COVID – 19 Pandemics: Impact, Interventions, Progress and Future Direction

Though the global health and socioeconomic crisis created by COVID–19withitsrapid spreading nature, high infectivity and fatality rate leading to impairment in human health, psychosocial life and world economy, mass fear of COVID – 19 (corona-phobia) appears forgotten in many countries of the world. Yet consciously or unconsciously the high economic burden, mass emotional distress and abundance of psychiatric manifestations are still being felt including the fear of future similar occurrence. This review investigated the health, psycho-socioeconomic impact and interventions aimed at addressing the menace forced upon the globe by COVID- 19 in order to bring to the fore, the future direction in combating any epidemic or pandemic in the world. We searched for literatures in PubMed, Google, Google scholar etc. using key words: COVID – 19, Pandemic, psycho-socioeconomic, Technology-utilization, Telemedicine for articles addressing the above subject matter. From over a thousand articles on COVID -19, we selected 58 articles that addressed the subject matter with global, regional and local perspectives included and utilizing same in writing this paper. We conclude that future pandemics can be tackled effectively by adopting a three-pronged approach: - public health, early preparedness, and involve-ment of the entire society as a unitary force.

Exploring Immersive Virtual Reality in Higher Education: Research Gap and future Direction - A Scoping review

The rapid advancement of technology in the post-COVID-19 era has positioned immersive learning as a transformative approach to enhance educational experiences. Despite its vast potential, recent research developments reveal persistent challenges and gaps that impede widespread adoption. This study conducts a scoping review using the PRISMA methodology to systematically analyze current literature, identify research gaps, seek the challenge, and propose future research directions. From an initial pool of 414 papers, 75 were selected, comprising 60 research studies and 15 review papers. Notably, 55 studies focus on immersive virtual reality (IVR) purely for educational enhancement in traditional academic settings, while 20 explore the implementation of IVR in education with gaming activities. The analysis indicates a predominance of mixed-methods research within education, computer engineering, and computer science. Most studies are limited by short durations (typically 30 minutes) and small participant groups (under 50), raising concerns about the generalizability of findings. Key themes identified include learning context (21 papers), learning design strategies (10 papers), and immersion elements such as avatars and haptic feedback (6 papers). While positive impacts like increased satisfaction, motivation, engagement, knowledge enhancement, and usability are reported, negative effects such as motion sickness (13 papers) and dizziness (11 papers) persist. Crucially, only 11 studies exhibit high statistical power, underscoring the need for more robust research designs. Challenges identified encompass participant limitations, homogeneity, user discomfort, hardware unfamiliarity, and cognitive load—all intricately linked to design strategies. The implications of this review highlight the necessity for future research to focus on long-term studies, optimize user experience, develop cost-effective content creation methods, and integrate gamification into learning design. Addressing these areas is essential for overcoming current barriers and fully realizing the potential of immersive learning in education.

Conspecific attraction for conservation and management of terrestrial breeding birds: current knowledge and future research directions

Conspecific presence can indicate the location or quality of resources, and animals settling near conspecifics often gain fitness benefits. This can result in adaptive conspecific attraction during breeding habitat selection as demonstrated in numerous terrestrial, territorial birds. There is growing interest in using simulated conspecific social cues (e.g., decoys, broadcasted vocalizations) to manage bird distributions, yet it remains unclear when this approach is likely to succeed. We reviewed published studies to evaluate whether the strength of conspecific attraction in terrestrial birds is mediated by characteristics of species (life history traits), simulated cues (e.g., timing and duration), sites (e.g., quality), and how conspecific attraction was measured. We identified 31 experiments that simulated social cues and compared conspecific settlement between treatment and control sites. We then used phylogenetically controlled meta-regression to assess impacts of 19 moderators on settlement. Nearly all species included in these experiments were migratory passerines, and social cues generally had a strong, positive influence on their settlement decisions, as the odds of site occupancy were 3.12× (95% CI = 0.81, 11.69) greater in treatment sites relative to control sites. Within this group, conspecific attraction was evolutionarily conserved with ≥ 25.5% (CI = 5.1%, 65.4%) of the variance in treatment effects explained by phylogenetic relatedness. However, we found no evidence that any covariates influenced the response to social cues, and we posit this stems from limited research specifically designed to identify the mechanisms mediating conspecific attraction. We therefore developed a research agenda that provides a framework for testing mechanistic hypotheses regarding how cue characteristics, species traits, and spatial contexts may mediate attraction to conspecifics. Evaluating these hypotheses will greatly advance the field by helping managers understand when, where, and why simulating social cues can be used to enhance populations of species that are of conservation concern.

An exploration of trends and future directions in sustainability performance

Current global economic activities are increasingly being perceived as unsustainable. With Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) statement in 2015, sustainability performance has received significant attention from academics and practitioners. Thus, it is necessary to better understand the topics of interest and expand cooperation networks to advance studies in integrated efforts. The present bibliometric research intends to assess worldwide research tendency in sustainability performance on the foundation of publishing outputs, co-authorships amongst authors and affiliated countries, and cooccurrences of author keywords, as well as to identify gaps and make research recommendations. The analysis has reviewed, retrieved and analysed 3680 papers, which were published from 1997 to 2021. The outcomes reveal that since 1997, the sum of publications has been on the rise steadily. About a third of all global papers on sustainability performance was produced by researchers from the United States and Australia, outnumbering the remaining 138 countries/territories. Furthermore, among the 10 most prolific authors in sustainability performance, their current affiliations all belong to the university. Finally, this study proposes a significant research gap for future study of practitioners and researchers. The social sustainability and the relationship between the material flow analysis and sustainability performance should be noted.
