Monitoring knowledge, risk perceptions, preventive behaviours and trust to inform pandemic outbreak response.

<p>The study is part of the large project promoted by WHO Regional Office for Europe called &ldquo;<em>Monitoring knowledge, risk perceptions, preventive behaviours and trust to inform pandemic outbreak response</em>&rdquo; and carried out in over 30 countries of the WHO European Region (Registered ISRCTN on 11/05/2021, ID: ISRCTN26200758). In Italy, the survey was conducted administering an online questionnaire developed <em>ad hoc</em> by the WHO in four waves (January-May 2021) to a sample of 10.000 individuals aged 18-70 years. A detailed sampling plan was developed to obtain a representative sample of the Italian adult population. The following variables were taken into account for stratification of the participants: gender by age (four age groups: 18-34 years, 35-44 years, 45-54 years, 55-70 years); geographical area (four areas: North West, North East, Centre, South and Islands); size of living centers (two classes: above and below 100,000 inhabitants); level of education (up to lower middle school, beyond lower middle school); and employment situation (employed, not employed). At the end of each survey&rsquo;s wave, a weighting procedure has been applied to accurately restore the proportionality of the total sample examined with the reference population, according to the most recent data of the Italian Statistics Institute (ISTAT, 12/31/2019). In particular, data have been weighted for the main socio-demographic and geographic variables (e.g., sex by age by geographical area, occupation, educational qualification, geographical area by size of living centers). The sample size made it possible to maintain a sampling error of less than 2% (at the significance level of 95%) and to control the error of estimates within groups or subgroups of interest. The interviews were conducted by Doxa S.p.a. and carried out with the CAWI technique (Computer Assisted Web Interviewing) on an online panel and on the Confirmit software platform used by Doxa S.p.a. The average administration time was about 18-20 minutes. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the IRCCS San John of God Fatebenefratelli of Brescia (n&deg; 72-2020), and all participants provided written informed consent.</p> <p>The primary objectives are to:</p> <p>● Monitor variables that are critical for population behaviour to control transmission of the novel coronavirus, including risk perceptions, knowledge, self-efficacy, confidence in institutions, behaviours, rumours, affect, worry, resilience, trust in/use of information sources and more.<br> ● Document changes over time in these factors to understand the effect of the pandemic process, new developments, events or measures taken.<br> ● Monitor possible issues, e.g. related to misinformation or distrust, as they emerge, to allow early response.<br> ● Identify relationships between variables to identify levers for effective and appropriate responses.<br> ● Explore the relationship of psychological variables (e.g. worry, resilience, trust, affect) with the epidemiological situation and the events and measures taken.<br> ● Identify gaps between perceived and actual knowledge.<br> ● Evaluate the effectiveness of pandemic response measures, and the acceptance and effectiveness of policies and restrictions implemented, including the easing of such restrictions.<br> The secondary objectives are to:<br> ● Contribute to post-outbreak evaluation, thereby contributing to the continued regional/global efforts to better understand mechanisms of crisis response.<br> ● If additional research capacity is available, the data can be triangulated with data on media reporting, COVID-19 cases and other.● If additional research capacity is available, the data can be triangulated with data on media reporting, imported or confirmed cases, etc.: The relationship between psychological variables and characteristics of the outbreak situation can be explored (i.e. how closely the perceived risk mirrors reported cases, relative import risk, media reports).<br> This approach allows a citizen-centred approach where insights into population perceptions and behaviours inform COVID-19 actions, alongside epidemiological data and considerations of economic, cultural, ethical, structural political nature and other.</p> <p>The WHO questionnaire includes 21 different thematic areas noteworthy for the investigation of COVID-19 experience. The questionnaire was translated into specific country language by each recruiting site, following the WHO&rsquo;s guidelines for translations of tools into other languages. The process included the following steps: forward translation, panel experts, back-translation, pre-test and cognitive interviews and, finally, development of the final version. Creating Safe Environments: Optimal Acoustic Alarming of Laypeople in Fire Prevention - Online Supplement

<p>This online supplement contains datasets (raw data) and study material collected in an experimental study by the University of M&uuml;nster, Germany. The study is part of a larger research project (<a href="https://www.brawa.ovgu.de/en/">https://www.brawa.ovgu.de/en/</a>) and examined the perception of acoustic fire alarm signals.</p> <p>Hazards like fires occur regularly and can cost people&rsquo;s lives. Optimal auditory alarm signals enable laypeople to recognize dangers and to protect themselves. Existing fire alarm sound research focuses on alarm sounds and voice alerts presented singularly. We explored a combination of both and aimed to identify alarm signals that work optimally in everyday life. Thus, we conducted two online experiments: In Study&nbsp;1 (<em>N</em>&nbsp;=&nbsp;379), we tested eight alarm sounds regarding their typicality, their familiarity, their arousal, their valence, and their dominance. Siren-like alarm sounds were most effective. In Study 2 (<em>N</em>&nbsp;=&nbsp;206), we combined the four most effective alarm sounds with a voice alert. The voice alert reinforced ambiguity reduction, action motivation, and action intention. Hence, we suggest using alarm sounds with siren-like patterns. They should be combined with a voice alert to foster a quick and specific (target task-oriented) reaction.</p> <p>The ethics committee of the University of M&uuml;nster approved the studies (ID 2021-57-MT), and we preregistered both studies with AsPredicted.org under numbers #77031 and&nbsp;#81137 (see&nbsp;<a href="https://aspredicted.org/vx2rr.pdf">https://aspredicted.org/vx2rr.pdf</a> and <a href="https://aspredicted.org/mt9g3.pdf">https://aspredicted.org/mt9g3.pdf</a>). Proactive conservation to prevent habitat losses to agricultural expansion

<p>The projected loss of millions of square kilometres of natural ecosystems to meet future demand for food, animal feed, fibre, and bioenergy crops is likely to massively escalate threats to biodiversity. Reducing these threats requires a detailed knowledge of how and where they are likely to be most severe. We developed a geographically explicit model of future agricultural land clearance based on observed historic changes and combine the outputs with species-specific habitat preferences for 19,859 species of terrestrial vertebrates. We project that 87.7% of these species will lose habitat to agricultural expansion by 2050, with 1,280 species projected to lose ≥25% of their habitat. Proactive policies targeting how, where, and what food is produced could reduce these threats, with a combination of approaches potentially preventing almost all these losses while contributing to healthier human diets. As international biodiversity targets are set to be updated in 2021, these results highlight the importance of proactive efforts to safeguard biodiversity by reducing demand for agricultural land.</p>

Data and code from: The functional form of specialized predation affects whether Janzen-Connell effects can prevent competitive exclusion

<p><span>Janzen</span><span>-</span><span>Connell</span><span> Effects (</span><span>JCEs</span><span>), specialized </span><span>predation</span><span> of seeds and seedlings near </span><span>conspecific</span><span> trees, are hypothesized to maintain species richness. While previous studies show </span><span>JCEs</span><span> can maintain high richness relative to neutral communities, recent theoretical work indicates </span><span>JCEs</span><span> may weakly inhibit competitive exclusion when species exhibit inter-specific fitness variation. However, recent models make somewhat restrictive assumptions about the functional form of specialized </span><span>predation</span><span> -- that </span><span>JCEs</span><span> occur at a fixed rate when offspring are within a fixed distance of a </span><span>conspecific</span><span> tree. Using a theoretical model, I show that the functional form of </span><span>JCEs</span><span> largely impacts their ability to maintain coexistence. If </span><span>predation</span><span> pressure increases </span><span>additively</span><span> with adult tree density and decays exponentially with distance, </span><span>JCEs</span><span> maintain considerably higher species richness than predicted by recent models. Loosely </span><span>parameterizing</span><span> the model with data from a Panamanian tree community, I elucidate the conditions under which </span><span>JCEs</span><span> are capable of maintaining high species richness. </span></p>

Pretty cool beetles: Can manipulation of visible and near-infrared sunlight prevent overheating?

<p>Passive thermoregulation is an important strategy to prevent overheating in thermally challenging environments. Can the diversity of optical properties found in Christmas beetles (Rutelinae) be an advantage to keep cool? We measured changes in temperature of the elytra of 26 species of Christmas beetles, exclusively due to direct radiation from a solar simulator in visible (VIS: 400–700 nm) and near-infrared (NIR: 700–1700 nm) wavebands. Then, we evaluated if the optical properties of elytra could predict their steady state temperature and heating rates while controlling for size. We found that higher absorptivity increases the heating rate and final steady state of the beetle elytra in a biologically significant range (3 to 5°C). There was substantial variation in the absorptivity of Christmas beetle elytra; this variation was achieved by different combinations of reflectivity and transmissivity in both VIS and NIR. The size was an important factor in predicting the change in temperature of the elytra after 5 min (steady state) but not the maximum heating rate. Lastly, we show that the presence of the elytra covering the body of the beetle can reduce the heating of the body itself. We propose that beetle elytra can act as a semi-insulating layer to enable passive thermoregulation through high reflectivity of elytra, resulting in low absorptivity of solar radiation. Alternatively, if beetle elytra absorb a high proportion of solar radiation, they may reduce heat transfer from the elytra to the body through behavioural or physiological mechanisms.</p>

He is a graduate of the University, obtaining a degree in Pathobiology with Chemistry in 1991 and a PhD in Molecular Endocrinology in 1995. Following a period of postdoctoral research at the Oxford University, he returned to Reading in 1998 as a lecturer. Jon has established an internationally leading research group that studies blood clotting, with a particular focus on the development of more effective clinical strategies for the prevention and treatment of heart attacks and strokes, and thrombosis associated with infection. Jon values greatly working in an active, engaging and successful school, in which all aspects of biology are represented, and he champions cross-disciplinary working to approach today&rsquo;s most challenging and pressing questions in new ways. Preventative medicine? Examining prophylactic effects of a sunflower pollen diet in Bombus impatiens

<p>The widespread decline of pollinator populations is of concern for both natural and agricultural ecosystems. Pathogens have been identified as a major contributor to the decline of some bee species, making understanding host-pathogen dynamics a crucial area of research. Sunflower pollen (<em>Helianthus annuus</em>) dramatically and consistently reduces infection by a prevalent gut pathogen, <em>Crithidia bombi</em>, in the common eastern bumble bee (<em>Bombus impatiens</em>), when consumed by bees post-infection, but we do not know if sunflower can confer protection when consumed before exposure. We asked whether feeding bumble bees sunflower pollen diets before pathogen exposure decreases <em>Crithidia</em> infection compared to buckwheat pollen (<em>Fagopyrum esculentum</em>). Buckwheat pollen was used as a comparison since it has a similar protein concentration as sunflower pollen, but results in high <em>Crithidia</em> counts when consumed post-infection. Bumble bees were fed sunflower or buckwheat pollen for seven days, inoculated with <em>Crithidia</em>, and then fed a wildflower pollen control diet for seven more days before assessing infection. We found that consuming a sunflower pollen diet before inoculation did not reduce <em>Crithidia</em> cell counts compared to buckwheat pollen. Further, bumble bee survival and consumption of sucrose solution and pollen did not differ between these diets. The results show no evidence of sunflower pollen providing prophylactic resistance against <em>Crithidia bombi </em>infection, indicating that the timing at which sunflower pollen is consumed relative to exposure has important consequences for infection.</p>
