Data from: Historical retreat of alpine glaciers in the Ahklun Mountains, western Alaska
The Ahklun Mountains support the only extant glaciers in western Alaska. The glaciers were originally mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey using photogrammetry methods based on 1972 - 1973 aerial photos. We surveyed for presence or absence of the glaciers by fixed-wing aircraft in 2006. Of 109 glaciers originally mapped, 10 (9%) had disappeared. Using aerial imagery of a subset of 76 glaciers at three time steps between 1957 - 2009, we determined the average rate of areal loss was 45% over 52 years. At this rate, it is likely that all Ahklun Mountain glaciers will be extinguished by the end of the current century.
Data from: Dynamic ice loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet driven by sustained glacier retreat

Here we share remotely-sensed Greenland outlet glacier data for 234 individual glaciers. Data include observations of mena monthly discharge (ice volume flux exported by the glacier), front position changes, velocity, and ice thickness for the 1985-2018 period. Data will be periodically updated as needed.

The Greenland Ice Sheet is losing mass at accelerated rates in the 21st century, making it the largest single contributor to rising sea levels. Faster flow of outlet glaciers has substantially contributed to this loss, with the cause of speedup, and potential for future change, uncertain. Here we combine more than three decades of remotely sensed observational products of outlet glacier velocity, elevation, and front position changes over the full ice sheet. We compare decadal variability in discharge and calving front position and find that increased glacier discharge was due almost entirely to the retreat of glacier fronts, rather than inland ice sheet processes, with a remarkably consistent speedup of 4-5% per km of retreat across the ice sheet. We show that widespread retreat between 2000 and 2005 resulted in a step-increase in discharge and a switch to a new dynamic state of sustained mass loss that would persist even under a decline in surface melt.

Thwaites Glacier thins and retreats fastest where ice-shelf channels intersect its grounding zone, dataset+code

Thwaites Glacier thins and retreats fastest where ice-shelf channels intersect its grounding zone, updated dataset+code submitted for publication in The Cryosphere. Dataset includes all data produced in this study, including velocity maps derived from speckle tracking of Sentinel 1 images, maps of rates of ice shelf change and the annual mosaic digital surface models from which they were derived, maps of the basal conditions at Thwaites glacier, shapefiles and masks of the annual hydrostatic boundary (grounding line proxy position), and shapefiles of all hydrostatic boundary features, ice shelf basal channels and surface depressions, intermediate polygons used to filter the features, and digital surface model strips with registration data included as attributes.

Rapid Glacier Retreat in Arctic Canada: Terminus Migration Patterns on Bylot Island

These shapefiles represent the glacier terminus positions on Bylot Island, Arctic Canada, tracked from 1985 to 2020, as part of our study submitted to the Journal of Glaciology on the spatial-temporal changes in glacier terminus dynamics over this period.

Data from: Modelling the consequence of glacier retreat on mixotrophic nanoflagellate bacterivory: a Bayesian approach

This repository comprises data and statisticial analysis from the paper Schenone et al. 2020 entitled "Modelling the Consequence of Glacier Retreat on Mixotrophic Nanoflagellate Bacterivory: A Bayesian Approach" which was accepted for publication in Oikos. The main contribution of this paper is a model for mixotrophic nanoflagellate bacterivory as a function of light availability and the presence of non edible particles such as glacial clay. The dataset consists in results from eight bacterivory experiments carried out during November 2018 and January-February 2019 using natural mixotrophic nanoflagellate community of six moutain lakes from north Patagonia, Argentina. A Bayesian approach was adopted to estimate relevant parameters from the model using our experimental data. The analysis was performed using JAGS interfaced through R Studio, the script is available in this repository.

Glacier retreat creating new Pacific salmon habitat in western North America

Glacier retreat poses risks and benefits for species of cultural and economic importance. One example is Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), which support subsistence harvests, and commercial and recreational fisheries worth billions of dollars annually. Although decreases in summer streamflow and warming freshwater is reducing Pacific salmon habitat in parts of their range, glacier retreat is creating new streams and lakes that salmon can colonize. However, potential gains in future salmon habitat associated with glacier loss have yet to be quantified across the range of Pacific salmon. Here we project future gains in Pacific salmon freshwater habitat by linking a model of glacier mass change for 315 glaciers, forced by five different Global Climate Models, with a simple model of salmon stream habitat potential throughout the Pacific Mountain ranges of western North America. We project that by the year 2100 glacier retreat will create 6,146 (+1,619) km of new streams accessible for colonization by Pacific salmon, of which 1,930 (+569) km have the potential to be used for spawning and juvenile rearing, representing 0 to 27% gains within the 18 sub-regions we studied. These findings can inform proactive management and conservation of Pacific salmon in this era of rapid climate change.
