Psychological Well-being, Food Insecurity, Academic Performance, and Other Risk Factors in a Sample of College Students in Jordan during Covid-19

<p>This research investigated the occurrence of psychological well-being perception and its relationship with food insecurity, academic performance, and other correlates in a sample of university students in Amman, Jordan during Covid-19. A cross-sectional study was conducted in two phases. Phase-1 translated and validated an Arabic version of the Psychological General Wellbeing Index-Short version (PGWB-S) in 122 students from the University of Jordan. In Phase-2, 414 students completed demographic questionnaire, Arabic Versions of the PGWB-S, Ryff Psychological Wellbeing Scale, and Individual Food Insecurity Experience Scale.</p> <p>Ethical considerations: This manuscript has been read and approved by all authors. The authors confirm that there are no other persons, who satisfied the criteria for authorship, but are not listed. The order of authors listed in the manuscript has been approved by all of them. Risk Factors that modify the familial aggregation for ischemic cardiovascular illness

<p><strong>Introduction:</strong> Ischemic cardiovascular disease is a global health problem. <strong>Objective:</strong> To determine the risk factors that modified the familial aggregation for ischemic cardiovascular disease in affected individuals. <strong>Material and Methods:</strong> An observational, analytical, longitudinal and retrospective case/control study was carried out from the population of the Banes municipality, Holgu&iacute;n province during May 2020-May 2022. The universe included all the diagnosed individuals and their families. By simple random sampling, the sample (149 cases) was obtained and the control group was formed at a ratio of 3:1 (447 individuals with no history of disease). The bioethical requirements were met. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied. The statistics were used: Chi square, Odd Ratio (OR), including p and confidence interval. The variables were operationalized: age, degree of consanguinity and risk factors. The family tree was obtained. <strong>Results:</strong> The relatives of first and second degree of consanguinity showed the highest incidence of disease. The age group 60-69 years was more affected. Familial aggregation for the disease was demonstrated (X<sup>2</sup>=45.93 OR=5.85 99.9% CI (3.29; 10.41)). Ischemic cardiomyopathy (43.3%) and arrhythmias (20.7%) were notable forms of presentation. The risk factors showed an association for the disease (X<sup>2</sup>=67.11 p &le;0.001). Arterial hypertension (X<sup>2</sup>=57.9 OR=3.04 99.9% CI (2.27; 4.06)) and smoking (X<sup>2</sup>=45.7 OR=2.66 99.9% CI (2.3 ; 5,6)) expressed a highly significant association for ischemic cardiovascular disease. <strong>Conclusions:</strong> The risk factors: arterial hypertension, smoking and family history modified the family aggregation for ischemic cardiovascular disease.</p>

Staphylococcus aureus VCF files: Risk Factors for Recurrent Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia

<p>Background: To understand the clinical, bacterial, and host characteristics associated with recurrent Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (R-SAB), patients with R-SAB were&nbsp;compared to contemporaneous patients with a single episode of SAB (S-SAB).<br> Methods: All SAB isolates underwent spa genotyping. All isolates from R-SAB patients underwent Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE). PFGE-indistinguishable pairs from 40&nbsp;patients underwent whole genome sequencing (WGS). Acute phase plasma from R-SAB and S-SAB patients was matched 1:1 for age, race, gender, and bacterial genotype and&nbsp;underwent cytokine quantification using 25-analyte multiplex bead array.&nbsp;Results: R-SAB occurred in 69 (9.1%) of the 756 study patients. Of the 69 patients, 30 experienced relapse (43.5%) and 39 reinfection (56.5%). Age, race, hemodialysis&nbsp;dependence, presence of foreign body, MRSA, and persistent bacteremia were individually associated with likelihood of recurrence. Multivariate risk modeling revealed that African&nbsp;American (AA) hemodialysis patients were nearly two times more likely (OR = 9.652 [5.402 &ndash; 17.418]) than White hemodialysis patients (OR = 4.53 [1.696 &ndash; 10.879]) to experience&nbsp;R-SAB. WGS confirmed PFGE interpretations in all cases. Median RANTES levels in acute phase plasma from the initial episode of SAB were higher in R-SAB than in matched S-SAB controls ( P = 0.0053, False Discovery Rate &lt; 0.10).&nbsp; &nbsp;<br> Conclusion: This study identified several risk factors for R-SAB. The largest risk for R-SAB is among AA hemodialysis patients. Higher RANTES levels in R-SAB compared to<br> matched controls warrants further study.</p>

Risk factors for non-communicable diseases in Bangladesh: Findings of the population-based cross-sectional national survey 2018

<p><span><strong><span>Objectives:</span></strong> To determine the national prevalence of risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCD) in the adult population of Bangladesh. </span></p> <p><span><strong><span>Design: The study was a </span></strong>population-based national cross-sectional study.</span></p> <p><span><strong><span>Setting:</span></strong> This study used 496 primary sampling units (PSUs) developed by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. The PSUs were equally allocated to each division and urban and rural stratum within each division.</span></p> <p><span><strong><span>Participants:</span></strong> The participants were adults aged 18-69 years, who were usual residents of the households for at least six months, and stayed the night before the survey. Out of 9900 participants, 8185 (82.7%) completed STEP-1 and STEP-2, and 7208 took part in STEP-3. </span></p> <p><span><b>Primary and secondary outcome:</b> The prevalence of behavioral, physical, and biochemical risk factors of NCD. Data were weighted to generate national estimates.</span></p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Tobacco use was significantly (p&lt;0.05) higher in the rural (45.2%) than the urban (38.8%) population. Inadequate fruit/vegetable intake was significantly (P&lt;0.05) higher in the urban (92.1%) than in the rural (88.9%) population. The mean salt intake per day was higher in the rural (9.0 gm) than urban (8.9 gm) population. Among all, 3.0% had no, 70.9% had 1-2, and 26.2% had ≥3 NCD risk factors. The urban population was more likely to have insufficient physical activity (AOR: 1.2, 95% CI: 1.2–1.2), obesity (AOR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.5–1.5), hypertension (AOR: 1.3, 95% CI: 1.3–1.3), diabetes (AOR: 1.6, 95% CI: 1.6–1.6), and hyperglycemia (AOR: 1.1, 95% CI: 1.1–1.1).</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Considering the high prevalence of the behavioral, physical, and biochemical risk factors, diverse population and high-risk group targeted interventions are essential to combat the rising burden of NCDs. </p>

Data from: Profile of and risk factors for post-stroke cognitive impairment in diverse ethno-regional groups

OBJECTIVE: To address the variability in prevalence estimates and inconsistencies in potential risk factors for post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) using a standardised approach and individual participant data (IPD) from international cohorts in the STROKOG consortium. METHODS: We harmonised data from thirteen studies based in eight countries. Neuropsychological test scores 2 to 6 months after stroke or TIA and appropriate normative data were used to calculate standardised cognitive domain scores. Domain-specific impairment was based on percentile cut-offs from normative groups, and associations between domain scores and risk factors were examined using one-stage IPD meta-analysis. RESULTS: In a combined sample of 3,146 participants admitted to hospital for stroke (97%) or TIA (3%), 44% were impaired in global cognition and 30–35% in individual domains 2 to 6 months after the index event. Diabetes and a history of past stroke were strongly associated with poorer cognitive function after covariate adjustments; hypertension, smoking and atrial fibrillation had weaker domain-specific associations. While there were no significant differences in domain impairment among ethno-racial groups, some inter-ethnic differences were found in the effects of risk factors on cognition. CONCLUSIONS: This paper confirms the high prevalence of PSCI in diverse populations, highlights common risk factors, in particular diabetes, and points to ethno-racial differences which warrant attention in the development of prevention strategies.

Risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults with type 1 diabetes: findings from prospective real-life T1D exchange registry

<p>Context</p> <p>Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of mortality in adults with type 1 diabetes.</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>We prospectively evaluated CVD risk factors in a large, contemporary cohort of adults with type 1 diabetes living in the United States.</p> <p>Design</p> <p>Observational study of CVD and CVD risk factors over a median of 5.3 years.</p> <p>Setting</p> <p>The T1D Exchange clinic network.</p> <p>Patients</p> <p>Adults (age ≥18 years) with type 1 diabetes and without known CVD diagnosed before or at enrollment.</p> <p>Main Outcome Measure</p> <p>Associations between CVD risk factors and incident CVD were assessed by multivariable logistic regression.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The study included 8,727 participants (53% female, 88% non-Hispanic white, median age 33 years [IQR=21, 48], type 1 diabetes duration 16 years [IQR=9, 26]). At enrollment, median HbA1c was 7.6% (66 mmol/mol) [IQR=6.9 (52), 8.6 (70)], 33% used a statin, and 37% used blood pressure medication. Over a mean follow-up of 4.6 years, 325 (3.7%) participants developed incident CVD. Ischemic heart disease was the most common CVD event. Increasing age, BMI, HbA1c, presence of hypertension and dyslipidemia, increasing duration of diabetes, and diabetic nephropathy were associated with increased risk for CVD. There were no significant gender differences in CVD risk.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>HbA1c, hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetic nephropathy are important risk factors for CVD in adults with type 1 diabetes. A longer follow-up is likely required to assess the impact of other traditional CVD risk factors on incident CVD in the current era.</p>

Replication data for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: identifying information sources and risk factor awareness among the general population

<p>Creating awareness about a disorder is important for prevention from the perspective of public health. However, for sports injuries, like the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, there is no study which has investigated the awareness of risk factors for the injury and prevention methods among the general population, to the best of our knowledge. The sources of information among the population are also unclear. The purpose of present study was to identify these aspects of public awareness about the ACL injury.</p> <p>A questionnaire was randomly distributed among the general population registered with a web based questionnaire supplier, to recruit 900 participants who were aware about the ACL injury. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: Question 1 asked them about their sources of information regarding the ACL injury; Question 2 asked them about the risk factors for ACL injury. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the information sources that provide a good understanding of the risk factors.</p> <p>The leading source of information for ACL injury was television (57.0%). However, the results of logistic regression analysis revealed that television was not an effective medium to create awareness about the risk factors, among the general population. Instead “Lecture by a coach”, “Classroom session on Health”, and “Newspaper” were significantly effective in creating a good awareness of the risk factors (p &lt; 0.001).</p>
