Birds vary greatly in their life-history strategies, including their breeding systems, which range from brood parasitism to a system with multiple non-breeding helpers at the nest. By far the most common arrangement, however, is where both parents participate in raising the young. The traits associated with parental care have been suggested to affect dispersal propensity and lineage diversification, but to date tests of this potential relationship at broad temporal and spatial scales have been limited. Here, using data from a globally distributed group of corvoid birds in concordance with state-dependent speciation and extinction models, we suggest that pair breeding is associated with elevated speciation rates. Estimates of transition between breeding systems imply that cooperative lineages frequently evolve biparental care, whereas pair breeders rarely become cooperative. We further highlight that these groups have differences in their spatial distributions, with pair breeders over-represented on islands, and cooperative breeders mainly found on continents. Finally, we find that speciation rates appear to be significantly higher on islands compared to continents. These results imply that the transition from cooperative breeding to pair breeding was likely a significant contributing factor facilitating dispersal across tropical archipelagos, and subsequent world-wide phylogenetic expansion among the core Corvoidea.

Data from: Genome divergence and diversification within a geographic mosaic of coevolution

Despite substantial interest in coevolution's role in diversification, examples of coevolution contributing to speciation have been elusive. Here, we build upon past studies that have shown both coevolution between South Hills crossbills and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), and high levels of reproductive isolation between South Hills crossbills and other ecotypes in the North American red crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) complex. We used genotyping by sequencing to generate population genomic data and applied phylogenetic and population genetic analyses to characterize the genetic structure within and among nine of the ecotypes. Although genome-wide divergence was slight between ecotypes (FST = 0.011–0.035), we found evidence of relative genetic differentiation (as measured by FST) between and genetic cohesiveness within many of them. As expected for nomadic and opportunistic breeders, we detected no evidence of isolation by distance. The one sedentary ecotype, the South Hills crossbill, was genetically most distinct because of elevated divergence at a small number of loci rather than pronounced overall genome-wide divergence. These findings suggest that mechanisms related to recent local coevolution between South Hills crossbills and lodgepole pine (e.g. strong resource-based density dependence limiting gene flow) have been associated with genome divergence in the face of gene flow. Our results further characterize a striking example of coevolution driving speciation within perhaps as little as 6000 years.

Differential geographical and ecological dynamics allow diversification of morphologically convergent giant bromeliads in the Atlantic Forest

<p>Aim: This paper investigates evolutionary mechanisms that allow morphologically convergent lineages share the same geographical space. We compared the events occurred along the diversification of <i>Karawata</i> and <i>Aechmea</i> subgen. <i>Chevaliera</i> in Atlantic Forest by 1) verifying whether the climatic niches and habitats of <i>Karawata </i>and <i>Aechmea </i>subgen.<i> Chevaliera</i> are similar; 2) testing whether the two groups had the same pattern of colonization in the Atlantic Forest; and 3) evaluating whether they had the same evolutionary dynamics of environmental space occupation. We see the two bomeliad lineages as a model case to understand sympatric diversification in the Atlantic Forest biome.</p> <p>Location: Brazilian Atlantic Forest</p> <p>Taxon: <i>Karawata</i> and <i>Aechmea </i>subgen. <i>Chevaliera</i> (Bromeliaceae: Bromelioideae)</p> <p>Methods: We explored differences in evolutionary dynamics between the lineages analyzing the divergence times, estimating ancestral ranges and habitats, testing niche similarity and evaluating shifts in speciation dynamics.</p> <p>Results: <i>Karawata </i>and <i>A. </i>subgen. <i>Chevaliera </i>most likely originated in the Pliocene and diversified during the Pleistocene. The two clades originated in ombrophilous forests and shared a similar environmental space. However, <i>Karawata </i>and <i>A. </i>subgen. <i>Chevaliera </i>show different dynamics in the occupation of geographical and environmental spaces. Our results suggest that the São Francisco and Jequitinhonha Rivers acted as geographical barriers for <i>Karawata </i>and <i>A. </i>subgen. <i>Chevaliera</i>.</p> <p>Main Conclusions: Differences in spatial and environmental evolutionary dynamics allow the two groups to occupy similar habitats as well as environmental and geographical spaces in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.</p>

The environment shapes the evolution of secondary sexual traits by determining how their costs and benefits vary across the landscape. Given the thermal properties of dark coloration generally, temperature should crucially influence the costs, benefits, and geographic diversification of many secondary sexual color patterns. We tested this hypothesis using sexually selected wing coloration in a dragonfly. We find that greater wing coloration heats males—the magnitude of which improves flight performance under cool conditions but dramatically reduces it under warm conditions. In a colder region of the species' range, behavioral observations of a wild population show that these thermal effects translate into greater territorial acquisition on thermally variable days. Finally, geo-referenced photographs taken by citizen scientists reveal that this sexually selected wing coloration is dramatically reduced in the hottest portions of the species' range. Collectively, our results underscore temperature's capacity to promote and constrain the evolution of sexual coloration.
