Genomic tests of body plan transitions from bilateral to pentameric symmetry in Echinoderms
Echinoderms are an exceptional group in bilaterians in that they develop pentameral adult symmetry from a bilaterally symmetric larva. However, the genetic basis in evolution and development of this unique transformation remains to be clarified. Here we report newly sequenced genomes, developmental transcriptomes, and proteomes of diverse echinoderms including the green sea urchin (L. variegatus), a sea cucumber (A. japonicus), and with particular emphasis on progeny of the earliest-diverged deuterostome, the feather star (A. japonica). We learned that the last common ancestor of echinoderms retained a well-organized Hox cluster genes reminiscent of the hemichordate, and had gene sets involved in endoskeleton development. Further, unlike in other animal groups, the most conserved developmental stages was not at the body plan establishing phase, and genes normally involved in bilaterality appear to function in pentameral axes development. These results enhance our understanding of the divergence of protostomes and deuterostomes almost 500 mya.
Macroevolutionary patterns of body plan canalization in euarthropods

Reconstructing patterns of macroevolution has become a central endeavor in palaeobiology, because it offers insight into evolutionary models shaping the history of life. As the most diverse and abundant animals since the Cambrian period, arthropods provide copious data to elucidate the emergence of body plans in metazoan lineages. However, information provided by fossils on the tempo and mode of this phenomenon has lacked a recent synthesis. Here, I investigate macroevolutionary patterns of morphological evolution in Euarthropoda using a combined extinct and extant dataset optimized for multivariate analyses. Overall ordination patterns between the main morphogroups are consistent with another, independently-coded, extant-only dataset providing molecular and morphological rates of evolution. Based on a "deep split" phylogenetic framework, total-group Mandibulata and Arachnomorpha emerge as directional morpho-anatomical lineages, with basal fossil morphogroups showing heterogeneously spread-out occupations of the morphospace. In addition to a more homogeneous morphological variation, new morphogroups arose by successive reductions of translation distances; this pattern was interrupted only by terrestrialization events and the origin of pancrustaceans. A displaced optimum type of model is proposed to explain the fast assembly of canalized body plans during the Cambrian, with basal fossil morphogroups fitting intermediate fitness peaks in a moving adaptive landscape. Given time constraints imposed by the palaeontological evidence, and owing to the interplay between canalization and modularity, as well as a decoupling between molecular and morphological rates, the rise of euarthropods would support the view that the swiftness of the Cambrian explosion was mostly associated with the build-up of genetic regulatory networks.

Data from: Dense dwarfs versus gelatinous giants: the trade-offs and physiological limits determining the body plan of planktonic filter feeders
Most marine plankton have a high energy (carbon) density, but some are gelatinous with approximately hundred times more watery bodies. How do those distinctly different body plans emerge and what are the trade-offs? We address this question by modeling the energy budget of planktonic filter feeders across life forms from micron-sized unicellular microbes like choanoflagellates to centimeter-sized gelatinous tunicates such as salps. We find two equally successful strategies, one being small with high energy density (dense dwarf), and the other being large with low energy density (gelatinous giant). The constraint that forces large - but not small - filter feeders to be gelatinous is identified as a lower limit to the size-specific filter area, below which the energy costs lead to starvation. A further limit is found from the maximum size-specific motor force that restricts the access to optimum strategies. The quantified constraints are discussed in the context of other resource acquisition strategies. We argue that interception feeding strategies can only be accessed by large organisms if they are gelatinous. On the other hand, organisms that use remote prey sensing do not need to be gelatinous, even if they are large.
