"STILL AROUND": Experiences and Survival Strategies of Veteran Women Software Developers (Supplementary Material)
<p>The intersection of ageism and sexism can create a hostile environment for veteran software developers belonging to marginalized genders. In this study, we conducted 14 interviews to examine the experiences of people at this intersection, primarily women, in order to discover the strategies they employed in order to successfully remain in the field. We identified 283 codes, which fell into three main categories: <em>Strategies</em>, <em>Experiences</em>, and <em>Perception</em>. Several strategies we identified, such as <em>(Deliberately) Not Trying to Look Younger</em>, were not previously described in the software engineering literature. We found that, in some companies, older women developers are recognized as having particular value, further strengthening the known benefits of diversity in the workforce. Based on the experiences and strategies, we suggest organizations employing software developers to consider the benefits of hiring veteran women software developers. For example, companies can draw upon the life experiences of older women developers in order to better understand the needs of customers from a similar demographic. While we recognize that many of the strategies employed by our study participants are a response to systemic issues, we still consider that, in the short-term, there is benefit in describing these strategies for developers who are experiencing such issues today.</p>

The impact of learning opportunities on the development of learning and decision making: an experiment with passerine birds
<p>Learning abilities have been shown to be influenced by the developmental context, namely through experiments that imposed severe nutritional and/or environmental constraints (i.e. lack of enrichment). In contrast, we know little on the impact of opportunities for learning on the development of cognition in animals, despite that such opportunities are known to influence human cognitive development. We exposed young zebra finches (<i>Taenopygia guttata</i>) (n=26) to one of three experimental conditions, i.e. an environment where (i) the presence of food was predicted by one colour cue (associative learning), (ii) a combination of two-colour cues (conditional learning), or (iii) colour cues were non-informative (control). After conducting two different discrimination tasks, our results show that experience with predictive cues can cause increased choice accuracy and decision-making speed. Our first learning task showed that<span> individuals in the associative treatment outperformed the control treatment, while task 2 showed that individuals in the conditional treatment shad shorter latencies when making choices compared to the control treatment.</span> We found no support for a speed-accuracy trade-off. This dataset provides a rare longitudinal and experimental examination of the effect of predictive vs non-predictive cues during development on the cognition of adult animals.</p>

Teaching Development of Distributed Software during COVID-19: An experience report in Brazil
<p>In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic affected all sectors of society worldwide, including education. Due to the social isolation requirement, several educational institutions used the Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) approach to keep their courses active, at least partially. This document provides an experience report about using ERT in two courses (Distributed Systems and Software Development for the Cloud) that deal with the Development of Distributed Software Systems. In these two courses, we used three main approaches: synchronous online classes, asynchronous learning videos, and online material available on a Git repository. In some classes, we also adopted active methodologies such as problem-based learning and flipped classroom. Students were evaluated by seminars, tests, and programming activities. In the end, we collected their feedback from an online survey. Forty-two (42) graduate and undergraduate students reported a good level of acceptance of our ERT model. Part of the students had difficulties in doing their programming homework, and the main obstacles reported by them were: (i) their psychological context and (ii) to reconcile the course activities with home tasks as well as the demands of their jobs. Once practical experiences in ERT will be essential for a while given the uncertainty about how long COVID-19 pandemic will remain active, we expect the highlights and drawbacks of our experience could help other professors in planning their courses.</p>
Data from: Transcriptomic signatures of social experience during early development in a highly social cichlid fish
<p><span>The social environment encountered early during development can temporarily or permanently influence life history decisions and behaviour of individuals and correspondingly shape molecular pathways. In the highly social cichlid fish <i>Neolamprologus pulcher,</i> deprivation of brood care permanently affects social behaviour, and alters the expression of stress axis genes in juveniles and adults. It is unclear when gene expression patterns change during early life depending on social experience, and which genes are involved. We compared brain gene expression of <i>N. pulcher </i>at two time points during the social experience phase when juveniles were reared either with or without brood care, and one time point shortly afterwards. We compared (i) whole transcriptomes and (ii) expression of 79 genes related to stress regulation, in order to define a neurogenomic state of stress for each fish. At developmental day 75, that is, after the social experience phase, 43 genes were down-regulated in fish having experienced social deprivation, while two genes involved in learning and memory and in post translational modifications of proteins (PTM), respectively, were up-regulated. Down-regulated genes were mainly associated with immunity, PTM and brain function. In contrast, during the experience phase no genes were differentially expressed when assessing the whole transcriptome. When focusing on the neurogenomic state associated with the stress response, we found that individuals from the two social treatments differed in how their brain gene expression profiles changed over developmental stages. Our results indicate that the early social environment influences the transcriptional activation in fish brains, both during and after an early social experience, possibly affecting plasticity, immune system function and stress axis regulation. </span></p>
Data from: Artificial light at night does not affect telomere shortening in a developing free-living songbird: a field experiment
Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an increasingly pervasive anthropogenic disturbance factor. ALAN can seriously disrupt physiological systems that follow circadian rhythms, and may be particularly influential early in life, when developmental trajectories are sensitive to stressful conditions. Using great tits (Parus major) as a model species, we experimentally examined how ALAN affects physiological stress in developing nestlings. We used a repeated-measure design to assess effects of ALAN on telomere shortening, body mass, tarsus length and body condition. Telomeres are repetitive nucleotide sequences that protect chromosomes from damage and malfunction. Early life telomere shortening can be accelerated by environmental stressors, and has been linked to later-life declines in survival and reproduction. We also assayed nitric oxide, as an additional metric of physiological stress, and determined fledging success. Change in body condition between day 8 and 15 differed according to treatment. Nestlings exposed to ALAN displayed a trend towards a decline in condition, whereas control nestlings displayed a trend towards increased condition. This pattern was driven by a greater increase in tarsus length relative to mass in nestlings exposed to ALAN. Nestlings in poorer condition and nestlings that were smaller than their nest mates had shorter telomeres. However, exposure to ALAN was unrelated to telomere shortening, and also had no effect on nitric oxide concentrations or fledging success. Thus, exposure to ALAN may not have led to sufficient stress to induce telomere shortening. Indeed, plasticity in other physiological systems could allow nestlings to maintain telomere length despite moderate stress. Alternatively, the cascade of physiological and behavioral responses associated with light exposure may have no net effect on telomere dynamics.

Exploring Developer Experience Factors in Software Ecosystems
<p><strong>Context: </strong>Developer experience (DX) plays a key role in developers' performance and their continued involvement in a software ecosystem (SECO) platform. While researchers and practitioners have recognized several factors affecting DX in SECO platforms, a clear roadmap of the most influential factors is still missing. This is particularly important given the direct impact on developers’ interest in SECO and their ongoing engagement with the common technological platform.<strong> </strong><strong>Goal:</strong> This work aims to identify key DX factors and understand how they influence software developers' decisions to adopt and keep contributing to a SECO. <strong>Methods: </strong>We conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS), analyzing 29 studies to assess the state-of-the-art of DX in SECO. Additionally, we conducted a Delphi study to evaluate the influence of 27 DX factors (identified in our SMS) from the perspective of 21 software developers to adopt and keep contributing to a SECO. <strong>Results:</strong> The factors that most strongly influence developers' adoption and ongoing contributions to a SECO are: "financial costs for using the platform", "desired technical resources for development", 'low barriers to entry into the applications market", and "more financial gains".<strong> Conclusion: </strong>DX is essential for the success and sustainability of SECO. Our set of DX factors provides valuable insights and recommendations for researchers and practitioners to address key DX concerns from the perspective of software developers.</p>
NETTUNO Experiment 1 – Wake Development in Floating Wind Turbines
<p>This dataset, collected as part of the NETTUNO research project, includes measurements from wind tunnel tests on a 1:75 scale model wind turbine. The primary focus of the experiment was to analyze how platform motion in different directions affects the aerodynamics of the wind turbine rotor and the development of its wake. The dataset consists of two components:<br>• Measurements of the aerodynamic forces and moments experienced by the rotor under various platform motion conditions.<br>• Wind speed measurements collected at multiple downstream distances from the rotor, capturing the velocity profiles and turbulence characteristics within the turbine's wake.<br>The dataset is designed to serve as a comprehensive benchmark for researchers and engineers working on floating wind turbine aerodynamics, offering valuable insights for optimizing wind farm layouts and for developing simulation tools.</p>
