Poses of People in Art: A Data Set for Human Pose Estimation in Digital Art History
<p>Throughout the history of art, the pose—as the holistic abstraction of the human body's expression—has proven to be a constant in numerous studies. However, due to the enormous amount of data that so far had to be processed by hand, its crucial role to the formulaic recapitulation of art-historical motifs since antiquity could only be highlighted selectively. This is true even for the now automated estimation of human poses, as domain-specific, sufficiently large data sets required for training computational models are either not publicly available or not indexed at a fine enough granularity. With the <em>Poses of People in Art</em> data set, we introduce the first openly licensed data set for estimating human poses in art and validating human pose estimators. It consists of 2,454 images from 22 art-historical depiction styles, including those that have increasingly turned away from lifelike representations of the body since the 19<sup>th</sup> century. A total of 10,749 human figures are precisely enclosed by rectangular bounding boxes, with a maximum of four per image labeled by up to 17 keypoints; among these are mainly joints such as elbows and knees. For machine learning purposes, the data set is divided into three subsets—training, validation, and testing—, that follow the established JSON-based Microsoft COCO format, respectively. Each image annotation, in addition to mandatory fields, provides metadata from the art-historical online encyclopedia WikiArt.</p>

<p>A qualitative dataset for the article: Teaching critical thinking about health information and choices in secondary schools: human-centred design of digital resources</p> <p>We collected this data in Phase 2 of the work described in the article, to inform development of educational resources (<em>Be Smart About Your Health</em>) to support teaching critical thinking about health claims and making informed health choices for use in secondary schools, based on a set of Informed Health Choices Key Concepts. </p> <p>Data collection methods: individual and group interviews, observation of classroom pilots, in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, and via email from an international advisory group. Timeframe for data collection and analysis: 2020-2022</p> <p>This dataset is a part of the research project: <em>Enabling sustainable public engagement in improving health and health equity, </em>2019-2024. Digital Humanities Retrieval Evaluation Dataset for Art, Architecture and Life Sciences (DHREAAL)
<p>This dataset, titled "Digital Humanities Retrieval Evaluation Dataset for Art, Architecture, and Life Sciences," emphasizes semantic retrieval, including ground truth data for both content-based and instance-based image retrieval. Utilized to compare various promising approaches and refine the evaluation method, this dataset serves as a precursor to a more extensive dataset. Additional details can be found in the dataset's related publication.</p> <p>Currently, the dataset is still under development. In its next iteration, the dataset will include options for retrieving image syntax and temporal aspects, in addition to the semantics.</p>
TexBiG Dataset for Analysing Complex Document Layouts in the Digital Humanities
<p>This is the dataset for the paper "A Dataset for Analysing Complex Document Layouts in the Digital Humanities and its Evaluation with Krippendorff ’s Alpha" in its second version, containing an update of the test images (without annotations) from the paper "Drawing the Same Bounding Box Twice? Coping Noisy Annotations in Object Detection with Repeated Labels". Organization of the dataset is also updated to make it easier to use.</p> <p>TexBiG (from the German Text-Bild-Gefüge, meaning Text-Image-Structure) is a document layout analysis dataset for historical documents in the late 19th and early 20th century. The dataset provides instance segmentation (bounding boxes and polygons/masks) annotations for 19 different classes with more then 52.000 instances. The added test images can be used to make submission on the leaderboard on <a href="https://eval.ai/web/challenges/challenge-page/2078/overview">EvalAI</a>. </p> <p>The <a href="https://zenodo.org/record/6885144/files/Annotations_Guideline.pdf?download=1">annotation guideline</a> can be found in the first of the dataset.</p>

<p>This webinar was funded by the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean, thanks to the “Simon Barton Postgraduate & ECR Conference Prize 2020” awarded to Nerea Fernández Cadenas (https://www.societymedievalmediterranean.com/simon-barton-postgraduate-conference-prize)<br> It has been designed to offer a forum in which scholars can debate and share their experiences about the difficulties and advantages of researching and teaching through Digital Humanities when exploring Medieval Mediterranean History.</p> <p><br> Moderated by Nerea Fernández Cadenas , speakers were:<br> <strong>Dr Jamie Wood:</strong> Associate Professor of History at the University of Lincoln. He teaches and researches the social and religious history of late antiquity and the early middle ages, especially of the Iberian Peninsula. He has been using digital tools to teach History for well over a decade. He is especially interested in digital pedagogies that encourage students to engage actively in their learning and, ultimately, to create and share the results of the independent work with others, both within and beyond the academy.</p> <p><br> <strong>Dr Charles Wes</strong>t: Reader in Medieval History at the University of Sheffield, UK. His research focuses on earlier medieval European history, and he's currently writing a book on the eleventh century for Oxford University Press. You can read about some of his teaching and research on his blog, Turbulent Priests (http://turbulentpriests.group.shef.ac.uk/). He's been teaching with Wikipedia since 2018.</p> <p><br> <strong>Dr Lynn Ramey</strong>: Professor of French at Vanderbilt University and Faculty Director of the Digital Humanities Center. As former computer programmer, she is working to create a video game engine that will allow users to play as medieval travellers. She is also running the digital project Cyprus: Crossroads of the Medieval Mediterranean that explores this multicultural world. She published several monograph: Christian, Saracen and Genre in Medieval French Literature Studies in Medieval History and Culture, with Routledge in 2001; and Black Legacies: Race and the European Middle Ages, with University Press of Florida in 2014</p> <p><br> <strong>Dr Robert Houghton</strong>: Senior Lecturer in Early Medieval History at the University of Winchester. His research focuses on the political and social networks of the kingdom of Italy c.888-c.1122 with recent publications in the Journal of Medieval History and Storicamente. His work also considers the representation of the Middle Ages in Modern Games and the ways in which these games can be used for teaching and research.</p> <p><br> <strong>Dr Ainoa Castro Correa:</strong> Lecturer in Manuscript Studies and History of the Church at the University of Salamanca, after having been Marie Curie Research Fellow at King’s College London, Virginia Brown Fellow in Latin Palaeography at the Ohio State University, and Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Notre Dame and at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (Toronto). VerbaAlpina - oder: der Transfer der Geolinguistik in die digital humanities
<p>Seit der zügigen Durchsetzung interaktiver und kollaborativer Strukturen im Internet durchlaufen zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Disziplinen einen Prozess tiefgreifenden Wandels, denn im Gefolge der medialen Revolution haben sich die Rahmenbedingungen der Wissenschaftskommunikation substantiell verändert. In den Disziplinen, die sich mit kulturellen Techniken und ihrer geschichtlichen Entwicklung befassen, kann dieser Wandel mit dem Schlagwort der digital humanities identifiziert werden. Die seit je in der sprachlichen Empirie verankerte Geolinguistik ist in geradezu idealer Weise geeignet, um die Notwendigkeit des skizzierten Transfers zu illustrieren. Ausgehend von der detaillierten Vorstellung einer webbasierten Forschungsumgebung (<a href="https://www.verba-alpina.gwi.uni-muenchen.de/">https://www.verba-alpina.gwi.uni-muenchen.de/</a>) zeigt der Vortrag, wie sich die Methodologie der sprachwissenschaftlichen Arbeit ändert, wenn man sich der digitalen Herausforderung stellt. Data from: Human face-off: a new method for mapping evolutionary rates on three-dimensional digital models
<p>Modern phylogenetic comparative methods allow estimating evolutionary rates of phenotypic change, how these rates differ across clades, and assessing whether the rate remained constant over time. Unfortunately, currently available phylogenetic comparative tools express the rate in terms of a scalar dimension, hence they do not allow us to determine rate variations among different parts of a single, complex phenotype, or charting of realized rate variation directly onto the phenotype. Herein, we present a new method which allows the mapping of evolutionary rate variation directly on three-dimensional phenotypes, informing on the direction and magnitude of trait change automatically.</p> <p>This new method, implemented by the function rate.map embedded in the R package 'RRphylo', is based on phylogenetic ridge regression rate estimates. Since the latter represent ridge regression slopes, they possess sign and magnitude. In 'RRphylo', different rates are calculated for different districts of the phenotype, which can then be visualized directly onto the phenotype itself. We present the application of rate.map to the evolution of facial skeleton in Hominoidea (the clade including living and fossil apes), the primate clade inclusive of Homo and the greater apes. We found that the highly derived, unique shape of the face in modern humans evolved through rapid phenotypic changes affecting the nasal bones, the brow ridge and the maxillary region. The canine fossa, a facial feature unique to Homo sapiens, did not belong to a region of rapid phenotypic change, and could be seen as the by-product of midface evolution as suggested by previous studies.</p>
