Morning glory species co-occurrence is associated with asymmetrically decreased and cascading reproductive isolation

<p class="Normal1">Hybridization between species can affect the strength of the reproductive barriers that separate those species. Two extensions of this effect are: (1) the expectation that asymmetric hybridization or gene flow will have asymmetric effects on reproductive barrier strength and (2) the expectation that local hybridization will affect only local reproductive barrier strength and could therefore alter within-species compatibility. We tested these hypotheses in a pair of morning glory species that exhibit asymmetric gene flow from highly selfing <i>Ipomoea lacunosa </i>into mixed-mating <i>I. cordatotriloba </i>in regions where they co-occur. Because of the direction of this gene flow, we predicted that reproductive barrier strength would be more strongly affected in <i>I. cordatotriloba </i>than <i>I. lacunosa</i>.<i> </i>We also predicted that changes to reproductive barriers in sympatric <i>I. cordatotriloba </i>populations would affect compatibility with allopatric populations of that species. <i> </i>We tested these predictions by measuring the strength of a reproductive barrier to seed set across the species' ranges. Consistent with our first prediction, we found that sympatric and allopatric <i>I. lacunosa</i> produce the same number of seeds in crosses with <i>I. cordatotriloba, </i>whereas crosses between sympatric <i>I. cordatotriloba</i> and <i>I. lacunosa</i> are more successful than crosses between allopatric <i>I. cordatotriloba and I. lacunosa.</i> This difference in compatibility appears to reflect an asymmetric decrease in the strength of the barrier to seed set in sympatric <i>I. cordatotriloba, </i>which could be caused by <i>I. lacunosa</i> alleles that have introgressed into <i>I. cordatotriloba</i>. We further demonstrated that changes to sympatric <i>I. cordatotriloba </i>have decreased its ability to produce seeds with allopatric populations of the same species, in line with our second prediction. Thus, in a manner analogous to cascade reinforcement, we suggest that introgression associated with hybridization not only influences between-species isolation but can also contribute to isolation within a species<i>. </i></p>

Data from: Natural and anthropogenic influences on the mating system of the common morning glory

Evolutionary biologists remain puzzled by the often dramatic variation of mating strategies within single species. Of particular interest is the extent to which environmental conditions shape patterns of variation of mating system components within mixed mating species, and how widespread anthropogenic manipulations may influence these associations. Here, we address this question in the common morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea) by combining a dataset of floral traits, estimates of the mating system, and relevant environmental factors compiled for 22 populations of this species distributed along a wide range of environments from the Southeast and midwest USA. We identify a disparate set of environmental factors to influence population-level variation in selfing, inbreeding, and flower morphology. While floral traits are primarily associated with climatic variation, the outcrossing rate and inbreeding coefficient are primarily influenced by the level of herbicide resistance. Furthermore, we find that populations with higher levels of herbicide resistance exhibit a stronger correlation between mating system floral traits and mating system estimates (outcrossing rate and inbreeding coefficient). Altogether these results demonstrate the dominant role that herbicide application plays in the determination of I. purpurea's mating system, and more generally uncover the complex and unforeseen evolutionary consequences of anthropogenic manipulations in natural systems.

Data from: Ipomoea gilana: a new and endemic morning glory (Ipomoeeae, Convolvulaceae) in the Gila National Forest, New Mexico

An endemic morning glory of southwestern New Mexico, Ipomoea gilana , known only from the Black Range of the Gila National Forest, is described and distinguished from a close phylogenetic associate, Ipomoea orizabensis (Ipomoea series Tyrianthinae), from mid-elevation mountains (800–2,000 m) of Mexico and Central America. The new species resembles I. lindheimeri (Ipomoea section Pharbitis) superficially, but molecular studies indicate closer relationships with I. orizabensis. Ipomoea gilana has slightly succulent leaf blades, nocturnal anthesis, light blue corollas, slightly exserted, subequal stamens with filaments inserted 2 cm above the base of the corolla tube and three-locular capsules. Ipomoea orizabensis s. l. has membranous leaf blades, diurnal anthesis, ruddy magenta corollas with unequal, included stamens inserted less than 1 cm from the base of the corolla tube and two-locular capsules. The new species is illustrated and a table of differences between the three species is provided.
