A growing number of both types of scholarly journals have adopted a publication fee – more specifically an Article Processing Charge – as their open access business model, a procedure that has been the subject of controversies. The objective of this study is to characterize Brazilian open access journals that adopt article processing charges. The main contribution of this study is to audit and support decision making of editorial policies and business models for open access that are being proposed by and for Brazilian journals. We defined a sample of Brazilian open access journals using article processing charges extracted from the Directory of Open Access Journals database in April 2018 along with their classification in the Scimago Journal Ranking, Journal Citation Reports and Qualis Capes system, considered as an indicator of prestige of academic journals. The study reveals that a small number of Brazilian open access journals are currently applying article processing charges, with practices varying mainly according to fields of study, types of organization and classification according to the Qualis system.</p>

Mapping the Swiss Landscape of Diamond Open Access Journals. The PLATO Study on Scholar-Led Publishing. Dataset
<p><strong>Context</strong><br> From March to September 2022, the <a href="https://www.openscience.uzh.ch/en/openaccess/plato.html">«Platinum Open Access Funding» Project (PLATO)</a>, in collaboration with the Institute for Applied Data Science & Finance at the Bern University of Applied Sciences, undertook a bibliometric and empirical study of the Platinum/Diamond open access journal landscape in Switzerland. The PLATO project is an initiative of six Swiss universities – the University of Zurich, the University of Bern, the University of Geneva, the University of Neuchâtel, the Zurich University of the Arts and ETH Zurich –, dedicated to furthering community-led scholarly publishing in Switzerland. Diamond open access stands for a concept of equitable open access to and participation in scholarly publishing that is free for both authors and readers.</p> <p><strong>Presentation</strong><br> The main objective of the PLATO Study was to gain insight into the Platinum/Diamond open access publishing ecosystem in Switzerland through a mixed-method approach. The study consisted of three parts: First, bibliometric data were combined with inputs from Swiss open access publishers, institutional open access experts as well as information on journal websites to identify Swiss Diamond OA journals and their main characteristics. Second, seven semi-structured interviews with editors of select Diamond OA journals were conducted to generate a thorough understanding of their workflows, infrastructures, business models, challenges and opportunities. Journal Selection Factors and Opinions about Open Access of Austrian Researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences
<p>Data from the Study of Open Access Publishing Data (SOAP, http://bit.ly/ejuvKO) has been selected to explain why the uptake of Open Access publishing in the humanities and social sciences in Austria is reluctant compared to other fields. Two questions from the survey seemed to be especially relevant in this context: factors to choose a journal for publishing and general opinions about Open Access.</p>
Open Access Journal Publishing in the Agricultural Sciences
<p>A survey was conducted on scholarly research communication and the prospects of Open Access (OA) to the scholarly research dissemination in India by Open Knowledge Society (OKS). The India's National Agricultural Research System (NARS) has been choosen as a case study for exploring the possibility of OA in publishing agricultural research. With over 90 Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes and 42 agricultural universities, established by respective states at State level across the country, the Indian NARS, is one of the largest NARS of the world. The ICAR is the apex organization of Indian NARS coordinating the agricultural research and education of the country. The agriculture research output mainly comes from publicly funded projects, and many of the research centers and universities publish research journals (peer-reviewed) and magazines even in local languages apart from English. Beside, there are many professional societies in agriculture and related sciences publishing peer reviewed journals. However, majority of these journals are traditional print journals and thus are less visible to the outside world. In the country, the researchers cannot have the access to the published literature without the subscription to those journals and many of the libraries do not subscribe all the journals. From India, only four journals in the area of agriculture and animal sciences found in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Hence, it is felt that there is a tremendous potential for the research output to be made available to World with the OKS intervention and with the help of Open Journal System (OJS) software. OKS would like to bring this point forward and hope it can bring some change and create awareness about OA publishing in Agricultural research in India. The survey revealed that there are more than 100 journals which are being published in India on agricultural research by the universities, research centers and professional societies. However these publishers are not aware of the goodness of online open access publications. There is a need for creating awareness among the authors and publishers to embrace the latest Internet technologies for publication of research journals by persuasion campaigns. OKS is keen to promote Open Access Publishing (OAP) using OJS by helping institutions to setup their journals and also build an indexing system for Indian agricultural journals. The result would definitely help Indian researchers and the end user farmer community and also help other developing countries to improve their knowledge.</p>

<p>The file contains all publishers of journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).</p> <p>On August 1, 2017, 9,621 journals were listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Only 32 publishers published more than 20 of these journals and thus have a quantitatively significant influence on Open Access. PLOS can not be found among them, but still has influence, but more qualitative than quantitative.</p> <p>These 32 publishers publish 2,950 journals, which are 31% of all journals listed in the DOAJ. At this date, the DOAJ reported 7,474 publishers, thus 0.43% of all DOAJ-listed publishers produced 31% of the journals.</p> <p>Of these 2,950 journals, 1,641 (56%) are in the hand of publishers who already dominate the market in the subscription model: e.g. Elsevier, Springer Nature (including BioMed Central, Frontiers), Wiley, SAGE, De Gruyter, Taylor & Francis, OUP, Wolters Kluwer).</p> <p>The data was gathered at August 1, 2017 using the Directory of Open Access Journals web interface. The total number of journals at this point of time was 9,621.</p>
