DEM and associated kinematic GPS coordinates of September 2009 survey of the salar de Uyuni, Bolivia
<p>This dataset consists of two parts: 1) the post-processed kinematic GPS coordinates of a September 2009 survey of a 45 x 54 km region of the salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. 2) a digital elevation model (DEM) of the salar de Uyuni surface derived from those kinematic GPS data.</p> <p>Details of the survey design are identical to that from an earlier survey in 2002 and can be found in the manuscript, "Topography of the salar de Uyuni, Bolivia from kinematic GPS" (doi: 10.1111/j.1365-246X.2007.03604.x). The DEM is described in the manuscript "A Terrestrial Validation of ICESat Elevation Measurements and Implications for Gloval Reanalysis" (doi: 10.1109/TGRS.2019.2909739). The DEM was generated from fitting two-dimensional Fourier basis set with parameters: L_x = L_y = 70000 meters, m = n = 10. This results in a basis set with a nominal resolution of 7 km.</p> <p>The attached "salar_de_uyuni_2009_dem" files duplicate Figure 1 from the authors' "A terrestrial validation of ICESat elevation measurements and implications for global reanalyses," whose caption is: </p> <p>Landsat image of the salar de Uyuni, showing ICESat tracks 85, 241, 360 and 1320 (red) and the GPS-derived DEM from 2009 (color-coded with respect to mean elevation). The portion of each track plotted in Figure 2 is boxed in black. Total relief on the GPS DEM is less than 1 m over 50 km.</p>
Twitter dataset of flood-related images for September 2021, Thailand and June/July 2021, Nepal floods
<p>Twitter dataset related to flood events onsets in Thailand and Nepal, focused on September 26/27, 2022, June 16/17 2021 and July 01/02 2021. The dataset has been processed with a VisualCit pipeline in order to automatically filter a relevant subset of posts through automated image analysis, using deep learning techniques. The posts were then geolocated using the CIME algorithm. RGB orthophoto mosaic, DSM, 3d point cloud and LIDAR LAZ of the flash flood damages in Karavelovo and Bogdan vilages, Bulgaria- September 2, 2022
<p>The present dataset contains geospatial resources aimed at investigating and assessing the consequences of a flash flood of debris flow character, relatively significant in extent and magnitude of damage, in the area of two villages in the Municipality of Karlovo, located in central Bulgaria, which happened on September 2, 2022. For this purpose, an integrated approach based on the combination of digital photogrammetry with high spatial resolution and spatial accuracy, based on a fixed wing unmanned aerial system, and laser altimetry (LIDAR), based on a multirotor unmanned platform, was used. The data collection was carried out 2 days after the occurrence of the disaster, resulting in the generation of valuable information resources that allow not only to spatially and quantitatively determine the damage of the disaster, but also to reveal the mechanism of occurrence of the phenomenon: 1) orthophoto mosaic, Digital surface model-DSM and 3D point cloud (from photogrammetry) 2) Classified 3D point cloud- from LIDAR survey.</p>
Equatorial wave filtering during May-September 2020 in the ECMWF OSE experiments with and without Aeolus data
<p>These are files with the global analyses produced by the observing system experiment with and without Aeolus data, and decomposed using the MODES software. Every file contain the zonal and meridional wind components and the pseudo-geopotential. Note that the paper makes use of the zonal winds only. Files including "hel1" in their titles belong to the OSE without Aeolus winds whereas the files with "hel4" in their names are from OSE including Aeolus winds. </p> <p>File names starting with KW belong to the Kelvin waves, file names starting with All contain the total fields, IGMRG denoted the non-Rossby modes whereas Rot belongs to file names containing only the signal associated with the Rossby modes. The Kelvin wave analyses are updated for the period from 1 May to 30 September, whereas other files are available for the periods discussed in the paper.</p> <p>The two movies are named MODES_KW_May2Sep2020.gif and MODES_BalancedUwind_May2Sep2020.gif for the Kelvin and balanced (Rossby modes) zonal winds averaged within 15 degrees N and 15 degrees S, respectively. Advanced Resolution Canopy FLOw (ARCFLO) experiment employing the SUbcanopy Sonic Anemometer Network (SUSAN) in WS01 of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, July-September 2012
This dataset was collected during one of the ARCFLO (Advanced Resolution Canopy FLOw) experiment series’ field campaigns. This field campaign was carried out in WS1 of the HJ Andrews Experimental forest during July-September 2012 by the biomicrometeorology group, PI Christoph Thomas. The ARCFLO experiment series spanned a wide range of topographic conditions (flat, sloped, mountainous) and canopy architectures (grassland, orchard, open forest, dense forest) and was carried out between 2011 and 2014. It was funded through the NSF Career Award in Physical and Dynamical Meteorology to PI Christoph Thomas. The main goal of this project was to develop a novel improved framework to describe the airflow and its transport under weak-wind conditions for a continuous variation of overstory density and stratification. The objective is to i) identify forcing mechanisms of submeso motions, ii) evaluate the impact of plant canopies of different overstory density on the wind, temperature, and humidity fields, and iii) improve predictors for mixing in plant canopies that incorporate the important physical mechanisms. Observations were be made with a unique combination of new and standard techniques including optical fiber measurement of temperature structure, acoustic remote sensing, ultrasonic anemometers, and laser-illuminated flow visualizations.
Morphological and nutritional characteristics of Gambel's Quail, Callipepla gambelii, in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, Arizona (July-September 2015)
Gambel's Quail, Callipepla gambelii, are gregarious birds commonly found in the southwestern deserts of the United States and Northwestern Mexico. With expanding urbanization, these birds are often found in exurban and suburban areas where they have access to food sources that may differ from those used by birds living in rural-urban fringes. To investigate this question, we compared the morphology and nutritional physiology of quail sampled at sites varying with respect to land use and cover. We hypothesized that quail living in urbanized areas have access to a greater variety of food sources and to more stable food resources, and so are in better body condition, than quail residing in less urbanized areas. We sampled birds at locations in the Phoenix, Arizona (USA) area, that vary with respect to land use and cover types. Birds were weighed and we measured their body length and chest circumference. A blood sample was collected from the jugular vein of each individual for analysis of plasma glucose, total proteins, triglycerides, and free glycerol using commercially available kits. Consistent with our hypothesis, birds living in more urbanized environments were longer, and they had larger chest circumferences and greater circulating triglyceride concentrations than birds living in less developed areas, suggesting greater access to lipid-rich foods. In addition, the abundance of grass at the sampling sites was associated positively with plasma protein concentrations but negatively with plasma free glycerol levels. Areas with more grass may provide birds with less dietary fats than the diet of urban birds, resulting in the breakdown of triglycerides into free glycerol. These findings are the first to demonstrate an association between urbanization and the morphology and nutritional physiology of Gambel's Quail.
Biogeochemical data collected from Northeast Shark Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER) from September 2006 to September 2008
Each site's physical characteristics (pH, water depth and temperature) were measured in the field and recorded. Two water samples (filtered and unfiltered) were collected from each throw, along with a floc sample (if present). All samples were taken back to the lab for analysis (e.g. water content, % organic matter, bulk density, and TP/TN/TC).
Macrophyte count data collected from Northeast Shark Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER) from September 2006 to September 2008
Three 1m2 throws are made within a few meters of each site center. Within each throw, all emergent macrophytes are counted (live and dead) and recorded. Submerged periphyton-associated aquatic vegetation are identified and recorded as a percentage of the total periphyton component. Macrophyte cover is recorded in percent cover, and average plant height is determined from three representative plants. Water depth is also recorded as an average of three depths.
Periphyton data collected from Northeast Shark Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER) from September 2006 to September 2008
Periphyton assessments were conducted and recorded for each throw. Periphyton volumes, cover, type and composition were recorded, along with some general observations of the area. Periphyton samples were brought back for processing, and archived for soft algae, diatom, chlorophyll a, biomass and nutrient analysis.
Relative Abundance of Soft Algae From the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) Study (FCE), Florida, USA, September 2005 to November 2011
Relative soft algae data collected between September 2005 and November 2011 "The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) focuses on “getting the water right” in the south Florida ecosystem—getting the right amount of water of the right quality to the right places at the right time" (USACE & DoI, 2015. Central and Southern Florida Project Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan) in the Everglades ecosystems. To inform CERP, since February 2005 we have been investigating the spatio-temporal variations of distribution, biomass and diversity of algae (key aquatic primary producers) in periphyton mats in relation to hydrology, nutrients and pH, and other environmental conditions.
Institutional Dimensions of Restoring Everglades Water Quality -Interview Notes (FCE), September 2014-July 2015
These data were compiled through semi-structured and open-ended interviews as part of the Institutional Dimensions of Restoring Everglades Water Quality research project. The notes represent responses from farmers, agricultural extension agents, state and federal government officials, private water consultants, and nonprofit officials involved in the implementation of the Everglades Forever Act regulations. These mandate that farms in the Everglades Agricultural Area implement best management practices to reduce phosphorus enrichment. Since the regulations started in 1994, water quality has steadily improved. The research sought to explain why the regulations have been effective.
Biogeochemical data collected from Northeast Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park, Florida, USA, September 2006 - April 2025
This project was established in 2006 to document the pattern of abundance of key ecological indicators (e.g., surface water, soil, floc, periphyton and sawgrass) across the NESRS landscape. A total of 30 sites were established and monitored in 2006, 2007 and 2008. After the completion of 1-mile bridge in 2012, additional 10 new sites were established to observe the ecological impact of 1-mile bridge (known as Bridge & Census sites). In 2015, additional 40 sites were established along eight transects (T1-T8, known as near canal sites) in ENP marshes starting at, and roughly perpendicular to the L-29 canal. The purpose of these sites was to monitor the potential effects of Modified Water Deliveries (MWD) operations on changing nutrient concentrations and ratios in key ecological compartments due to increased downstream discharges from the L-29 canal beneath the 1-mile and 2.6-mile bridges and culverts along Tamiami Trail. Data collection is complete.
Periphyton Abundance and Structural Traits, Diatom Taxa Relative Abundance, and Associated Environmental Data from Samples Collected from the Greater Everglades, Florida, USA from September 2005 - ongoing
This data package contains benthic algae (periphyton) and environmental data collected annually during the wet season between 2005 and 2021 from sites distributed throughout the greater Everglades ecosystem. This project is part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Program's Monitoring and Assessment Plan (CERP MAP) intended to document baseline variability in periphyton attributes for assessing the effectiveness of restoration projects. A total of 200 primary sampling units (PSU) of 800 m x 800 m are nested in 32 landscape units (LSU) and each year, random coordinates are 'drawn' within each PSU and one draw is visited in each sampleable PSU. Sampled periphyton is processed for aggregate structural traits (i.e., biomass, chlorophyll-a, organic content, and phosphorus concentration) and for diatom taxa. For diatoms, slides are prepared, and at least 500 frustules are enumerated and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic resolution per slide. Taxon abundances are then relativized to the total count. These data accompany environmental and spatial data for each sampled draw. In addition to the CERP MAP data, this dataset also includes data on the same variables collected from up to 21 primary sampling units in the Broward County Water Preserve Area beginning in 2020. The data in this package replace and supersede those in package knb-lter-fce.1210 (https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/mapbrowse?scope=knb-lter-fce&identifier=1210).
September 2002 surface water phytoplankton productivity for 10 Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Water samples were collected by Niskin bottle or by hand from just beneath the surface during low tide surveys at or near 10 GCE-LTER sampling sites in September 2002. The incorporation of radiolabelled bicarbonate in response to varying levels of illumination was measured using a photosynthetron apparatus. Photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curves constructed from these measurements will be used in conjunction with algal biomass and PAR versus depth measurements to estimate instantaneous gross primary production in the water at each GCE sampling site. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.
September 2002 surface water bacterial abundance at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Surface water samples were collected during low tide surveys near ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystem LTER sampling sites in September, 2002. Unfiltered subsamples were immediately preserved with buffered formalin and refrigerated for transport to the laboratory. The abundance of bacteria in each sample was determined using an epifluorescence microscope by counting DAPI-stained cells retained on a 0.2µm polycarbonate filter. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.
September 2002 surface water dissolved organic carbon concentrations at ten Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Water samples were collected by Niskin bottle from just beneath the surface during tidal surveys at ten GCE-LTER sampling sites in September, 2002. Water samples were immediately filtered through ashed Whatman GF/F filters and three replicate samples were acidified, refrigerated and transported to the laboratory for analysis. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were measured in each sample by high temperature combustion and chromatographic analysis using a Shimadzu TOC analyzer. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.

Two hydrographic surveys and one anchor station time series survey were performed on September 25, 2003, along an east-to-west transect through Doboy Sound near Sapelo Island, Georgia (Doboy Sound Transect, GCE-DB). Vertical CTD profiles were collected at approximately 2km intervals from -2km to 12km along the transect during low tide and high tide conditions. Conductivity, temperature, pressure and optical backscatter were measured, and depth, salinity and sigma-t were calculated for each profile. Data values collected on the upcast were deleted, and the remaining data were averaged within 0.5m depth bins and interpolated to produce a smooth profile for contouring. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER quarterly hydrographic monitoring program.
