Data from: Male and female bees show large differences in floral preference
<p>Intraspecific variation in foraging niche can drive food web dynamics and ecosystem processes. In particular, male and female animals can exhibit different, often cascading, impacts on their interaction partners. Despite this, studies of plant-pollinator interaction networks have focused on the partitioning of the floral community between pollinator species, with little attention paid to intraspecific variation in plant preference between male and female bees. We designed a field study to evaluate the strength and prevalence of sexually dimorphic foraging, and particularly resource preferences, in bees. We observed bees visiting flowers in semi-natural meadows in New Jersey, USA. To detect differences in flower use against a shared background of resource (flower) availability, we maximized the number of interactions observed within narrow spatio-temporal windows. To distinguish observed differences in bee use of flower species, which can reflect abundance patterns and sampling effects, from underlying differences in bee preferences, we analyzed our data with both a permutation-based null model and random effects models. We found that the diets of male and female bees of the same species were often dissimilar as the diets of different species of bees. Furthermore, we demonstrate differences in preference between male and female bees. We show that intraspecific differences in preference can be robustly identified among hundreds of unique species-species interactions, without precisely quantifying resource availability, and despite high phenological turnover of both bees and plant bloom. Given the large differences in both flower use and preferences between male and female bees, ecological sex differences should be integrated into studies of bee demography, plant pollination, and coevolutionary relationships between flowers and insects.</p>

The influence of art expertise and training on emotion and preference ratings for representational and abstract artworks.
<p>Across cultures and throughout recorded history, humans have produced visual art. This raises the question of why people report such an emotional response to artworks and find some works more beautiful or compelling than others. In the current study we investigated the interplay between art expertise, and emotional and preference judgments. Sixty participants (40 novices, 20 art experts) rated a set of 150 abstract artworks and portraits during two occasions: in a laboratory setting and in a museum. Before commencing their second session, half of the art novices received a brief training on stylistic and art historical aspects of abstract art and portraiture. Results showed that art experts rated the artworks higher than novices on aesthetic facets (beauty and wanting), but no group differences were observed on affective evaluations (valence and arousal). The training session made a small effect on ratings of preference compared to the non-trained group of novices. Overall, these findings are consistent with the idea that affective components of art appreciation are less driven by expertise and largely consistent across observers, while more cognitive aspects of aesthetic viewing depend on viewer characteristics such as art expertise.</p>

Listening preferences for the different reproduction systems Stereo, Surround, and Wave Field Synthesis in the context of popular music
<p>We did a paired comparison preference test where listeners rated their listening preference for four different pop musical pieces presented by WFS, stereo or surround. The musical pieces were all mixed by the same person in order to try to minimize the influence of the mix on the ratings, but still trying to get the best out of every system, see [1] for details. The mixes are available at https://doi.org/10.14279/depositonce-5173.</p> <p>Here, we provide the results of the 22 listeners that participated in the experiment together with an analysis which calculates a Bradley-Terry-Luce model after Wickelmayer et al. Europe-wide public preferences for plankton-based ecosystem services and marine biodiversity from a series of Deliberative Monetary Valuation workshops
<p>The data were collected as part of the Horizon Europe project BIOcean5D – Marine Biodiversity Assessment and Prediction Across Spatial, Temporal and Human Scales. The aim of the study was to elicit public preferences for marine biodiversity and ecosystem services, with a particular focus on plankton. This dataset comprises responses from a series of Deliberative Monetary Valuation workshops held across Europe, along with the corresponding supplementary material. The responses encompass a range of data, including socio-demographic information, personal characteristics, beliefs, prior knowledge, preferences derived from a Discrete Choice Experiment, and the associated motivations of each respondent. In total, 15 workshops were conducted between October 2023 and February 2024 in the following locations: Poland (Poznan and Sopot), Italy (Padova and Chioggia), the Basque Country (Vitoria-Gasteiz and Bilbao), Germany (Bremerhaven and Hannover), and France (Rennes and Brest).</p>

Maternal effects on the advertisement signals and mate preferences of adult offspring in Enchenopa treehoppers (Hemiptera: Membracidae)
<p>We tested for maternal effects on the mating signals and mate preferences of adult offspring in a plant-feeding insect that communicates via plant-borne vibrational signals. We experimentally manipulated an aspect of the social environment experienced by egg-laying mothers: aggregation density. We detected a strong maternal effect in a male signal trait, with sons of mothers that experienced low aggregation density signaling more. We also detected a weak maternal effect on female mate preferences, with daughters of mothers that experienced low aggregation density being less selective. We discuss the evolutionary consequences of these maternal effects in terms of the signal-preference relationship; the maintenance of variation under selection; whether they may be beneficial for offspring; and potential mechanisms that may be involved in their expression.</p>
