Size of an interspecific competitor may be a source of information in reproductive decisions

Animals use interspecific cues as a source of information in decision-making, but the full costs and benefits of interspecific information use are unknown. We tested whether pied flycatchers use the body size and clutch size of great tits as cues in their reproductive decisions and what are the possible fitness consequences as a function of great tit size. The size of great tit females was positively associated with flycatchers' probability to settle near a tit nest over a territory further away. Flycatcher egg mass was positively correlated with great tit female size regardless of flycatcher territory choice. However, in flycatchers that had chosen to nest near great tits, the size of nestlings decreased in relation to increasing great tit female size. Our results demonstrate the use of size of interspecifics as a cue in reproductive decisions and the trade-off between the value of information and costs of competition information users face when using interspecific information in decision-making.

Supporting material for PyESDv1.0.1 An open-source Python framework for empirical-statistical downscaling of climate information

The nature and severity of climate change impacts varies significantly from region to region. Consequently, high-resolution climate information is needed for meaningful impact assessments and the design of mitigation strategies. This demand has led to an increase in the coupling of Empirical Statistical Downscaling (ESD) models to General Circulation Model (GCM) simulations of future climate. Here, we present a new open-source Python package (pyESD; github.com/Dan-Boat/PyESD) that implements several Perfect Prognosis ESD (PP-ESD) methods and the whole downscaling cycle. The latter includes routines for data preparation, predictor selection and construction, model selection and training, evaluation, utility tools for relevant statistical tests, visualization, and more. The package includes a collection of well-established Machine Learning algorithms and allows the user to choose a variety of estimators, cross-validation schemes, objective function measures, hyperparameter optimization, etc., in relatively few lines of code. The package is highly modular and flexible and allows quick and reproducible downscaling of any climate information, such as precipitation, temperature, wind speed, or even glacial retreat. The dataset presented here serves as supporting material for the package description and evaluation manuscript

Examining the relationship between processing fluency and memory for source information

Familiarity-based processes such as processing fluency can influence memory judgements in tests of item recognition. Many conventional accounts of source memory assume minimal influence of familiarity on source memory, but recent work has suggested that source memory judgements are affected when test stimuli are processed with greater fluency as a result of priming. The present experiments investigated the relationship between fluency and the accuracy of source memory decisions. Participants studied words presented with different source attributes. During test, they identified words that gradually clarified on screen through progressive de-masking, made old/new and source memory judgements, and reported confidence ratings for those words. Response times (RTs) recorded from the item identification task formed the basis of a fluency measure, and identification RTs were compared across categories of item recognition, source accuracy, and confidence. Identification RTs were faster in trials with correct retrieval of source information compared to trials for which source could not be accurately retrieved. These findings are consistent with the assumption that familiarity-based processes can contribute to source memory judgements.
