Precipitation from the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, November 2000 - ongoing

Rain level is recorded at least every thirty minutes at the sites SRS 1d, SRS 2 & SRS 3. Not active sites are: SRS 1a and SRS 1c. Rain level data are collected using a tipping bucket rain gauge (SUTRON 5600-0425) attached to ISCO autosamplers, which also act as dataloggers. We condense these data into daily cumulative rainfall, although 30-minute-interval rain level data are also available by request. Minnowtrap Data from Rookery Branch and the North, Watson, and Roberts Rivers National Park (FCE) from November 2004 to April 2008

This study examines temporal and spatial dynamics in the fish community of the oligohaline to mesohaline reaches of ecotonal creeks along the southwest region of Everglades National Park. Sampling is conducted at 15 mangrove creeks in two drainages: Rookery Branch and the North, Roberts, and Watson rivers. The sampling in Rookery Branch expands over a 12-km stretch of ecotonal mangrove creeks upstream of Tarpon Bay. Minnow traps are used to target small-bodied forage fish. Sampling started in the wet season of 2004, and has been conducted three times per year at these approximate times: November (wet season); February (transition); and April (dry season). In the Rookery Branch region, fish abundance varies markedly yearly and seasonally. Catches peak in the drier months, reflecting a pulse of movement by freshwater taxa into creeks as marshes upstream dry. The timing of this pulse is closely tied to the pattern of water recession in upstream marshes, and has important ramifications for wading bird prey availability.

DIC and DOC 13C tracer data from Shark River Slough and Harney River (FCE), Everglades, South Florida in November 2011

As part of the larger NSF WSC funded project, an SF6 tracer study was conducted in November of 2011 by working groups form ENP, FIU and Univ. of Hawaii. This work included the release of the tracer (SF6), which was sampled in a lagrangian approach as the tracer “patch” moved from the fresh water portion of the system to the mangrove ecotone along the Shark and Harney Rivers. The goal of this study was to measure carbon export through the system. Annie Palya used our new CRDS system to measure the isotopic composition (d13C) of the DOM & DIC (analyzed at RSMAS) during this study, as carbon isotopes may help to resolve different sources of carbon. This analytical approach is relatively new, and will be important for understanding the C-dynamics within the FCE.

Periphyton and Associated Environmental Data Relative from Samples Collected from the Greater Everglades, Florida, USA from September 2005 to November 2014

This data package contains peripihyton and environmental data collected annually during the wet season between 2005 and 2014 from sites distributed throughout the greater Everglades ecosystem. This project is part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Program's Monitoring and Assessment Plan intended to document baseline variability in periphyton attributes for assessing the effectiveness of restoration projects. A total of 200 primary sampling units (PSU) of 800 m x 800 m are nested in 32 landscape units and each year, random coordinates are 'drawn' within each PSU and one sampleable draw is visited in each. Sampled periphyton is processed for diatoms, slides are prepared, and 500 frustules are enumerated and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic resolution per slide. Taxon abundances are then relativized to the total count. These data accompany environmental, periphyton biomass, and soft algal abundance datasets.

High-resolution orthoimagery of the Altamaha River estuary in November 2017 and October 2018

We acquired two high-resolution (0.15-m per pixel) color digital images of the salinity gradient of the Altamaha River estuary in November 2017 (1 month after Hurricane Irma) and October 2018. Flights ranged from the mouth of the estuary all the way up to the tidal fresh forest habitat. The 1:1200 scale orthoimagery is comprised of 4-bands (Red, Green, Blue, Near Infrarad (RGBNIR)) collected with a Ground Sample Distance (GSD) of 0.5 foot using a Leica ADS100 airborne digital sensor. Individual tiles were georectified using ground control points and merged into a domain-wide mosaic.

Stable isotope (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) measurements of water column and benthic samples from Lake Joyce, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, November 2014

Water column and benthic samples were collected from Lake Joyce, a perennially ice-covered lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, to support stable isotope analyses. Water column samples were collected in November 2014 at depths ranging from 6 to 53 m using a Niskin bottle deployed through a borehole in the lake ice. The deepest sample (53 m) was collected with concurrent live-drop camera observations to ensure that sampling did not disrupt the underlying sediments. Benthic water samples were collected by divers along the delta front on the north side of the lake, targeting topographic low points at depths between 10 and 28.2 m to assess potential pooling of hyporheic discharge. These samples were taken within ~5 cm of the sediment-water interface using 60 mL syringes. This data package includes stable water isotope measurements (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) to support investigations of spatial variability in lake water isotopic composition and potential hydrologic inputs.

Tea Fire Perimeter (Santa Barbara County, CA), November 15, 2008 - From Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination Group (GeoMAC)

The Tea Fire burned from 2008-11-13 to 2008-11-17, Montecito, Cold Springs Creek and Hot Springs Road, Santa Barbara County. Approximately 1940 acres were burned (information per http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov). This dataset contains a KML polygon showing the extent of the fire on 2008-11-15, and was acquired by request from the Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination Group (GeoMAC, http://www.geomac.gov). These data are based upon input from incident intelligence sources, Global Positioning System (GPS) data, and infrared (IR) imagery. See methods for more information.

Meteor observations and wind estimates from the northern Germany SIMONe radar network on November 5, 2018

<p>This dataset includes meteor observations and wind estimates taken as part of the SIMONe 2018 campaign in northern Germany on November 5, 2018. The files are in netCDF-4 format and follow CF conventions (https://cfconventions.org/). We recommend loading the data using the xarray Python package.</p> <p>The SIMONe 2018 campaign ran from November 2, 2018 through November 9, 2018 in northern Germany. The radar network consisted of two pulsed transmitters in Juliusruh and Collm and a five-element interferometric MIMO-CW transmitter located in Kühlungsborn. Monostatic receiver stations co-located with the pulsed transmitters and six additional receiver stations located in Mechelsdorf, Breege, Neustrelitz, Guderup, Salzwedel, and Bornim were used to form a total of two monostatic and ten bistatic links. The data from these individual links were then processed to detect specular meteor echoes and estimate their parameters, including Doppler shift. The Doppler shifts, imposed by movement of the meteor trail due to the neutral winds, were then used to estimate the 4-D wind field. More details about the campaign can be found in Vierinen et al. (2019). Details for the wind field estimation can be found in Volz et al. (submitted).</p>

Relative Abundance of Soft Algae From the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) Study (FCE), Florida, USA, September 2005 to November 2011

Relative soft algae data collected between September 2005 and November 2011 "The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) focuses on “getting the water right” in the south Florida ecosystem—getting the right amount of water of the right quality to the right places at the right time" (USACE & DoI, 2015. Central and Southern Florida Project Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan) in the Everglades ecosystems. To inform CERP, since February 2005 we have been investigating the spatio-temporal variations of distribution, biomass and diversity of algae (key aquatic primary producers) in periphyton mats in relation to hydrology, nutrients and pH, and other environmental conditions.

Environmental and periphyton composition data from Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands, Florida, USA, July 2022 - November 2022

Environmental and periphyton data were collected from transects in the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands (BBCW) during the wet and dry seasons of 2022 to investigate the rate of carbonate sediment production by periphyton. Environmental data include surface water metrics (pH, salinity, conductivity, and water depth) and soil depths. Periphyton data include nutrient, production, and diatom species composition in samples collected from artificial substrates (periphytometers) placed in the field. Data collection for this project is complete, although the South Florida Management District continues to monitor these transects for a larger ongoing BBCW project.

November 2001 surface water phytoplankton productivity for 10 Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites

Water samples were collected by Niskin bottle or by hand from just beneath the surface during low tide surveys at or near 10 GCE-LTER sampling sites in November 2001. The incorporation of radiolabelled bicarbonate in response to varying levels of illumination was measured using a photosynthetron apparatus. Photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curves constructed from these measurements will be used in conjunction with algal biomass and PAR versus depth measurements to estimate instantaneous gross primary production in the water at each GCE sampling site. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.

November 2001 surface water bacterial abundance at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites

Surface water samples were collected during low tide surveys near ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystem LTER sampling sites in November, 2001. Unfiltered subsamples were immediately preserved with buffered formalin and refrigerated for transport to the laboratory. The abundance of bacteria in each sample was determined using an epifluorescence microscope by counting DAPI-stained cells retained on a 0.2µm polycarbonate filter. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.

November 2001 surface water dissolved organic carbon concentrations at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites

Water samples were collected by Niskin bottle from just beneath the surface during tidal surveys at ten GCE-LTER sampling sites in November, 2001. Water samples were immediately filtered through ashed Whatman GF/F filters and three replicate samples were acidified, refrigerated and transported to the laboratory for analysis. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were measured in each sample by high temperature combustion and chromatographic analysis using a Shimadzu TOC analyzer. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.

Water quality monitoring on the Altamaha River and major tributaries from September 2000 through November 2001

Water samples were collected from the Altamaha River (approximately weekly) and several tributaries (bimonthly) from September 2000 through September 2001. Samples were then collected at less frequent intervals from September 2001 through November 2001. The concentration of dissolved nutrients (ammonium, nitrate+nitrite, phosphate) and dissolved organics (DOC, DON, DOP) were measured using standard methods. The concentrations of 6 elements (Ca, K, Mg, Na, Si, and Sr) were also determined using elemental analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Vertical CTD profiles were collected at approximately 2km intervals from -2km to 10km along the transect during low tide conditions. Conductivity, temperature, pressure and optical backscatter were measured, and depth, salinity and sigma-t were calculated for each profile. Data values collected on the upcast were deleted, and the remaining data were averaged within 0.5m depth bins and interpolated to produce a smooth profile for contouring. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER quarterly hydrographic monitoring program.
