Social justice implications of smart urban technologies: an intersectional approach

Abstract

Techno-optimistic visions around smart buildings, homes, cities, grids, healthcare etc. have become ubiquitous over the past decade. Utilizing variations of machine learning and artificial intelligence, smart urbanism (SU) envisions an efficient, digital society. However, research shows that smart technologies reinscribe inequalities by prioritizing the interests of the free market, technology-centric governance, and data monetization. Although there has been a growing concern over the injustices SU perpetuates, there is a lack of systematic engagement with power systems such as capitalism or heterosexism that underpin SU visions. In this paper, we develop a novel framework which situates intersectional justice at the heart of SU. A mapping of 70 cases of ‘trouble’ with the promises of SU is carried out to address three core research questions: (i) What are the ‘troubles’ with SU? (ii) To what extent are they intersectional? and (iii) What can intersectionality add to the development of a just SU? Our analysis shows how SU politics play out in relation to how users are understood and engaged, how different actors institutionalise SU, and how dominant power systems are challenged. We find that intersectional justice concerns are addressed only marginally - 1 of the 70 cases explicitly mentioned the term intersectionality, 16 did not engage with any intersectional approach, and 31 cases did not address social justice concerns directly.

Practice Relevance: (i) citizen-led initiatives against SU should commit to intersectionality’s radical core to dismantle power structures to ensure local smart urban projects do not entrench global business-as-usual neoliberal agendas. Intersectional thinking can create spaces for deliberative dialogues between civil society groups and build alliances across groups that seek to challenge the hegemony of exclusionary urban policies, (ii) urban planners and local governments which are at the forefront of SU applications should decenter technologies and rather focus efforts on working out how smart technologies can work in conjunction with other kinds of urban interventions, such as social, economic and environmental policy changes, collaborative planning, community development, etc to herald more just urban futures and (iii) designers of smart urban technologies should apply intersectional approaches to further challenge homoeconomicus (rational, white, technophilic, able-bodied) as the primary user-type and to replace it with diverse user archetypes that express humanity, justice, and generosity.

CN+: Vehicular Dataset at Traffic Light Regulated Intersection in Bremen, Germany

Vehicular ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) were created to reduce traffic accidents and enhance the safety of both passengers and other road users. In VANETs, vehicles communicate with nearby vehicles using V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) communication links to improve awareness of their surroundings. Since their inception, considerable research has focused on developing cutting-edge algorithms to boost safety. However, testing these algorithms in real-world conditions is difficult due to high costs and various logistical challenges. Therefore, simulation-based testing is frequently used for VANET applications. Utilizing real datasets in simulations can significantly improve accuracy and yield realistic results. In this study, we introduce a dataset called 'CN+', which comprises data from over 25,000 vehicles collected over 32 hours at a signalized intersection in Bremen, Germany. The dataset is presented in two different formats: 1-CSV format and 2-SUMO converted format.

The Intersection of Tibetan Buddhism & Western Psychology: A Cultural Immersion Study

Data Set used for qualitative research project re: Intersection of Buddhism and Western Psychology.

Abstract: Western psychology has a long history of incorporating Buddhist practices and traditions into aspects of treatment, perhaps most predominantly the practice and theory of mindfulness (Bankart, 2003; Chan-Wiles, 2013; Dryden & Still, 2006; Kress, 1993; Rhys-Davids, 1924). This qualitative study critically examines the integration of Buddhism and psychology through the lived experiences of four clinical psychology doctoral students. These students attended a 9-day meditation retreat and seminar in France which involved the study of Tibetan Buddhism and how it integrates with Western psychology. The lived experience was captured through in vivo journaling, retrospective journaling, and interviews between the students. This material was then analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) procedure outlined by Hill (2012), which incorporates phenomenological grounded theory and comprehensive process analysis (Hill et al., 2005). Four themes were identified: acceptance as an aspect of creating change, greater awareness for the concepts of Buddhism, Bodhicitta and the value of suffering, and integrating the experience and carrying it forward. The content of these themes is explored, along with implications for increased cultural sensitivity and clinical effectiveness in the implementation of mindfulness practices and other Tibetan Buddhist concepts in the practice of Western psychology.

Exploring opportunities and challenges for intangible cultural heritage at the intersection of institutions, civil society, and migrant communities

This data set was produced in the CultureLabs project to explore the needs and expectations of migrant and refugee communities in several European countries in relation to communicating and sharing their intangible cultural heritage (ICH) practices as well as of cultural and civil society organisations that plan to support this.

The data was gathered across Europe in early 2019 and consists of 101 surveys administered and 27 interviews. 101 surveys were administered to people belonging to migrant and refugee communities in several hosting countries, mostly Italy and Germany, while the countries of origin of respondents covered four continents. The survey consisted of closed-ended questions and was structured into eight thematic areas related to a balanced mix of independent and dependent variables for the generation of correlations and clusters. The thematic areas included: background information; employment status; socioeconomic status; residency or migration status; individual preferences, attitudes, and activities; intercultural awareness; extent of interest and preparedness to become actively involved in cultural activities; and access to and use of digital tools. 27 semi-structured interviews were also conducted. The interviewees were recruited from the collaborative network of the nine partner institutions in the CultureLabs project. Although each interview gave space to the issues raised by the interviewees, four themes were deepened with the majority of participants: interest in cultural activities, expectations from cultural activities, the importance of digital tools for cultural activities, and the relevance of cultural heritage activities for individuals and their socio-cultural integration in the host society.

The findings resulted in a peer-reviewed publication available at the following link: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13527258.2021.1922934

The original dataset has been processed by removing details and parts that might compromise the anonymity of the participant.

This work is supported by the European Union’s Horizon2020 project CultureLabs: Recipes for Social Innovation, under Grant Agreement 770158. Intersection Monitoring: A dataset for vehicle detection using an infrastructure camera including ground truth vehicle localization

Intersection Monitoring: A dataset for vehicle detection using an infrastructure camera including ground truth vehicle localization.

This dataset contains images from a infrastructure camera monitoring an intersection and the ground-truth information for a vehicle crossing it from different directions. The data is aimed to develop and improve image-based vehicle detection algorithms.

The dataset includes two different recordings with the same structure. For each of them, the sequence of images is provided in PNG format, along with the ground truth of the vehicle. The ground truth data was captured using a high-precision GNSS receiver installed on the test vehicle, fused with in-vehicle sensors using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) .

Time considerations

The camera and GNSS receiver clocks were synchronized before each test to have the same time base.

Each test last about 140 seconds.

Image files

Image files can be found on the img/ folder within for each test. The camera was configured to record images at 25 fps:

Test 1: 3704 files

Test 2: 3426 files

Vehicle localization ground truth

The test vehicle is a prototype of Autonomous Vehicle developed by the AUTOPIA research group at the Centre for Automation and Robotics in Spain.

Vehicle location mainly depends on a Trimble BX982 GNSS receiver using RTK inputs from a local station. However, the location algorithm applies an EKF for combining GNSS measurements with different onboard sensors providing yaw rate, longitudinal acceleration and speed, steering wheel position and speed, etc.

For each test, the vehicle.csv file contains the vehicle information recorded at 20Hz. This file includes:

UTM Time: Time using the format HHMMSSss:

HH: Hours

MM: Minutes

SS: Seconds

ss: Fraction of seconds

UTM East: East coordinate of the GNSS antenna in the UTM frame, in meters.

UTMNorth: North coordinate of the GNSS antenna in the UTM frame, in meters.

Orientation: Yaw angle of the vehicle, measured from the East axis (x-axis).

Speed: Vehicle speed in m/s

Acceleration: Vehicle acceleration in m/s^2

Camera info

The file camera_parameters.json includes all the information about the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters for the camera. The configuration stored on this file appplies to all tests.

The camera used is an AXIS M1125 with variable focal length. It was installed in a communication tower near the intersection.

Vehicle info

The file vehicle_parameters.json includes information about vehicle dimensions and antenna location. The GNSS antenna is installed near the rear axle of the vehicle, in the middle part of the vehicle. The configuration stored on this file appplies to all tests.

Tools

Some MATLAB tools can be found in https://github.com/autopia-car/datasets-tools-intersection-monitoring

Disclaimer

That the dataset comes "AS IS", without express or implied warranty and/or any liability exceeding mandatory statutory obligations. Normal and abnormal eddy dataset based on the intersection of altimeters and Argos

The current mainstream identification method of eddy based on the altimeter is not completely certain in determining the polarity of eddies, so we use the Argo arrays covering the global ocean to screen out abnormal eddies with subsurface potential density anomaly features opposite to surface height anomaly features, including abnormal anticyclonic eddies and abnormal cyclonic eddies. Meanwhile, for further comparing the differences between the natures of normal and abnormal eddies, we also screen out the normal eddies whose subsurface potential density anomaly features are same as surface height anomaly features, including normal anticyclonic eddies and normal cyclonic eddies. The dataset stores the location coordinate, radius, amplitude and lifetime of the eddy, as well as the float number, profile number, location coordinate, date of record of the profile in this eddy and the potential density anomaly in the depth range of 0-1000 m.
