The Preface begins: احلى منطقا افصح به لسان الفصحاء‘ واولى مدركا ارتسم فى اذهان الاذكياء‘ حمد اله الخ The author states in it that he wrote these notes by the advice of his father, and he dedicates his work to <a href="https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n50002533.html">Shâhjahân</a>. The note is: قوله هكذا وجدنا الخ كذا مركب من كاف التشبيه الخ. Well written, but left unfinished. The last note begins: قوله و الامر في ذلك سهل Cat. 236, ii.

The single glosses are not introduced by قوله , as usual , but the text to which they refer is marked with red lines. Neatly written, by Taḳî al-dîn الحصنى , who died A.H. 881 , according to a note on the title-page, which was written by the subsequent owner of this copy. Marginal notes. The last two foll. are filled with various notes and tracts, viz.--- a. An arithmetical rule, which begins:  بسط التركات التي فيها الكسر b. A short tract by JURJÂNÎ on the definition of غاية , فائدة, and other words. It is inscribed: الفوائد الشريفة للحضرة الشريفية قدّس سرّه c. (fol.173) A list of the ‘’seventy and odd’’ articles of the Creed, beginning : ذكر الشعب البضع و السبعين الايمان It is followed by صلوة الاستخارة d. Another tract on the Creed. At the end the signature of ‘Alî b. Maḥmûd Gîlânî. Bîj. Libr., A. H. 1025. Seal of Ibrâhîm Nauras (‘Âdil Shâh II.). Parallel and shared glosses to the first book of the Etymologiae [edge and node tables]

This record contains the node table and the edge table for plotting and analyzing the co-occurrence network of glossed manuscripts transmitting the first book of the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville. This data is used in: Evina Stein. ‘Parallel Glosses, Shared Glosses, and Gloss Clustering: Can Network-Based Approach Help Us to Understand Organic Corpora of Glosses?’, Journal of Historical Network Research 9 (2023), 36-116. Abstract: Glossing was an important element of medieval western manuscript culture. However, glosses are notoriously difficult to analyze because of their triviality, fluid nature, heterogeneity of origin, complex transmission histories, and anonymity. Traditional scholarly approaches such as close reading and the genealogical method often do not produce satisfactory results, especially in the case of gloss corpora that are highly organic, i.e., display the traits listed above to a significant degree. This article outlines a method for analyzing the organic corpora of glosses based on their treatment as networks. The theoretical model for the proposed method is the co-occurrence network, a network model in which relationships between entities (nodes) are established based on certain shared properties or constituent elements (edges). In the case of corpora of glosses, glossed manuscripts are assumed as nodes, and the glosses that specific manuscripts have in common constitute the edges between them. Since gloss parallelism can arise through different processes, including randomness, the article describes two strategies that reduce such noise so that the transmission of glosses can be effectively examined. The method is demonstrated on a representative corpus – the early medieval glosses to the first book of the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville.

Selection of Han dynasty paronomastic glosses

This is a digitized collection of the paronomastic glosses found in the appendix of W. South Coblin, A handbook of Eastern Han sound glosses, Hong Kong: Chinese univ. Press, 1983. Whereas Coblin used the Old and Middle Chinese reconstructions of Li Fang-Kuei, this dataset uses the Late Han reconstructions of Axel Schuessler (Minimal Old Chinese and Later Han Chinese: A Companion to Grammata Serica Recensa, Honolulu: University of Hawai‘i Press, 2009). The data set is incomplete, ending mid way through Xu Shen, and many characters were not found in Schuessler 2009.
