Evidence of a coordinated network amplifying inauthentic narratives in the 2020 election
<p>On 15 September 2020, the Washington Post published an article by Isaac Stanley-Becker titled “<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/turning-point-teens-disinformation-trump/2020/09/15/c84091ae-f20a-11ea-b796-2dd09962649c_story.html">Pro-Trump youth group enlists teens in secretive campaign likened to a ‘troll farm,’ prompting rebuke by Facebook and Twitter</a>.” The article reported on a preliminary analysis we conducted at the request of The Post. Here we would like to share the dataset used in our analysis with the research community.</p> <p>Our Observatory on Social Media at Indiana University has been studying <a href="https://theconversation.com/misinformation-on-social-media-can-technology-save-us-69264">social media manipulation</a> and <a href="https://theconversation.com/misinformation-and-biases-infect-social-media-both-intentionally-and-accidentally-97148">online misinformation</a> for over ten years. We uncovered the first known instances of <a href="http://www.aaai.org/ocs/index.php/ICWSM/ICWSM11/paper/view/2850">astroturf campaigns</a>, <a href="https://cacm.acm.org/magazines/2016/7/204021-the-rise-of-social-bots/fulltext">social bots</a>, and <a href="http://doi.org/10.1126/science.aao2998">fake news</a> websites during the 2010 US midterm election, long before these phenomena became widely known in 2016. We develop public, state-of-the art network and data science methods and <a href="https://osome.iu.edu/tools/">tools</a>, such as <a href="https://botometer.osome.iu.edu/">Botometer</a>, <a href="https://hoaxy.iuni.iu.edu/">Hoaxy</a>, and <a href="https://osome.iu.edu/tools/botslayer/">BotSlayer</a>, to help researchers, journalists, and civil society organizations study coordinated inauthentic campaigns. So when Stanley-Becker contacted us about accounts posting identical political content on Twitter, we were happy to apply our <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.05658">analytical framework</a> to map out what was going on. </p>

Narratives on inequalities in enablers and hindrances for advancing behavioural change through an inclusive Green Deal in Europe. ACCTING dataset
<p><span>The impact of climate change and the capacity to mitigate its negative impacts are unevenly distributed across and within societies; it is the poorer, marginalised and vulnerable groups who are the most acutely affected. This dataset captures some of the experiences of those groups. It includes 358 narratives collected via individual narrative interviews in 13 European countries during June-December 2022 across eight thematic research lines – each research line addressing an EU Green Deal policy area.</span></p> <p><span>The data was gatered in the EU funded </span><span>ACCTING, which </span><span>mobilises research experimentation and innovation to promote an inclusive and socially just European Green Deal focusing on the inequalities produced by its policies and supporting behavioural change at individual and collective levels. </span></p> <p><span>The project explores the impact of Green Deal policy initiatives on individual and collective behaviours, provides evidence, and empowers policymakers and stakeholders to anticipate policy responses and potential negative influences, and mitigate such impacts in decision-making. ACCTING collects new data on Green Deal policy interventions and co-designs and implements pilot actions to reduce or prevent policy-related inequalities and advance behavioural change for an inclusive and equal European Green Deal. </span></p>
Video Examples from: Establishment and Implementation of Guidelines for Narrative Audio-based Room-scale Virtual Reality using Practice-based Methods
<p>This video accompanies our paper: Popp, C. and Murphy, D.T., "Establishment and Implementation of Guidelines for Narrative Audio-based Room-scale Virtual Reality using Practice-based Methods", held at the 2022 AES International Conference on Audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality.</p> <p>Room-scale Virtual Reality (VR) presents sound designers with new challenges to tell stories with audio in games with player-driven narratives. These challenges arise from the player moving in and interacting with the virtual environment. The paper performs a small scoping review of VR/non-VR games and associated literature to identify issues and solutions to the placement of speech-based audio using practice-based research methods. The review leads to the proposition of design guidelines and strategies for their implementation. The paper advocates that each instance of speech-based audio should be short, interactive, and complemented by non-speech audio. Furthermore, each instance’s spatial, interactive, visual, aural, and narrative representation should be considered in combination. The paper also suggests that 3D-binaural audio informed by physics can aid storytelling and make virtual environments player-responsive.</p> <p>The paper is part of the research project SuperCharging Audio Storytelling: 3D Audio in Virtual Reality, funded by UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) XR Stories Creative Industries Cluster project, grant no. ARN: Analogical Reasoning on Narratives
<p>As a core cognitive skill that enables the transferability of information across domains, analogical reasoning has been extensively studied for both humans and computational models. However, while cognitive theories of analogy often focus on narratives and study the distinction between surface, relational, and system similarities, existing work in natural language processing has a narrower focus as far as relational analogies between word pairs. This gap brings a natural question: can state-of-the-art large language models (LLMs) detect system analogies between narratives? To gain insight into this question and extend word-based relational analogies to relational system analogies, we devise a comprehensive computational framework that operationalizes dominant theories of analogy, using narrative elements to create surface and system mappings. Leveraging the interplay between these mappings, we create a binary task and benchmark for Analogical Reasoning on Narratives (ARN), covering four categories of far (cross-domain)/near (within-domain) analogies and disanalogies. We show that while all LLMs can largely recognize near analogies, even the largest ones struggle with far analogies in a zero-shot setting, with GPT4.0 scoring below random. Guiding the models through solved examples and chain-of-thought reasoning enhances their analogical reasoning ability. Yet, since even in the few-shot setting, the best model only performs halfway between random and humans, ARN opens exciting directions for computational analogical reasoners.</p>

<p>This paper provides a monologue narrative text of the Itoman dialect of the Okinawan language spoken by a male speaker in his 70s. He describes the way worship is conducted in Yukkanuhi. Japanese translations, morphological analyses, and interlinear glosses are provided. The dataset includes an audio file (.wav) and an annotated xml file (.eaf). The Transformative Storytelling Technique for Developing Guided Digital Narratives in Mental Health Support. Pilot study
<p>In a society where advances and innovations occur on a daily basis, the development of digital mental health tools continues at almost uncontrollable rates. Following trends in the utilization of storytelling across fields and reflecting on the lack of working models and frameworks for the application of storytelling for mental health support, the Transformative Storytelling Technique (TST) is designed and developed as a part of this work. This technique represents a new category for creating hybrid content to guide the experience of audiences, starting with the case of informal caregivers. In this pilot study, a TST caregiver story is assessed pre-post in an interventional study, investigating the potential role of mental health audio stories in supporting informal caregiver wellbeing. The anonymized raw dataset is available.</p>

RESISTIRÉ Dataset: Narratives on inequalities caused by policy and societal responses to Covid-19 in Europe – second cycle
<p>This dataset contains 295 narratives, including keywords and specifically telling quotes. It is the second of three sets of narratives collected and analysed in RESISTIRÉ. The narrative interviews were conducted in national languages by the consortium partners and a network of national researchers covering the EU27 (except Malta), and Iceland, Serbia, and the UK in December 2021-February 2022. Narrative interviewing is a qualitative research method that involves inviting participants to tell their own stories and experiences in their own words. The technique is used to collect and share a person’s story which entails both a research methodology and a mechanism for storytelling i.e. both a way of telling a story, and a way of knowing. Narratives as a technique can make visible how multiple sources of inequalities intersect, as well as the situational and contextual nature of inequalities from a single person’s perspective. </p>
