Herding mechanisms to maintain the cohesion of a harem group: two interaction phases during herding
<p>In animal groups, individual interactions achieve coordinated movements to maintain cohesion. In horse harem groups, herding<br> is a behavior in which males chase females from behind; it is considered to assist with group cohesiveness. However,<br> the mechanisms by which the individuals move to maintain group cohesion are unknown. We applied novel non-invasive<br> methods of drone filming and video tracking to observe horse movements in the field with high temporal and spatial resolution.<br> We tracked all group members and drew trajectories. We analyzed the movements of females and found two phases<br> of interactions based on their timing of movement initiation. The females that moved first were those nearest to the herding<br> male, while the movement initiation of the later females was determined by the distance from the nearest moving female, not<br> by the distance from the herding male. These interactions are unique among animal group movements and might represent a<br> herding mechanism responsible for maintaining group cohesion. This might be due to long-term stable relationships within<br> a harem group and strong social bonds between females. This study showed that the combination of drone filming and video<br> tracking is a useful method for analyzing the movements of animals simultaneously in high resolution.</p>

Putting down roots: afforestation and bank cohesion of Icelandic rivers
<p>Riparian vegetation is widely recognized as a critical component of functioning fluvial systems. Human pressures on woody vegetation including riparian areas, especially at high latitude, have had lasting effects. In Iceland, prior to human settlement, native downy birch woodlands covered approximately 15–40% of the land area compared to 1–2% today. Afforestation efforts include planting seedlings, protecting native forest remnants, and acquiring land areas as national forests. The planted and protected nature of vegetation along rivers within some forests provides a unique opportunity to evaluate the various taxa within riparian zones and the channel stabilizing characteristics of the vegetation used in afforestation. We investigated bank properties, sediment textures, and root characteristics within riparian zones along four rivers in forests in Iceland. Bank sediment textures are dominantly sandy loam overlying coarser textures. Undercut banks are common because of erosion of the less cohesive subsurface layer. Quantitative root data indicate that the woody taxa have greater root densities, rooting depths, and more complex root structures than forbs or graminoids. The native downy birch has the highest root densities, with <1 mm roots most abundant. Modeling of added bank cohesion indicates that willow provides up to 6 times and birch up to 4 times more added cohesion to the coarse sediment textures comprising stream banks compared to no vegetation. We conclude that planting and protecting the native birch and willow helps to reduce bank erosion, especially where long-term grazing exclusion can be maintained.</p>
Governing Migration and Social Cohesion through Integration Requirements
<p>This socio-legal project questions how and with what effects the notion of “integration” has become, in migration law, administrative and court practice, a decisive criterion based on which states select which migrants shall be granted or denied access to specific rights (e.g., right of abode, political rights, right to family reunification). This affects the way social cohesion is strived for and reveals how both in law and practice social cohesion is conceived of and who is considered to belong or not. Based on the analysis of legal texts, ethnographic data and documents our research contributes to understanding how state officials deal with different categories of mobile or sedentary foreign nationals (in terms of gender, class, ethnicity, religion, age, etc.) when deciding about the allocation or denial of rights based on the criterion of “being integrated”. The underlying rationales of policies and practices are to be interpreted within broader processes of social transformation, e.g., the rise of the human rights regime, of neoliberalism, and of a “culture of control”. Switzerland is at the center of the study. The study implies an inter-cantonal and an international comparison with two contrasting European welfare states: Germany and Sweden.</p>
Fruits important for network cohesiveness may not be the same as for bird diets
<p>The present database contains 6 data frames used in "Fruits important for network cohesiveness may not be the same as for bird diets" simulations and analyses divided into two scripts.<br>The first script contains the HMSC-F fitting that generates almost all the inputs needed for the second script in which <br>is placed in the procedure for network simulations, rewiring, replaceability estimations, and data analysis described in the main text. </p> <p>To perform run correctly the methodology applied is important to use the scripts sequentially. </p> <p>The data frames are listed as follows:</p> <p>- phylbird_sorted.csv contains the phylogenetic correlation matrix of bird species.</p> <p>- phylplant_sorted.csv contains the phylogenetic correlation matrix of plant species.</p> <p>- interacciones.csv contains the interactions between plants and birds in six communities. "pajaro" column contains bird species; <br> "planta" column contains fruit species; "sitio" column contains community site information.</p> <p>- pabund_sorted1.txt list the fruit abundance in each community measured in grams/hectare. "species" column contains fruit species; <br> "abundancia" column is the abundance of each fruit in grams/hectare; "sitio" column means the site from which each community was sampled.</p> <p>- plant_traits.txt contains the fruit traits of the species under study. This data frame is to be used in the 1st part of the analysis (HMSC-F fitting). <br> It contains "t.carb" column that shows the amount of non-structural carbohydrates of each fruit in mg/g; "c.tann" is condensed tannins in ug/g;<br> "width" shows the equatorial width of fruits in mm. </p> <p>- ptraits_sorted1.txt depicts plant traits to be used in the estimation of diet descriptors (nutritional state and functional dispersion). This<br> data frame is to be used in part 2 of the analysis. "t.carb" column shows the amount of non-structural carbohydrates of each fruit in mg/g;<br> "lipid" column that shows the number of lipids of each fruit in mg/g; "protein" column that shows the number of proteins of each fruit in mg/g.</p> <p>- btraits_sorted.csv contain birds traits obtained from the Elton traits (Wilman et al. 2014). "pajaro" column shows bird species; "gape" depict gape size<br> in mm; "Diet.Inv" shows the proportion of invertebrates in bird diets; "Diet.Fruit" shows the proportion of fruits in birds' diets; "BodyMass.Value" contains the body mass of birds in g.</p>
