Data from: Chronic traffic noise increases food intake and alters gene expression associated with metabolism and disease in bats

<ol> <li>Anthropogenic noise exposure has deleterious effects on the foraging ecology of many animals. However, the effects of chronic anthropogenic noise on food intake and health condition in wildlife remain largely unknown.</li> <li>We tested whether traffic noise exposure over multiple days would change food intake and would have effects on the health of Asian particoloured bats. We broadcast traffic noise to the bats of two noise-exposure groups (group A, 5 bats; group C, 6 bats) and broadcast silence files to the bats of two control groups (group B, 5 bats; group D, 6 bats) for 12 days. We measured the changes in food intake, body weight, and concentration of faecal triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) in groups A and B. We compared the transcriptional profiles in brain, kidney and liver tissues between bats in groups C and D.</li> <li>The bats exposed to traffic noise had a significantly higher daily food intake and a significantly greater body weight than bats in control group during the period of playback. Faecal T3 and T4 were higher in the noise-exposure group after playback had been on for more than one day.</li> <li>We found a total of 169 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between noise-exposure and control groups. Some DEGs related to stress response were up-regulated in the bats exposed to noise. The 169 DEGs were mainly enriched in Gene Ontology (GO) terms associated with metabolism, fundamental cellular processes, stress response and immune response. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways affected by noise exposure were linked with metabolism, disease, apoptosis, autophagy, phagosome and ribosome.</li> </ol> <p><i>Synthesis and applications</i>. Our results suggest that bats exposed to chronic traffic noise while roosting may need more energetic intake and have a greater motivation to forage than others not exposed to noise, probably as a result of a stress response. Furthermore, chronic traffic noise may increase the risk of metabolic dysregulation, immune disorders, and other diseases. Management measures for reducing noise disturbance, for example, implementing sound barriers, are essential.</p>

Adult picky eaters with symptoms of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder: Comparable distress and comorbidity but different eating behaviors compared to those with disordered eating symptoms

<p>Picky eaters are people who avoid many new and familiar foods because they dislike the taste, smell, texture, or appearance of many foods. When it is severe, picky eating can lead to weight loss or difficulty maintaining a healthy weight, nutritional deficiencies, dependence on supplements to get adequate nutrition or calories, or shame, anxiety, or difficulty engaging in daily life. When severe picky eating leads to these consequences, it can be diagnosed as Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). People who restrict the amount of food they consume (or engage in exercise, purging, or fasting behaviors to get rid of calories after eating) because they are afraid of gaining weight or being fat are diagnosed with anorexia or bulimia when their eating leads to weight loss, nutritional problems, or interferes with life. ARFID is a new diagnosis, and in this paper, we show that 1) adults with ARFID symptoms are just as distressed, and just as likely to have symptoms of depression, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder, as those with anorexia or bulimia, but that 2) adults with ARFID show very different types of eating behavior from adults with symptoms of anorexia or bulimia.</p>

GPR84 and GPR119 in the central regulation of food intake in rainbow trout

<p>We evaluated the role of GPR84 and GPR119 in food intake regulation in fish using rainbow trout (<i>Oncorhynchus mykiss</i>) as a model. In a first experiment, we assessed the effects on food intake of intracerebroventricular treatment with agonists of these receptors. In a second experiment, we assessed in hypothalamus and hindbrain the impact of the same treatments on mRNA abundance of neuropeptides involved in the metabolic control of food intake (<i>npy, agrp1</i>, <i>pomca1</i>, and <i>cartpt</i>) as well as in changes in parameters related to signaling pathways and transcription factors involved in the integrative response leading to neuropeptide production. Treatment with both agonists elicited an anorectic response in rainbow trout attributable to changes observed in the mRNA abundance of the four neuropeptides. Changes in neuropeptides relate to changes observed in mRNA abundance and phosphorylation status of the transcription factor Foxo1. These changes occurred in parallel with changes in phosphorylation status of Ampkα and Akt, mRNA abundance of mTOR as well as in signaling pathways related to PLCβ and IP3. These results allow us to suggest that 1) at least part of the capacity of fish brain to sense MCFA like octanoate depends on the function of GPR84, and 2) the capacity of fish brain to sense NAE or triglyceride-derived molecules through binding of these ligands to GPR119</p>
