The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Sevilleta (SEV) contains plant cover of Dalea brachystachya (Fort Bowie prairie clover) measurements in percent units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.

Data from: Landscape composition has limited impact on local genetic structure in mountain clover, Trifolium montanum L.
Semi-dry grasslands in the European Alps have been increasingly fragmented over the last 150 years. Few studies have investigated the implications of landscape configuration for genetic structure and gene flow among remnant habitat patches. Conservation management of semi-dry grassland plants rarely accounts for possible effects of major landscape elements; such as forest patches, as barriers to gene flow and dispersal via seed and pollen, despite their potential importance for biodiversity conservation. Using 1,416 individuals from 61 sampling sites across two valleys in South-Eastern Switzerland and AFLP fingerprints we applied a spatial strip and a circle approach to determine the impact of different landscape elements on genetic differentiation in the semi-dry grassland herb Trifolium montanum (mountain clover). Overall genetic differentiation among sampling sites was low (overall FST = 0.044). Forest area had no effect on gene flow at the landscape scale but area of semi-dry grassland, the potential habitat of T. montanum, road area and altitude influenced genetic differentiation among sampling sites. The observed pattern of genetic differentiation suggests that a future increase in forest area, due to land use abandonment, at least in the short term, are unlikely to directly impact patterns of genetic variation in T. montanum.
Data from: Contrasting the effects of natural selection, genetic drift and gene flow on urban evolution in white clover (Trifolium repens)
Urbanization is a global phenomenon with profound effects on the ecology and evolution of organisms. We examined the relative roles of natural selection, genetic drift and gene flow in influencing the evolution of white clover (Trifolium repens), which thrives in urban and rural areas. Trifolium repens exhibits a Mendelian polymorphism for the production of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), a potent antiherbivore defence. We quantified the relative frequency of HCN in 490 populations sampled along urban-rural transects in 20 cities. We also characterized genetic variation within 120 populations in eight cities using 16 microsatellite loci. HCN frequency increased by 0.6% for every km from an urban centre, and the strength of this relationship did not significantly vary between cities. Populations did not exhibit changes in genetic diversity with increasing urbanization, indicating that genetic drift is unlikely to explain urban-rural clines in HCN frequency. Populations frequently exhibited isolation-by-distance and extensive gene flow along most urban-rural transects, with the exception of a single city that exhibited genetic differentiation between urban and rural populations. Our results show that urbanization repeatedly drives parallel evolution of an ecologically important trait across many cities that vary in size, and this evolution is best explained by urban-rural gradients in natural selection.

Pollination and plant reproductive success of two ploidy levels in red clover (Trifolium pratense L.)
<p>This dataset includes hand pollination, honey bee pollination and pollen germination experiments described in the article "Pollination and plant reproductive success of two ploidy levels in red clover (<em>Trifolium pratense</em> L.)", published in Frontiers in Plant Science (DOI: 10.3389/fpls.2021.720069). </p> <p>In a series of hand pollination experiments, the influence of visitation rate (10, 20, 40, 80 pollinated florets per flower head) on the seed number per pollinated floret and seed number per flower head were investigated, respectively. The influence of flowering stage (early, middle, and full flowering) on the seed number per pollinated floret was also investigated. Self-incompatibility was studied by comparing the seed number per flower head under self-pollination and interploidy pollination treatments. In order to study the autonomous pollination, we compared the seed number per flower head between self-pollination and control treatment.</p> <p>In the honey bee pollination experiments, we investigated the overall seed number per floret and compare the number of one-seeded and two-seeded florets in the studied red clover cultivars. Further, we investigated the pollen germination rate of each red clover cultivar. </p> <p>The main findings of this article include: </p> <p>(1) In hand pollination, increasing the visitation rates increased the seed number per flower head, but reduced the seed number per pollinated floret;</p> <p>(2) In hand pollination, different flowering stages did not influence the seed number per pollinated floret significantly;</p> <p>(3) In honey bee pollination, diploid red clover cultivars had more two-seeded florets compared to tetraploids.</p>
Premating isolation in neopolyploid red clover (Trifolium pratense)
<p><i>Premise</i>—Although polyploidy has been studied since the early 1900's, fundamental aspects of polyploid ecology and evolution remain unexplored. In particular, surprisingly little is known about how newly formed polyploids (neopolyploids) become demographically established. Models predict that most polyploids should go extinct within the first few generations due to reproductive disadvantages associated with being the minority in a primarily diploid population (i.e., the minority cytotype principle), yet polyploidy is extremely common. Therefore, a key goal in the study of polyploidy is to determine the mechanisms that promote polyploid establishment in nature. Because premating isolation will be critical for neopolylpoids to avoid minority cytotype exclusion and thus facilitate establishment, we examined floral morphology and three common premating barriers to determine their importance in generating reproductive isolation of neopolyploids from diploids.</p> <p><i>Methods</i>—We induced neopolyploidy in <i>Trifolium pratense</i> and compared their floral traits to the diploid progenitors. In addition to shifts in floral morphology, three premating barriers were examined: isolation by self-fertilization, flowering time asynchrony, and pollinator mediated isolation.</p> <p><i>Results</i>—We found significant differences in the morphology of diploid and neopolyploid flowers, but these changes did not facilitate premating barriers that would generate reproductive isolation of neopolyploids from diploids. There was no difference in flowering phenology, pollinator visitation, or selfing between the cytotypes.</p> <p><i>Conclusions</i>—Our results indicate that barriers other than the ones tested in this study, such as geographic isolation, vegetative reproduction, or pistil-stigma incompatibilities, might be more important in facilitating isolation and establishment of neopolyploid <i>Trifolium pratense.</i></p>
