Carbon and nitrogen isotopes and concentrations in terrestrial plants from a six-year (2006-2012) fertilization experiment at the Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station, Alaska.

The data set describes stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and carbon and nitrogen concentrations from an August 2012 pluck of a fertilization experiment begun in 2006. Fertilization was with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Fertilization levels included control, F2, F5, and F10, with F2 corresponding to yearly additions of 2 g/m2 N and 1 g/m2 P, F5 corresponding to yearly additions of 5 g/m2 N and 2.5 g/m2 P, and F10 corresponding to yearly additions of 10 g/m2 N and 5 g/m2 P. After harvest, plants were separated by species and then by tissue. Tissues were then dried, ground and analyzed for stable isotopes and concentrations at the University of New Hampshire stable isotope laboratory.

Presence/absence of new snow-fall scored from time-lapse photography collected near Toolik Field Station, Alaska, summers 2012-2016

This data set describes the presence/absence of new snowfall approximated daily using time -lapse photography images near Toolik Field Station during summers from 2012 to 2016 under National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs ARC 0908444 (to Laura Gough), ARC 0908602 (to Natalie Boelman), and ARC 0909133 (to John Wingfield). Additional cameras funded by other grants were also used for scoring including multiple Toolik EDC timelapse images taken at Toolik, Atigun Ridge, and Imnavait. Additional data were scored from time lapse photography taken by the Deegan and Urban labs (Office of Polar Programs #0902153 and #1417664). Fish tag data remotely detected using whole stream antennas or hand held tag readers in the Kuparuk, Itkilik, and Sagavanirktok drainages near Toolik Field Station, Alaska, from 2010 to 2017

From 2009 to 2017, the FISHSCAPE Project (grant numbers 1719267, 1417754, and 0902153), based at Toolik Field Station, has monitored physical, chemical, and biological parameters within three watersheds: The Kuparuk (including Toolik Lake and Toolik outlet stream); The Sagavanirktok (primarily Oksrukuyik Creek, but also including sections of the Ailish and Atigun Rivers and the Galbraith Lakes); and The Itkillik (primarily the I-Minus outlet stream, a tributary that that feeds into the Itkilik River). Target species were primarily Arctic grayling and Lake trout, although Arctic char, Burbot, Dolly varden, round whitefish, and slimey sculpin were also captured. This file contains the detectioned fish tags using whole stream or hand-held antennas in the three watersheds. We had no field season in 2014 and thus did not deploy antennaes. Fish were tagged with Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags which can be read with a whole stream antenna to track the migration of the fish, predominately Arctic grayling, throughout the systems. Fish tags detected with a handheld readers are designated in Site ID as "XXX_capture". For "capture" fish time is arbitraily set at '7:00:00'' of the day of capture and tagging because actual time was not recorded. The individual fish data (date, tag number, length, weight, species) associated with the tag can be found in the 2009-2017_FISHSCAPE_fish_tagging file.

To test ideas about local adaptation, we conducted an aquatic common garden experiment at Toolik Field Station, to investigate the genetic component of phenotypic variation among Arctic grayling populations on Alaska's North Slope. Effects of 2015 experimental burn on Eriophorum vaginatum at Toolik Lake Field Station, Alaska 2016

This was an experimental burn conducted in the summer of 2015 to provide sites for an experiment to see whether seeds of Eriophorum vaginatum from different ecotypes could establish in recently burned areas. It consisted of ten 2 meter X 2 meter plots along with a similar number of control plots. There was little seedling establishment but other data have been collected on the plots.

Ecosystem carbon dioxide (CO2) flux light response curves were measured from Arctic LTER heath tundra herbivore exclosures. Plot photographs were taken of each subplot using five consumer grade red, green and blue (RGB) wavelength camera. Structure from motion (SFM) photogrammetric method was then used to derive canopy structure. This file contains the CO2, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data and photographs for each plot.

Air temperature, relative humidity, soil temperatures and soil moisture for Arctic Long Term Experimental Research (ARC LTER) heath experimental plots, Toolik Field Station, North Slope Alaska for 2001-2024-09-22.

Air temperature and relative humidity at 3 meters, soil temperatures at 2 depths, 5 and 10 cm, canopy temperatures and soil moisture at 10 cm were measured in an Arctic Long Term Experimental Research (ARC-LTER) heath tundra site (DHT89) at Toolik Lake Field Station, North slope, Alaska. Only control and nutrient addition (nitrogen plus phosphorus ) treatments plots soils were measured. Note: In version 1 the moisture columns were mixed up. The fractional volumetric water columns were actually the period frequency of the wave of the sensor (Campbell Scientific CS616). Version 3 adds calculated percent moisture corrected for organic soil.

Climate data from the former Arctic LTER Toolik Inlet Wet Sedge Flux site, Toolik Field Station, Alaska 2017 to 2025.

One-minute averages of air temperature and relative humidity, soil temperature and moisture, and solar radiation from 2017 to 2025 for the former Arctic LTER Toolik wet sedge eddy covariance flux site. This site was originally set up for seasonal eddy covariance flux measurements during the summers of 2010–2015 and partially during winters starting in 2014, until 15 June 2016. Flux data are reported in Eugster et al.(2020)(doi:10.5194/amt-2019-402). IMPORTANT NOTE: The data has only been checked for obvious outliers. Use with caution since most of the data has not been carefully checked. It was decided to release this version instead of waiting until there were resources for a complete check.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Zooplankton density,were taken with a 30 cm diameter plankton net with 156 um mesh plankton netting, for all samples collected from Toolik Lake and lakes near the Toolik Field Station, Arctic LTER from 2003 - 2017. The Arctic is one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth. Responses to this warming involve acceleration of processes common to other ecosystems around the world (e.g., shifts in plant community composition) and changes to processes unique to the Arctic (e.g., carbon loss from permafrost thaw). The objectives of the Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Project for 2017-2023 are to use the concepts of biogeochemical and community “openness” and “connectivity” to understand the responses of arctic terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems to climate change and disturbance. These objectives will be met through continued long-term monitoring of changes in undisturbed terrestrial, stream, and lake ecosystems in the vicinity of Toolik Lake, Alaska, observations of the recovery of these ecosystems from natural and imposed disturbances, maintenance of existing long-term experiments, and initiation of new experimental manipulations. Based on these data, carbon and nutrient budgets and indices of species composition will be compiled for each component of the arctic landscape to compare the biogeochemistry and community dynamics of each ecosystem in relation to their responses to climate change and disturbance and to the propagation of those responses ac

Kuparuk River Whole Stream Metabolism Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station Alaska 2012-2017

The Kuparuk River has been the central research location on the impact of added phosphorus to arctic streams. Additions of phosphorus occred since 1983. Today, 4 specific reaches show certain characteristics based on the years that they recieved fertilization. Whole Stream Metabolism is a way to quantify primary production of this stream system. Calculations were done using dissolved oxygen, discharge, stage, light and temperature measured by sondes and other equipment strategically deployed in the field at locations to quantify each of the unique stream reaches.

Soil respiration from a mycorrhizal and root exclusion experiment at Toolik Lake Field Station and Anaktuvuk River Burn, Alaska in 2016

Organic soil from either the Anaktuvik severe burn or Toolik Lake were collected to test of effect of removal of mycorrhizae on decompositon of tundra at Toolik Lake and the Anaktuvuk Burn IN 2016. A licor 6400 with 6400-09 soil respiration chamber was used to measure soil respiration (efflux) from the cores on a weekly basis.
