The most remarkable migrants: Systematic analysis of the Western European insect flyway at a Pyrenean mountain pass
<p>In 1950, David and Elizabeth Lack chanced upon a huge migration of insects and birds flying through the Pyrenean Pass of Bujaruelo, later describing the spectacle as combining both grandeur with novelty. The intervening years have seen many changes to land use and climate, posing the question as to the current status of this migratory phenomenon, while a lack of quantitative data has prevented insights into the ecological impact of this mass insect migration and into the factors affecting it. To address this, we revisited the site in autumn over a 4-year period and systematically monitored diurnal insect species and numbers. We document an annual mean of 17.1 million day-flying insects from 5 orders moving south, with 'mass migration' events associated with warmer temperatures, the presence of a headwind, sunlight, low windspeed, and low rainfall. Diptera dominated the migratory assemblage and annual numbers varied by more than fourfold with larger annual migration flows associated with higher autumn temperatures in Northwest Europe. Finally, using observed environmental thresholds for migration, we estimate an annual 'bioflow' of at least 14.6 billion day-flying insects migrating south over the whole Pyrenean Mountain range, highlighting the importance of this route for seasonal insect migrants.</p>
Facilitated migration could bolster migrant passage through anthropogenically altered ecosystems
<p>Anthropogenic habitat change frequently outpaces the adaptive capacity of migratory taxa, placing many species and populations at risk of extirpation or extinction due to the mismatch of natural migration phenology and suitable conditions. While dynamic protection can greatly benefit migratory species, it is contingent on the flexibility of relevant management actions. For regulated ecosystems where advanced management planning is required, we present a framework—facilitated migration—for actively matching natural migration phenology with suitable conditions for successful migrant passage. Using a case study of juvenile Chinook salmon (<em>Oncorhynchus tshawytscha</em>) oceanward migration in the Sacramento River, a major bottleneck to the recovery of imperiled populations in California, we show how the conditions associated with migration preparation, migration initiation, and successful migrant passage could be regulated to benefit migrants. Thermally shifted preparation, flow pulse-mediated initiation, and passage protection via increased flow, all accomplished by controlling the release of water from storage reservoirs, could increase the number of wild-origin Chinook salmon populations successfully migrating to the ocean by at least 18-212% compared to the status quo management scenario. To further inform expected outcomes, we find that the temporal scope and diversity of juvenile salmon lifestages studied via acoustic telemetry should be expanded, and that the range of flows and flow changes that juvenile salmon experience should be increased. Facilitated migration works by synchronizing migration—thus, a prudent course of action when implementing this strategy would be to favor event quality over event quantity. In forcing scientists and managers to critically evaluate how migrations can be supported and manipulated, facilitated migration will help migratory species persist in anthropogenically altered ecosystems.</p>

Data for: Short photoperiods end autumn migration in a naïve diurnal migrant
<p>Data are measurements of daily mean flight activity, daily mean activity 1 h before lights off, and daily body mass from individual hatch-year dunnocks (<em>Prunella modularis</em>, a songbird) captured in southern Sweden (55.68 °N, 13.43 °E). Individuals were allocated to either a control or treatment group for investigating the influence of photoperiod on the dunnocks first autumn migration. <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><span>In partial migrant systems, where residents and migrants co-exist within a population, residents are commonly predicted to gain a reproductive advantage over migrants through priority access to high quality territories and an earlier breeding start. Annual variation in reproductive benefits has been suggested to be important for the co-existence of both strategies in a population, as differences in wintering conditions experienced by the two strategies may result in a periodic reproductive advantage for migrants. However, the importance of spatial environmental variation for reproductive output in partially migrant populations remains largely unexplored. We investigated variation in the reproductive output of migrants and residents in a population of Swiss red kites (<em>Milvus milvus</em>) both temporally, across and within years, and spatially, along an elevational gradient. We gathered four years of reproductive data combined with 183 GPS-derived full annual cycles from individuals breeding in the Swiss Alpine foothills. At low, but not high elevations residents produced more fledglings than migrants. We also found evidence for annual variation in the reproductive advantage of the two strategies. Furthermore, while reproductive output did decline with a later breeding start, there was no difference in the start of breeding between the two migration strategies. The results of this study suggest that differences in reproductive output between migrants and residents in partial migrant populations can vary due to both the use of spatially distinct overwintering grounds, as well as being differently affected by spatial variables in breeding areas, such as elevation. The study emphasizes that spatial and temporal variation in reproductive benefits must be considered when predicting how migratory species will respond to future environmental change.</span></p>

Data for: Intra- and interspecific variation in trace element concentrations in feathers of North European Trans-African migrants
<p>The knowledge of migratory connectivity is important for understanding the potential drivers of populations and it is thus important for conservation implications. Migratory connectivity of species can be studied using exogenous, such as rings and transmitters, or endogenous markers, such as stable isotopes and trace elements. The use of trace elements has been much less frequently studied compared to stable isotopes. Trace elements can be studied from the feathers of birds and this does not necessarily require trapping of individuals. Here we studied the variation of 18 different trace elements in feathers of two long-distance trans-African migrants, willow warblers Phylloscopus trochilus and barn swallows Hirundo rustica, using body feathers of museum specimens of birds from Finnish breeding grounds. The trace elements were measured using Laser-Ablation Inductively-Coupled-Plasma Mass-Spectrometry. We show that trace element concentrations were relatively stable along the rachis within the same feather except in Ni and S, which showed a quadratic pattern. In general, variation within feathers of the same individuals was smaller than in feathers between individuals for most elements. Furthermore, concentrations of 11 trace elements showed significantly higher concentrations in willow warbler feathers collected in spring than in autumn, moulted in African wintering grounds and European breeding grounds, respectively. Last, concentrations of seven trace elements were significantly higher in the spring feathers of willow warblers compared to barn swallows. This suggests that trace elements could be used to separate moulting grounds of the birds on the larger scale within the same species, but also sampling design should be carefully considered.</p>
The cost of movement: assessing energy expenditure in a long-distant ectothermic migrant under climate change
<p>Functions to simulate monarch migration under set weather conditions. Data for repsirometry measurements and weather stations are also included in ZIP folders. Functions include working example of movement based on literature values for thresholds. Functions can be modified for other species as needed. Weather station data were collected from NOAA LCD stations. Alternative data sources include Wunderground Personal Weather Station datasets. However, Wunderground requires an API to access their data unless you have a PWS in their system. Connecting a PWS to wunderground provides you an API key for accessing data. </p>
Sex, body size, and winter weather explain migration strategies in a partial migrant population of American Kestrels (Falco sparverius)
<p>Given increasing evidence that climate change affects the annual cycles of birds, it is important to understand the mechanisms underlying individual migration strategies and population-level patterns in partial migrants. In this study, we found that thermoregulation (body size and winter temperatures) was a key driver of American Kestrel (<em>Falco</em> <em>sparverius</em>) migration decisions. The annual proportion of migrants in the population, however, was not explained by winter weather and may be the result of differential survival. We measured stable hydrogen isotope values (δD) of talon tissues collected from 501 breeding and overwintering birds to distinguish migrant from resident kestrels in a partially migratory population of American Kestrels in southwestern Idaho in 2013–2021. We then evaluated drivers of migration decisions by assessing potential correlates of migration strategies, whether individuals switched migration strategies between years, and whether the proportion of migrants in the population changed over time or was correlated with winter weather. Male kestrels were 1.6 times more likely to migrate than females, and in colder than average winters, smaller birds of both sexes were more likely to migrate than larger birds. Only 27% of 26 recaptured individuals showed evidence of switching their migration strategies on an annual basis. There was no temporal trend in the proportion of migrants in the population, but proportions varied between years. Interestingly, there was no association between winter minimum temperature anomalies and annual migrant proportions in the population, suggesting that differential over-winter survival, or other stochastic processes, may play an important role in population composition. As winters continue to warm, fewer kestrels may migrate and more may remain resident on breeding grounds. However, it is unclear how changes in migration strategies might affect population-level patterns and resilience to climate change.</p>
