This dataset contains an annual summary of stem growth data for Morella cerifera (formerly Myrica cerifera)shrubs. Data was collected yearly starting in 1990 until 2007 and irregularly thereafter.
Quantifying Changes along Mainland Marshes in the Virginia Coast Reserve, 1957-2011: GIS data
This dataset contains data that quantifies the long-term rate of change in the shoreline position along seaside mainland marshes of the Virginia Coast Reserve between 1957 and 2009. It also contains data that delineates potential areas available for future marsh transgression under three different sea level rise scenarios based on current land use and elevation data. Shoreline position was determined for ten individual mainland marsh sites 3-4 km in length, plus the full length of the mainland marsh edge along the entire seaside length of the peninsula, based on aerial imagery from 1957, 1966, 1989, 2002, and 2009. The ten marsh sites (north to south) were at Gargathy Bay, Cedar Island Bay, Hummock Cove, Wachapreague, North Matulakin Marsh, Short and Long Prong Marshes, Crabbing Marsh, Oyster, Mockhorn Bay, and Marion Scott Cove. Metrics of the rate of change were determined using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), an ArcGIS extension (Thieler et al., 2009). Given the digitized shorelines and a parallel baseline as inputs, DSAS creates evenly-spaced transects perpendicular to the baseline and calculates the rate of shoreline change using a variety of methods, including the End Point Rate (EPR), linear regression rate (LRR), and various iterative and weighted linear regressions. Statistics for these regressions are included in the transect and summary point attribute data. Areas potentially suitable for future marsh transgression based on land use were determined based on 2005 NOAA Coastal Change Analysis Program (CCAP) data and consisted of upland and wetland areas currently in forest or scrub/shrub cover and adjacent to existing marshes. The acreage of these potential marsh areas that could be inundated and unavailable for marsh transgression under three different sea level rise scenarios was also determined based on elevation data from 2010 LiDAR surveys (see VCRLTER dataset VCR12194). This dataset contains data that quantifies the long-term rate of change in the shoreline position along seaside mainland marshes of the Virginia Coast Reserve between 1957 and 2009. Additionally, the tabular data contains sediment grain size analysis results from sediment cores collected in 2011 at six of the ten study sites, plus GPS elevation profiles of the marsh edges at those sites. GPS Survey Monuments on the Virginia Coast Reserve 1992-1994
The Virginia Coast Reserve Long-term Ecological Research project, in association with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, conducted an intensive GPS survey during February 1992. A second GPS survey was conducted in August 1994 to add supplemental GPS monuments. Most monuments consist of stainless steel pipes driven to refusal and topped with a bolt with a point imprinted on it. Others may consist of existing markers or cultural features. Elevations refer to the monument, not the surrounding ground surface. All data were processed by the VCR/LTER. Several caveats must be applied to use of this survey network: 1. These are preliminary results and are subject to change as the network is revised. 2. This network is designed for research purposes only, the data are not suitable for legal uses of survey data. 3. The network includes several US Government benchmarks, but except for the VCR1 monument recently resurveyed and "fixed" by the National Geodetic Survey (see below), the coordinates for those benchmarks have not been adjusted to agree with blue-book values for those benchmarks. 4. Elevations are based on mean sea-level (NAVD88) for a single point (VCR1). No geoid corrections have been applied to any other point. *** Update: MINOR coordinate shifts resulting from NGS adjustment of the VCR1 monument's estimated lat/lon following the NAD83 (Va) HARN adjustment of 2011 have been calculated (0.017 m S, 0.001 m W), but not otherwise applied to the data. A shapefile of the VCR GPS network based on the original coordinates has also been included.

Hurricane record for the Virginia Coast Reserve, 1667-1976
Goals for project BPH8801 --> To build an inventory of tropical storms on the VCR from 1650 to present. While tropical storms are infrequent (several landfalls per 100 years) the magnitude of the disturbance is great. Storm surges 10 feet plus are expected with waves of 17 to 23 feet offshore. The record being developed will serve as a benchmark and will serve when the next tropical storm comes. Comparisons of frequency and magnitude can be detailed and can be used in model studies.

Coordinates of Parramore Island Permanent Vegetation Monitoring Plots. Coordinates are for plot center. Projection = UTM zone 18. Units = meters. Datum/Spheroid = NAD83/GRS80. These coordinates should be equivalent to those received by GPS using the WGS84 spheroid, and are in the form most useful for navigating in the field using handheld GPS. GPS locations are only approximate. See notes from the 1996 and 1992-93 surveys for additional descriptiions of the plot coordinates, including triangulation details from local landmarks.

This dataset includes both the original 1993 and the resurveyed 1996 data. It includes a number of corrections to the original data, and as such it SUPPLANTS and should be used in place of the older "VCR97012 : Shrub Data" dataset.

Root biomass on Northern Hog Island at the Virginia Coast Reserve 1991-1992
The data include live fine root biomass, dead fine root biomass, and detrital material. biomass was sampled at 10, 20,30 and 40 cm depths. All data are in g/m-squared separated by depth. Fine roots were less than or equal to 2 mm diameter. Roots were extracted from dune and swale plant communities across a barrier island chronosequence.

The data include live fine roots (less than or equal to 2 mm diameter). Root growth was sampled at 10, 20, 30 and 40 cm depth. All data are in g/meter square/year. Fine roots were extracted along a chronosequence of barrier island and dune communities.
Historical shorelines on Wreck Island of the Virginia Coast Reserve 1888-2003
This dataset consists of two components. An ArcGIS "shapefile" containing digitized boundary lines for the shoreline of Wreck Island for the years 1888 (partial), 1911 (partial), 1942, 1959, 1980 obtained from a NOAA coastal change map (1:24,000), 1994 (from USGS orthophotos) and October 2003 (after hurricane Isabel, from ETM+ Landsat 7 image). A mosaic of the 1994 orthophotos is also included as a GeoTIFF formated image. All data is in UTM zone 18N and uses the NAD83 datum.
