<p>The article presents the research performance of newly established technical institutes in India. It gives an overview of NTU and NIRF ranking methodologies. This research would help institutions to check their performance and identify ways to strengthen their rank by producing more output with high-impact research work. The article provides appropriate input to the technical institutions under the study to set out practical and pedagogical approaches, and cross-institutional as well as international collaboration to achieve their research goals. The article gives rank to the technical institutes under the study based on their research performance using the NTU ranking methodology.</p>

Data from: Specimen-based analysis of morphology and the environment in ecologically dominant grasses: the power of the herbarium

Herbaria contain a cumulative sample of the world's flora, assembled by thousands of people over several hundred years. Recent advances in computation, DNA sequencing, and image manipulation have allowed us to capitalize on this resource. Using herbarium material, we conducted a species-level analysis of a major clade in the grass tribe Andropogoneae, which includes the dominant species of the world's grasslands, from the genera Andropogon, Schizachyrium, Hyparrhenia, and other groups. We imaged 188 of the 250 available species of the clade, georeferenced the specimens, and extracted climatic variables for each. Using semiand fully automated image analysis techniques, we extracted spikelet morphological characters and correlated these with environmental variables. We are currently generating chloroplast genome sequences to correct for phylogenetic covariance and here present an analysis of a subset of 81 species, representing the power of this approach. In addition to taxonomic/phylogenetic observations, we find all morphological and ecological characters are homoplasious but variable among clades. For example, sessile spikelet length is positively correlated with awn length when all accessions are considered, but when separated by clade, the relationship is positive for five sub-clades and negative for three others. Macrohair density and pedicel length were negatively correlated with precipitation.

Population Genomics Analysis of 30 Samples from Each of Multiple Populations Reveals Signatures of Selection from Breeding for Rapid Growth and Apical Dominance in Paulownia fortunei

<p><i>Paulownia fortunei</i> is an ecologically and economically valuable tree cultivated for its rapid growth and high-quality timber. To enhance <i>Paulownia</i> germplasm, we have developed the elite variety QingT with patented advantages in growth rate and apical dominance. To illuminate the genetic basis of QingT's superior traits, here we harness comparative population genomics to analyze genomic variation patterns between QingT and common <i>Paulownia</i>. We performed whole-genome re-sequencing of 30 QingT and 30 common samples, detecting 15.6 million SNPs and 2.6 million indels. Phylogeny and population structure analyses robustly partitioned common and QingT into distinct groups which indicate robust genome stabilization. QingT exhibited reduced heterozygosity and linkage disequilibrium decay compared to common <i>Paulownia</i>, reflecting high recombination, indicating hybridizing effects with common white-flowered string is the source of its patented advantages. Genome selection scans uncovered 25 regions of 169 genes with elevated nucleotide diversity, indicating selection sweeps among groups. Functional analysis of sweep genes revealed upregulation of ribosomal, biosynthesis and growth pathways in QingT, implicating enhanced protein production and developmental processes in its rapid growth phenotype. This study's insights comprehensively chart genomic variation during <i>Paulownia</i> breeding, localizing candidate loci governing agronomic traits, and underpinnings of future molecular breeding efforts to boost productivity.&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Genetic analysis of red deer (Cervus elaphus) administrative management units in a human-dominated landscape - patterns of genetic diversity, population structure and gene flow

<p><span><span>Red deer (</span><span><em>Cervus elaphus</em></span><span>) throughout central Europe are</span> impacted by different anthropogenic activities including habitat fragmentation, selective hunting, and translocations<span>. This has substantial influences on genetic diversity and the long-term conservation of local populations of this species. Here we use genetic samples from 480 red deer individuals to assess the genetic diversity and differentiation of the 12 administrative management units located in Schleswig Holstein, the northernmost federal state in Germany. </span></span><span><span>We applied multiple analytical approaches and show that the history of local populations (i.e., translocations, culling of individuals outside of designated red deer zones, and anthropogenic infrastructures) has led to comparably low levels of genetic diversity. The mean expected heterozygosity was below 0.6 and we observed on average 4.2 alleles across 12 microsatellite loci. Effective population sizes below the recommended level of 50 were estimated for multiple local populations. </span></span><span><span>Our estimates of genetic structure and gene flow show that red deer in northern Germany are best described as a complex network of asymmetrically connected subpopulations, with high genetic exchange among some local populations and reduced connectivity of others. Genetic diversity was also correlated with population densities of neighboring management units. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>Based on these findings, we suggest that connectivity among existing management units needs to be considered in the practical management of the species, which means that some administrative management units should be managed together, while the effective isolation of other units needs to be mitigated.</span></span></p>

Data from: Tamm Review: a meta-analysis of thinning, prescribed fire, and wildfire effects on subsequent wildfire severity in conifer dominated forests of the Western US

<p>Increased understanding of how active forest management (i.e., mechanical thinning, prescribed burning, and managed wildfire) affects subsequent wildfire severity is urgently needed as people and forests face a growing wildfire crisis. In response, we reviewed scientific literature for the US West and completed a meta-analysis that answered three questions: (1) How much do treatments reduce wildfire severity within treated areas? (2) How do the effects vary with treatment type, treatment age, and forest type? (3) How does fire weather moderate the effects of treatments? We found overwhelming evidence that mechanical thinning with prescribed burning, mechanical thinning with pile burning, and prescribed burning only are effective at reducing subsequent wildfire severity, resulting in reductions in severity from 62% to 72% relative to untreated areas. In comparison, thinning only was less effective – underscoring the importance of treating surface fuels when mitigating wildfire severity is the management goal. The efficacy of these treatments did not vary among forest types assessed in this study and was high across a range of fire weather conditions. Prior wildfire had more complex impacts on subsequent wildfire severity, which varied with forest type and initial wildfire severity.  Across treatment types, we found that effectiveness of treatments declined over time, with the mean reduction in wildfire severity decreasing nearly threefold when wildfire occurred greater than 10 years after initial treatment. Our meta-analysis provides up-to-date information on the extent to which active forest management reduces wildfire severity and facilitates better outcomes for people and forests during future wildfire events. </p>

<p>Aim: Fine roots play an important role in biogeochemical cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. However, our understanding of large scale biogeographic patterns and drivers of fine-root C:N:P stoichiometry is extremely limited.</p> <p>Location: China.</p> <p>Methods: We compiled data for fine-root carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations at 165 sites across China to explore large-scale biogeographic patterns and drivers of fine-root C:N:P stoichiometry.</p> <p>Results: The geometric means of fine-root C, N, and P concentrations were 448.81 mg g-1, 10.73 mg g-1, and 0.9 mg g-1, respectively, whereas C:N, C:P and N:P ratios were 41.84, 508.32 and 11.73, respectively. The fine-root elemental concentrations and their ratios varied widely among plant groups and biomes, and showed clear latitudinal and longitudinal trends, as a consequence of differences in climate, soil and plant-type. However, plant-type was the largest contributor to the total variance in fine-root C, N, and P and their ratios compared to climate factors or soil features.</p> <p>Main conclusions: The data reveal the existence of broad biogeographic patterns of fine-root C:N:P stoichiometry in China. These results advance our knowledge about the biogeochemical cycling of fine roots.</p>

Interspecific differences in traits can alter the relative niche use of species within the same environment. Bats provide an excellent model to study niche use because they have a wide variety of behavioural, acoustic and morphological traits that may lead to multi-species, functional groups. Predatory bats have been classified by their foraging location (edge, clutter, open space), ability to aerial hawk and/or substrate glean prey and echolocation call design and flexibility, all of which may dictate their diet. For example, high frequency, broadband calls do not travel far but offer high object resolution while high intensity, low frequency calls travel further but provide lower resolution. Because these behaviours can be flexible four behavioural categories have been proposed: (1) gleaning, (2) behaviourally flexible (gleaning and hawking), (3) clutter tolerant hawking, and (4) open space hawking. Recent studies of diet in bats use molecular tools to identify prey but mainly focus on one or two species in isolation and few studies provide evidence for substantial differences in prey use despite the many behavioural, acoustic and morphological differences. Here we analyse the diet of 17 sympatric species in the Chihuahuan desert and test the hypothesis that peak echolocation frequency and behavioural categories are linked to differences in diet. We find no significant correlation between dietary richness and echolocation frequency (though it spanned close to 100kHz across species). However, our data suggest that behaviourally flexible bats that use gleaning and aerial hawking have the broadest diets and are the most differentiated from clutter-tolerant aerial hawking species.

Data from: Quantitative analysis of the ecological dominance of benthic disaster taxa in the aftermath of the end-Permian mass extinction

The end-Permian mass extinction, the largest extinction of the Phanerozoic, led to a severe reduction in both taxonomic richness and ecological complexity of marine communities in its aftermath, eventually culminating in a dramatic ecological restructuring of communities. During the Early Triassic recovery interval, disaster taxa proliferated and numerically dominated many marine benthic invertebrate assemblages. These disaster taxa include the bivalve genera Claraia, Unionites, Eumorphotis and Promyalina, and the inarticulate brachiopod Lingularia. The exact nature and extent of their dominance remains uncertain. Here, a quantitative analysis of the dominance of these taxa within the fossil communities of Panthalassa and Tethys benthic realms is undertaken for the stages of the Early Triassic to examine temporal and regional changes in disaster taxon dominance as recovery progresses. Community dominance and disaster taxon abundance is markedly different between Panthalassic and Tethyan communities. In Panthalassa, community evenness is low in the Induan stage, but increases significantly in the Smithian and Spathian. This is coincident with a significant decrease in the relative abundance and occurrence frequency of the disaster taxa, most notably of low-oxygen affinity taxa Claraia and Lingularia. While the disaster taxa are present in post-Induan assemblages, other taxa, including two articulate brachiopod genera, outrank the disaster taxa in relative abundance. In the Tethys, assemblages are generally more even than contemporaneous Panthalassic assemblages. We observe an averaged trend towards more even communities with fewer disaster taxa in both Panthalassic and Tethyan assemblages over time.

Global Food Security Support Analysis Data (GFSAD) Crop Dominance 2010 Global 1 km V001

The NASA Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments ([MEaSUREs](https://earthdata.nasa.gov/about/competitive-programs/measures)) Global Food Security Support Analysis Data (GFSAD) Crop Dominance Global 1 kilometer (km) dataset was created using multiple input data including: Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), Satellite Probatoire d'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) vegetation, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) remote sensing data; crop type data, secondary elevation data; 50-year precipitation and 20-year temperature data; reference sub-meter to 5 meter resolution ground data; and country statistic data.The GFSAD1KCD data were produced for nominal 2010 by overlaying the five dominant crops of the world produced by Ramankutty et al. (2008), Monfreda et al. (2008), and Portman et al. (2009) over the remote sensing derived global irrigated and rainfed cropland area map of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI; Thenkabail et al., 2009a, 2009b, 2011, Biradar et al., 2009) to ultimately create eight classes of crop dominance.
