Data from: A tale of two studies: detection and attribution of the impacts of invasive plants in observational surveys

1.Short-term experiments cannot characterize how long-lived, invasive shrubs influence ecological properties that can be slow to change, including native diversity and soil fertility. Observational studies are thus necessary, but often suffer from methodological issues. 2.To highlight ways of improving the design and interpretation of observational studies that assess the impacts of invasive plants, we compare two studies of nutrient cycling and earthworms along two separate gradients of invasive shrub abundance. By considering the divergent sampling strategies and statistical analyses of these two studies, and interpreting their contradictory results in the context of other studies, we also aim to better describe the impacts of the focal invader, Rhamnus cathartica. 3.In a new study of a single site in Minnesota, we observed positive correlations between buckthorn abundance and soil pH, soil nutrient pools, nutrient fluxes through leaf litterfall, earthworm abundance, and root biomass. Multiple regression models showed these relationships persisted after accounting for variability in soil texture and tree species composition. For a separate, more expansive study in Illinois, other authors reported little to no correlation between buckthorn abundance and 10 soil properties, including earthworm abundance, pH, and nutrient concentrations. However, like many other studies, their regression models only assessed predictors related to invader abundance. R2 values for models of ecosystem properties ranged from 0-0.79 (adjusted-R2) for our study in Minnesota and from &lt;0.05-0.16 (unadjusted) for the prior study in Illinois. 4.Differences in sampling error and use of predictor variables between the two studies likely explain the contrasting results. 5.Synthesis and applications. To reduce the uncertainty of conclusions from observational studies of invasive plants, future studies must ensure that heterogeneity of soils and vegetation is adequately accounted for in the sampling strategy and statistical analyses (e.g., analysis of covariance, multiple regression). Particular attention should be given to ecosystem properties with variability that likely predates the invader (e.g., geophysical features and tree community composition). In our study, effects of buckthorn on ecosystem properties were not only robust to the inclusion of potentially confounding predictors, but also consistent with expectations based on ecological stoichiometry and mass balance of element flow.

ASSESSMENT OF ADHERENCE TO NEW ORAL ANTICOAGULANTS IN ATRIAL FIBRILLATION PATIENTS WITHIN THE OUTPATIENT REGISTRY PROFILE. PROSPECTIVE OBSERVATIONAL STUDY (ANTEY study)

<p><strong>Rationale</strong></p> <p>Prevention of stroke and thromboembolic complications in non-valvular atrial fibrillation is one of the most common indications for the use of all NOACs and warfarin in cardiology. The issue of regular intake of all OACs, i.e. the issue of adherence to anticoagulation therapy, is paramount for better treatment. The problem of assessment of different aspects of adherence to OACs in patients with atrial fibrillation within an outpatient registry is of current interest.</p> <p><strong>Primary</strong> <strong>Study</strong> <strong>Objectives</strong></p> <p>The aim of the present study is to assess adherence to therapy and factors associated with adherence in patients with CV disease complicated by non-valvular atrial fibrillation requiring OAC treatment within the outpatient registry PROFILE (prospective, observational study).</p> <ol> <li>Data collection in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation requiring OAC treatment included in the registry</li> <li>Evaluation of actual patient adherence to OACs</li> </ol> <p><strong>Secondary Study Objective(s)</strong></p> <ol> <li>Evaluation of potential patient adherence to OACs</li> <li>Determination of most significant factors associated with adherence to OACs in patients with non-valvular AF</li> <li>Validation of new original questionnaire</li> <li>Evaluation of doctor&rsquo;s adherence to OAC prescription according to Guidelines (ESC). Management of atrial fibrillation,2016)</li> </ol> <p><strong>Material and methods</strong></p> <p>.The study included 201 patients with nonvalvular AF from the outpatient &quot;PROFILE&quot; registry, 118 (58,7%) males. The mean age was 71,1 &plusmn;8,7 years. The study protocol consisted of the inclusion visit (V0), 6-month follow-up visit (V1), and phone contact 1 year after V0 (follow-up, FU). In V0, all patients were prescribed one of the NOACs. At V1 doctors could recommend warfarin or another NOAC to patients, who have refused to take prescribed NOAC. Can we collect health-related quality of life information from anticoagulated atrial fibrillation participants who have recently experienced a bleed? An observational feasibility study in primary, and secondary care and through an online forum

<p>The purpose of the study was to&nbsp;evaluate the feasibility of recruiting participants diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF) taking oral anticoagulation therapies (OACs) and recently experiencing a bleed to collect health-related quality of life (HRQoL) information.</p> <p><strong>Design</strong></p> <p>Observational feasibility study.&nbsp; The study aimed to determine the feasibility of recruiting participants with minor and major bleeds, the most appropriate route for recruitment and the appropriateness of the Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) selected for collecting&nbsp; HRQoL information in AF patients, and the preferred format of the surveys.</p> <p><strong>Setting</strong></p> <p>Primary care, secondary care, and via an online patient forum.</p> <p><strong>Participants</strong></p> <p>The study population was adult patients (&ge; 18) with Atrial Fibrillation (AF) taking oral anticoagulation therapies (OATs) who had experienced a recent major or minor bleed within the last four weeks.</p> <p><strong>Primary and Secondary outcome measures</strong></p> <p>Primary outcome:</p> <p>Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs): EuroQol 5 dimensions-5 levels (EQ-5D-5L); Perception of anticoagulant treatment questionnaire, part 2 only (PACT-Q, part 2); Atrial fibrillation effect on quality of life (AFEQT)</p> <p>Secondary outcomes:</p> <p>Location of bleed; bleed severity; current treatment; patient perceptions of HRQoLin relation to bleeding events.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>We received initial expressions of interest from 103 participants.&nbsp; We subsequently recruited 32 participants to the study- 14 from primary care and 18 through the AF forum.&nbsp; No participants were recruited through secondary care.&nbsp; Despite 32 participants consenting, only 26 initial surveys were completed.&nbsp; We received follow-up surveys from 11 participants (8 primary care and 3 AF forum).&nbsp; COVID-19 had a major impact on the study.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong></p> <p>Primary care was the most successful route for recruitment. Most participants recruited to the study experienced a minor bleed.&nbsp; Further ways to recruit in secondary care should be explored, especially to capture more serious bleeds.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Registration</strong></p> <p>The study was adopted onto the NIHR Portfolio (I.D. #47771) and registered with www.ClinicalTrials.gov (#NCT04921176) in February 2021.</p> <p>Dataset contains all anonymised data for the participants who completed the survey including demographics, details of bleeds, co-morbidities and completed patient reported outcomes</p>

Data for a meta-analysis of the effect of kelp forests on fish communities around the world from observational and experimental studies spanning 1983-2020

This data set concerns the effects of kelp on fish community composition. Data was mined as part of the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) working group on "Global impacts of climate change on kelp forest ecosystems." It consists of digitized information from studies searched (see methods) examining fish community composition with and without kelp. To summarize the study, conservation of marine biodiversity requires an understanding of the habitats needed to support and replenish species of interest. It also requires knowledge about the abundance and diversity of multi-species assemblages. Variation in the distribution and composition of kelp forests, one of the most productive marine coastal habitats globally, can have major influences on reef fishes – a group of ecologically and socio-economically important species. In the face of widespread and escalating loss of kelp forests, quantification of these effects is urgently needed to assess and project cascading impacts on biodiversity. Here, we evaluate relationships between kelp forests and associated reef fish populations using a global meta-analysis of experimental kelp removals and comparative surveys of kelp and adjacent non-kelp habitats. These analyses show that kelp forests increase the abundance of reef fishes, though the significance of this effect varied depending on the structural complexity of kelp forests. In experimental studies, kelp forests have a significant positive effect on fish species richness, revealing that kelp act as true foundation species by supporting the diversity of associated multi-species assemblag

This dataset contains observations of birds foraging at high and low tide at space for time substition plots in tidal creek marshes off the Rowley River and Plum Island Sound in Rowley Massachusetts. The space for time study uses an intensive and comprehensive approach to compare low elevation, Spartina alterniflora marsh areas to higher elevation Spartina patens marsh areas. Birds were observed using timed interval observations, with one sampling bout per tide per site. Very high rate GPS observables at San Pedro Martir, Mexico (SPIG) continously operating station: dataset for the case study. Part 4.

<p>Archived data is on a Trimble raw T02 format from a Trimble NetR9 receiver.
