PDF performance difficulty datasets

Predicting Performance Difficulty from Piano Sheet Music Images

This dataset has been introduced in the paper by Ramoneda et al., presented at the 24th International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference in Milan, Italy, 2023. The dataset addresses the gap in annotated corpora for performance difficulty assessment in piano music.

Dataset Summary

The following table provides an overview of the datasets mentioned:

The collection comprises several datasets of varying sizes and characteristics. The Mikrokosmos Difficulty (MK) dataset contains 147 piano pieces, each classified into one of 147 difficulty classes, with an average imbalance ratio (AIR) of 0.78, including around 49.2 thousand noteheads, all from a single composer. The Can I Play It? (CIPI) dataset is more extensive, with 652 pieces spread across 9 difficulty classes, a lower AIR of 0.33, over 1.1 million noteheads, and music from 29 different composers. The Pianostreet-difficulty (PS) set provides a significant leap in volume, with 2,816 pieces and 9 difficulty classes, an AIR of 0.24, and a substantial 7.2 million noteheads from 92 composers. The Freescores-difficulty (FS) assortment is the largest, offering 4,193 pieces in 5 difficulty classes, an AIR of 0.37, around 5.8 million noteheads, and a diverse range of 747 composers. Lastly, the Hidden Voices (HV) collection, though small with only 17 pieces, has 4 difficulty classes, a perfect AIR of 1, comprises 21.5 thousand noteheads, and features works from 10 black female composers. Each dataset varies not just in size but also in the diversity of music difficulty, composers, and the amount of musical information as quantified by noteheads.

Note: The AIR (average imbalance ratio) is the mean of the individual ratios between each difficulty class and the majority label in each collection.

New Collections

To complement the existing data, three new collections have been compiled:

1. Pianostreet-difficulty (PS) Set

- Retrieved from Pianostreet, featuring 2,816 works with 9 difficulty levels.

2. Freescores-difficulty (FS) Assortment

- Contains 4,193 pieces with 5 difficulty levels from the Freescores platform.

3. Hidden Voices (HV) Collection

- A set of 17 pieces by black female composers with 4-level difficulty labels.

And it is composed also from previous collections:

Mikrokosmos Difficulty Dataset (MK)

The MK dataset, as proposed by Ramoneda et al., is the first publicly available collection and includes:

- 147 piano pieces by Béla Bartók.

- Graded by the composer.

- Presented in symbolic format.

Can I Play It? Dataset (CIPI)

The CIPI dataset is a more extensive collection featuring:

- 652 piano works in various symbolic formats.

- Annotated across 9 different difficulty levels.

Citation

Please cite and refer to the following paper when using the dataset

@inproceedings{ramoneda2023predicting,

title={Predicting performance difficulty from piano sheet music images},

author={Ramoneda, Pedro and Valero-Mas, J. Original CT image stacks of five fossil petrosal bones from Siberia, 3D PDF files of reconstructed endocasts, blood vessels and innervation patterns, 3D PDF instruction file, STL files of the petrosals

Five partially preserved mammaliaform petrosals recovered from Middle Jurassic sediments of the Berezovsk coal mine (Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia) show similarities to other early mammaliaforms like the morganucodontan Morganucodon and the docodontan Haldanodon in having an inflated promontorium, and a curved and apically inflated cochlear canal. But they are distinct from dryolestoid and derived mammalian petrosals by the weak coiling of the cochlear duct and the presence of a perilymphatic foramen with an open perilymphatic sulcus. The two larger and robust specimens exhibit striking similarities to docodontan petrosals. Inside the bone an intricate circumpromontorial venous plexus was discovered as recently described for the docodontan Borealestes, confirming this structure is consistently present in basal mammaliaforms. The three smaller and slender petrosals likely belong to haramiyidans and are unique in showing a septum-like structure medially along the cochlear nerve entrance. The protruding perforated bony bar that is preserved in two of the three is interpreted here to be a remnant of a bony septum with multiple foramina for cochlear nerve fibers, representing an autapomorphic feature of Haramiyida. This newly described passageway for nerve fibers shows that the formation of the osteological structure surrounding the nervous pathways of the cochlea is more plastic among the most basal mammaliaforms than previously thought.

Emergent Solutions on Requirement Engineering for Agile Software Development: A tertiary study (Auxiliary Documentation in PDF)

[Context and motivation] Agile Software Development (ASD) is a new trend in software development and has become popular. Its advocates claim that ASD is well suited to solving traditional software development problems by valuing human factors over technical ones. However, one of the most critical phases in software development, Requirements Engineering (RE), can be overwhelming for ASD values.
[Question/problem] Trying to work with RE in a traditional way for ASD can limit ASD's potential. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate what academia and industry have done in RE to exploit all of the capabilities of ASD beyond traditional RE.
[Principal ideas/results] This work presents an overview of the state-of-the-art Requirement Engineering (RE) for Agile Software Development (ASD). We conducted a Tertiary Study in secondary studies published from 1st January 2015 to 30th June 2021, looking for solutions for RE-ASD using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) protocol described by Kitchenham and Charters (2007). After executing the SLR protocol, we accepted 37 out of 169 studies and encountered 136 solutions used by academia and industry for RE-ASD. We considered only a few solutions that could be classified as emergent for RE-ASD, 24 out of 106. Furthermore, we cataloged the challenges presented by the emergent solutions (e.g., a steep learning curve due to the lack of experience, process, or culture) that should be addressed. Finally, we identified a possible gap between academia and industry regarding these emerging solutions that need further investigation.
[Contribution] By highlighting emerging Requirements Engineering (RE) solutions for Agile Software Development (ASD), we made our contribution to help researchers who need to propose new solutions to some of the problems that remain unsolved by pointing out the recent trends for RE for ASD.

The repository contains the following:

Auxiliary Documentation in PDF;

Dataset from the Tertiary Study - compressed file (refsq2023Complement.zip):

REFSQ2023-ALL-ARTICLES.csv: is a comma-separated file with all 198 (including the duplicates) found in our search in the digital libraries with their respective status (accepted, rejected, or duplicated).

REFSQ2023-DISTINCT-SOLUTIONS.csv: is a comma-separated file with all the distinct solutions we found in our research. Data from: Three-dimensional reconstructions come to life – interactive 3D PDF animations in functional morphology
Digital surface mesh models based on segmented datasets have become an integral part of studies on animal anatomy and functional morphology; usually, they are published as static images, movies or as interactive PDF files. We demonstrate the use of animated 3D models embedded in PDF documents, which combine the advantages of both movie and interactivity, based on the example of preserved Trigonopterus weevils. The method is particularly suitable to simulate joints with largely deterministic movements due to precise form closure. We illustrate the function of an individual screw-and-nut type hip joint and proceed to the complex movements of the entire insect attaining a defence position. This posture is achieved by a specific cascade of movements: Head and legs interlock mutually and with specific features of thorax and the first abdominal ventrite, presumably to increase the mechanical stability of the beetle and to maintain the defence position with minimal muscle activity. The deterministic interaction of accurately fitting body parts follows a defined sequence, which resembles a piece of engineering.
