Kruger National Park medium to large mammal species herd sizes & distances to the road - fieldwork data

<p>The dataset consists of systematically recorded presences, from a vehicle, of medium to large mammal species within the Kruger National Park. There is 401 tar and 369 dirt road points within the dataset. Each dataset point has data on species presence, estimated proximity of the animals to the road and herd sizes. Each point also has the following data: estimated cloud cover percentage, surface wetness, rain, co-ordinates, vegetation biome (savanna), road surface, distance to the nearest natural water source and the total number of vehicles passing that point within a 10 minute period.</p>

Praomys delectorum capture-mark-recapture dataset from fieldwork on the Ukaguru Mountains, Tanzania.

<p><i>Praomys delectorum</i> occurs abundantly in both disturbed and intact forests in the Ukaguru Mountains within the Eastern Arc Mountains (EAM), Morogoro, Tanzania. While previous studies have reported that anthropogenic disturbance such as grazing, wood cutting and harvesting has a positive effect on the population density of <i>P. delectorum</i>, the impact of habitat disturbance on its demographic traits is still unknown. We performed a capture-mark-recapture study in both disturbed and intact forest from June 2018 to February 2020 in order to investigate the effects of habitat disturbance on abundance as well as two demographic traits: survival and maturation of <i>P. delectorum </i>in the Ukaguru Mountains. We found no variation in abundance or maturation between intact and disturbed forests, but habitat type did affect survival. However, this effect was sex-dependent since female survival was higher in disturbed forests while male survival remained similar across the two forest types potentially due to differences in predation pressure or food availability between the two habitats. Continuous demographic monitoring of <i>P. delectorum</i> in EAM is necessary given that the increasing human population surrounding the landscape is leading to higher deforestation rates, and expansion of the pine plantation in the forest reserve.</p>

Fieldwork on right to repair

<p>This dataset contains the primary data collected for our Right to Repair (R2R) research project (25 interview transcripts as .docx files) as well as a sample of the codebook used for analysis (one file in .XLS format). It is aproximately 520Kb in size. Fieldwork spanned from September 2021 to November 2023. The dataset consists of 25 semi-structured interview transcripts categorized as follows: 15 with repair activists and campaigners, 5 with technicians affiliated with manufacturers, 2 with industry representatives, and 3 with civil servants involved in R2R legislation. All participants were recruited using the research team&rsquo;s professional and personal networks, enhanced by snowball sampling that drew on the networks of the interviewees. All participants have been de-identified using pseudonyms. However, due to the nature of the interviews, full anonymisation was not possible, as some contextual information could still make re-identification theoretically feasible. Consent forms and any identifying keys are stored securely and separately from the dataset, in line with GDPR requirements. The dataset was analysed and coded using an abductive and interpretive approach, combining theoretical concepts with themes emerging directly from the interviews. Coding and constant comparison were carried out iteratively throughout the project, supported by NVivo software. Data analysis was informed by a non-systematic reading of secondary materials (such as websites, news articles, and media coverage), which are not included in this repository. All participants provided informed consent, and the study was approved by the Universidade de Vigo Ethics Committee.</p>

The experimental cultivations had the objective of building a modern database of crop samples, grown in a controlled environment, to use as comparison for the reconstruction of long-term agricultural systems in drylands. In the face of the COVID-2019 emergency, the project underwent modifications, not so much in the objectives but in the technical development of the research. Not being able to travel to India, the Planetary Wellbeing board authorised the joining of my project with that of Carla Lancelotti (&ldquo;<em>The Multifunctional Rooftop Garden of Dip&ograve;sit de las Aig&uuml;es Building</em>&rdquo;) with the aim of building an experimental station on the roof of the Merce Rodoreda building (Campus de la Ciutadella-UPF), where we carried out the same planned research on a reduced, but significant number of samples. Moreover, having saved on transport, I had the opportunity to carry out two experimental cultivations instead of one, increasing the number of species and environmental seasons tested. The new project, merged with that of Carla Lancelotti, was entitled &ldquo;Water p-ROOF&rdquo;.</p> <p><br> For each experiment, the activity consisted of three main phases: 1. the preparation of the facility (1 month); 2. the experimental cultivation (6 to 9 months depending on the species and season) consisting of sowing, weekly irrigation and lysimeter weighing, plant care and dataset elaboration; 3. the harvesting, drying and storage of the samples (3 months). The first experimental cultivation of sorghum (<em>Sorghum bicolor</em>) and pearl millet (<em>Pennisetum glaucum</em>) landraces has been set on the rooftop of Merce Rodoreda building during summer 2021 (from 15th June to 26th November 2021). In this season, three landraces with five replications of each species were grown in two watering treatments in lysimeters (tot. 60), plus 12 pearl millet plants sown in an experimental sandy soil planter without irrigation. The second experimental cultivation involved two species of wheat (<em>Triticum aestivum</em> and <em>Triticum monococcum</em>) during winter 2021-2022 (from 26th November 2021 to 15th July 2022). In this case, 3 landraces with 3 replications were grown for each species in 4 water treatments (tot. 60) in lysimeters.
