The legitimation of the euro - Focus groups

These focus groups were conducted in the context of the PLATO project, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie funded project investigating the post-crisis legitimacy of the EU. In the wake of the migration crisis, euro crisis and Brexit it builds and tests theory of what would amount to a legitimacy crisis in the case of a multi-state, non-state political system such as the EU. (Project website: https://www.plato.uio.no)

This PhD project studies how citizens perceive and justify the euro, as well as the politics it is connected with (its consequences in terms of questions like solidarity and national autonomy).

This dataset concerns a series of focus groups conducted with citizens in 3 countries: the Netherlands, France and Italy. In each country, focus groups were conducted with 3 social groups: hairdressers, financial professionals and unemployed citizens. In these focus groups citizens were asked about their views about the euro, and to discuss a series of questions on the euro's politics, some preceded by a brief video clip.

Participants have been anonymized; the names in the datasets are pseudonyms and any personally identifiable information was taken out.

Virtual cameras, avatars and real footage of a focus group staged in SQUIVE

A 5-minute video clip can be found online which shows a 2D screen capture of the viewport of a user in SQUIVE (Staging Qualitative Immersive Virtualisation Engine) on a walking tour through the theatre site showing time-slices of the cohort of experimental subjects engaged in different activities across four rooms, for example briefing and dressing, contact dance preparation, exoskeleton performance and focus group. Animated avatars substitute for each participant and the reconstructed 3D scene is populated with virtual cameras that substitute for the actual cameras that recorded the event. Each virtual camera can be selected to re-view the reconstructed scene from the perspective of the actual 2D and 360° camera footage. Moreover, a user can launch AVA360VR (Annotate, Visualise, Analyse 360° video in Virtual Reality) from any virtual 360° camera, so that the user can annotate the clip recorded by any physical camera or microphone in the scene concurrently during the same time-slice.

A Hybrid Focus Group for the Evaluation of Digital Scholarly Editions of Literary Authors

Data from focus group conducted for DiXiT - Digital Scholarly Editions Initial Training Network.

We are studying the use of digital scholarly editions, by observing what users do in interaction with different editions. For this analysis, we chose three digital scholarly editions, designed tasks specific to these editions, confronted typical users with these tasks, and analysed the quality of use in relation to efficiency and effectiveness.

The research leading to these results has received funding from the People Programme (Marie Curie Actions) of the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2013/ under REA grant agreement n° 317436.

SSH CENTRE - Mini-reports: Focus groups on "100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030"

SSH CENTRE (Social Sciences and Humanities for Climate, Energy aNd Transport Research Excellence) is a Horizon Europe project, engaging directly with stakeholders across research, policy, and business (including citizens) to strengthen social innovation, SSH-STEM collaboration, transdisciplinary policy advice, inclusive engagement, and SSH communities across Europe, accelerating the EU's transition to carbon neutrality.

SSH CENTRE is based in a range of activities related to Open Science, inclusivity and diversity – especially with regards Southern and Eastern Europe and different career stages – including: development of novel SSH-STEM collaborations to facilitate the delivery of the EU Green Deal; SSH knowledge brokerage to support regions in transition; and the effective design of strategies for citizen engagement in EU R&I activities. Outputs include action-led agendas and building stakeholder synergies through regular Policy Insight events.

This is captured in a high-profile virtual SSH CENTRE generating and sharing best practice for SSH policy advice, overcoming fragmentation to accelerate the EU's journey to a sustainable future.

The aim of the focus groups was to gather citizen's perspectives, their hopes, concerns and ideas related to the Horizon Mission of Adaptation to Climate Change: support at least 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030. The focus group discussion topics while remaining close to the Mission, avoid specific technical references to allow citizens to contribute based on their differing levels of understanding. As part of the SSH CENTRE project, in total, four focus group series will be conducted relating to Adaptation to Climate Change; Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030; 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030; A Soil Deal for Europe.

Notes were taken during each focus groups and turned into mini-reports. These mini-reports sum up the essence of the discussion: the participants' main ideas and some interesting quotes.

The two data sets presented here are part of a study which aimed at identifying cultural barriers in the adoption of open education in higher education in the Middle East, specifically in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Palestine. This study was conducted in the context of OpenMed – “Opening up Education in South-Mediterranean countries” (https://openmedproject.eu/), an international cooperation project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education programme of the European Union during the period 15 October 2015 – 14 October 2018.

The first document presents the transcripts of in-depth interviews (N=7) conducted in February 2018 through Skype with open education experts, from seven universities: namely: Alexandria University (Egypt), Cairo University (Egypt), German Jordanian University (Jordan), Princess Sumaya University of Technology (Jordan), Notre Dame University (Lebanon), Birzeit University (Palestine) and An-Najah University (Palestine). The second document is a transcript of a focus group which took place in Agadir (Morocco) in May 2018, with open education experts from eight universities: Alexandria University (Egypt), Cadi Ayyad University (Morocco), Cairo University (Egypt), German Jordanian University (Jordan), Ibn Zohr University (Morocco), Princess Sumaya University of Technology (Jordan), and An-Najah University (Palestine). Both the interviews and the focus group were conducted in English, digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim.

For a rationale on the cultural factors impacting adoption of open educational practices see:

Maya-Jariego, I.
