<p>This dataset contains demographic information on victims of violent and property crimes reported to the Anderson Police Department in Anderson, CA. The data includes information on the sex and race of victims. It covers violent crimes such as assault and robbery, as well as property crimes such as burglary and theft.</p> <p>Charges are listed by the CJIS IBR Offense Codes, not by statute. The department did not have a report for the Victim age or race in 2023 due to changing report systems in May of 2023. The reports for 2022 contain only Victim Sex and Victim Race.</p> <p>The dataset was provided by the Anderson Police Department in response to our Public Records Act request and covers the time period from Jan 1, 2022 through Dec 31, 2023. The data is presented in Word format. Each row summarizes individual offenses. The demographic labels are grouped by column.</p>

Data from: Policing effectiveness depends on relatedness and group size
Cohesion of social groups requires the suppression of individual selfishness. Indeed, worker egg laying in insect societies is usually suppressed or punished through aggression and egg removal. The effectiveness of such "policing" is expected to increase with decreasing relatedness, as inclusive fitness of group members is more strongly affected by selfish worker reproduction when group members are less closely related to each other. As inclusive fitness is also influenced by the costs and benefits of helping, the effectiveness of policing should decrease with increasing colony size, because the costs for the whole colony from selfish worker reproduction are proportionally reduced in large groups. Here, we show that policing effectiveness in colonies of the ant Temnothorax unifasciatus is low in large groups and high in small groups when relatedness is high. When we experimentally decreased the relatedness in groups, the policing effectiveness reached the same high level as in small highly related groups, irrespectively of group size. Therefore, our results indicate that policing effectiveness is simultaneously shaped by relatedness and group size, i.e. an ecological factor. This may have major implications for testing policing across species of animals.
Data from: Association of work-related stress with mental health problems in a special police force unit
Objectives. Law and order enforcement tasks may expose special force police officers to significant psychosocial risk factors. The aim of this work is to investigate the relationship between job stress and the presence of mental health symptoms while controlling for socio-demographical, occupational and personality variables in special force police officers. Method: At different time points, 292 out of 294 members of the 'VI Reparto Mobile', a special police force engaged exclusively in the enforcement of law and order, responded to our invitation to complete questionnaires for the assessment of personality traits, work-related stress (using the demand-control-support (DCS) and the effort-reward-imbalance (ERI) models), and mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and burnout. Results: Regression analyses showed that lower levels of support and reward and higher levels of effort and overcomittment were associated with higher levels of mental health symptoms. Psychological screening revealed 21 (7.3%) likely cases of mild depression (BDI ≥10). Officers who had experienced a discrepancy between work effort and rewards showed a marked increase in the risk of depression (OR 7.89 95%CI 2.32-26.82) when compared with their counterparts who did not perceive themselves to be in a condition of distress. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that self-reported work-related stress may play a role in the development of mental health problems in police officers. The prevalence of mental health symptoms in the cohort investigated here was low, but not negligible in the case of depression. Since special forces police officers have to perform sensitive tasks for which a healthy psychological functioning is needed, the results of this study suggest that steps should be taken to prevent distress and improve the mental well-being of these workers.

Data from: Policing is more effective against eggs of non-natal versus natal workers at early colony stages in a bumblebee
<p>Eusocial insect colonies are vulnerable to exploitation by egg-laying workers arising either as natal reproductive workers or as non-natal reproductive 'drifting' workers (intraspecific social parasites). Worker egg-laying is potentially costly to the colony, but queens and workers can counter its costs via egg-eating (queen or worker policing). Bumblebee colonies exhibit egg laying by both natal and non-natal workers: natal workers collectively lay more eggs but do so only after a specific point in the colony cycle, the 'competition point', whereas non-natal workers potentially lay eggs throughout the colony cycle. These features create a special opportunity to investigate whether policing of worker-laid eggs is context-dependent (i.e. depends on worker origin of eggs and/or colony stage). <span>We introduced artificial egg cells containing eggs laid by either natal or non-natal workers into colonies of the bumblebee <em>Bombus terrestris</em> both before and after their competition points, and observed the fate of introduced egg cells and eggs. In both colony stages, the majority of introduced egg cells and eggs were policed, demonstrating that policing was not activated only after the competition point. However, in the pre-competition point stage alone, a smaller proportion of non-natal workers' eggs (15%) remained after 20 h compared to the proportion of natal workers' eggs remaining (24%). More effective policing of non-natal workers' eggs early in the colony cycle potentially represents an adaptive, context-dependent response to the stage in the cycle when all worker-laid eggs are normally unrelated to the natal colony. </span></p>
