from the early 3rd to the 1st century BC. Dated to the mid 3rd century BCE. It was glazed on the in- and outside, in Southern Mesopotamia. Around the base are three oval spur marks visible in the glaze, caused by the support on which the vessel was placed in the oven at the time of the glazing. The spike was later removed, a practice documented from other Rhodian amphorae at Mleiha. Amphora with cylindrical body and elongated pointed bottom. Light brown clay. Assigned to form ""Lamboglia 2"" and used as container of wine.
