Data from: The evolution of sex roles: The importance of ecology and social environment
<p>Males and females often have different roles in reproduction, although the origin of these differences have remained controversial. Explaining the enigmatic reversed sex roles where males sacrifice their mating potential and provide full parental care is a particularly long-standing challenge in evolutionary biology. While most studies focused on ecological factors as the drivers of sex roles, recent research highlights the significance of social factors such as the adult sex ratio. To disentangle these propositions, here we investigate the additive and interactive effects of several ecological and social factors on sex role variation using shorebirds (sandpipers, plovers and allies) as model organisms that provide the full spectrum of sex role variation including some of the best known examples of sex role reversal. Our results consistently show that social factors play a prominent role in driving sex roles. Importantly, we show for the first time that reversed sex roles are associated with both male-skewed adult sex ratios and high breeding densities. Furthermore, phylogenetic path analyses provide the first general support for sex ratios driving sex role variations rather than being a consequence of sex roles. Together, these novel results open a new research direction by showing that different mating opportunities of males and females play a major role in generating the evolutionary diversity of sex roles, mating system and parental care.</p>
Data from: The role of conflict in the formation and maintenance of variant sex chromosome systems in mammals
<p>The XX/XY sex chromosome system is deeply conserved in therian mammals, as is the role of <em>Sry</em> in testis determination, giving the impression of stasis relative to other taxa. However, the long tradition of cytogenetic studies in mammals documents sex chromosome karyotypes that break this norm in myriad ways, ranging from fusions between sex chromosomes and autosomes to Y chromosome loss. Evolutionary conflict, in the form of sexual antagonism or meiotic drive, is the primary predicted driver of sex chromosome transformation and turnover. Yet conflict-based hypotheses are less considered in mammals, perhaps because of the perceived stability of the sex chromosome system. To address this gap, we catalogue and characterize all described sex chromosome variants in mammals, test for family-specific rates of accumulation, and consider the role of conflict between the sexes or within the genome in the evolution of these systems. We identify 152 species with sex chromosomes that differ from the ancestral state and find evidence for different rates of ancestral to derived transitions among families. Sex chromosome-autosome fusions account for 80% of all variants whereas documented sex chromosome fissions are limited to three species. We propose that meiotic drive and drive suppression provide viable explanations for the evolution of many of these variant systems, particularly those involving autosomal fusions. We highlight taxa particularly worthy of further study and provide experimental predictions for testing the role of conflict and its alternatives in generating observed sex chromosome diversity.</p>
Key habitat for male Strix nebulosa (Great Gray Owls) varies across the diurnal cycle and reflects sex-specific role, data archive
<p>We used GPS tracking and remotely-sensed environmental data to evaluate whether breeding-season habitat selection by adult male <em>Strix nebulosa </em>(Great Gray Owls) (n = 19) varied across diurnal periods (dawn, day, dusk, and night). To address knowledge gaps related to nocturnal habitat, we also evaluated finer-scale, microhabitat selection by male owls at night. Here, we include both the remotely-sensed habitat data and on-the-ground microhabitat data associated with owl locations. Generally, <em>S. nebulosa </em>are associated with mature forests for nesting and meadows for foraging. Yet, in our study, owls avoided herbaceous wetlands during the day but strongly selected them at dawn, dusk, and at night, indicating context-dependent habitat selection. Moreover, owls avoided dry meadows at all times of the day, suggesting that wet rather than xeric meadows are important for foraging. Owls also preferred nighttime microhabitats that facilitated foraging, such as those with presence of primary prey and open understories dominated by graminoids and forbs. During the daytime, owls preferred higher canopy cover and areas with increased soil moisture, which likely provided suitable roosting habitat. Understanding of habitat preferences across sexes, activity periods, and other contexts can improve the identification and conservation of critical habitat for wildlife.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">In some species, sexual selection is stronger in females than males. In classically polyandrous birds, for instance, females compete for mating opportunities and males care for offspring. Sex steroids such as testosterone have been suggested to regulate the behaviours of 'role-reversed' females and males, but comparative studies did not find evidence for a role of testosterone in relation to sex roles. However, the large variability of hormone measurements across laboratories may prevent detecting subtle differences in hormone levels. To circumvent this caveat, I compared sex steroid concentrations of females and males of two closely related and cohabiting species with different mating systems, the classically polyandrous black coucal (<em>Centropus grillii</em>) and the monogamous white-browed coucal (<em>C. superciliosus</em>). Baseline and GnRH-induced testosterone concentrations were twice as high in female black coucals than female white-browed coucals, and the low pre-breeding progesterone concentrations of female black coucals were consistent with progesterone's modulatory role during agonistic interactions in this species. Baseline and GnRH-induced testosterone and progesterone concentrations did not differ between males of both species. This study provides first evidence that elevated testosterone is associated with sex-role reversed traits in females, whereas low levels of testosterone may not be necessary to facilitate sex-role reversal in males.</p>
Rapid evolution of sex role specialization in a hermaphrodite under sex-limited selection
<p>The evolution of separate sexes from hermaphroditism is thought to have occurred independently many times, and may be linked to the evolution of sex chromosomes. Even though we have a good understanding of the theoretical steps in the evolution of sex chromosomes from a hermaphrodite ancestor, the initial stages are still hard to study in animals because many well-studied animal sex chromosome systems are old. We addressed this problem by experimentally selecting a hermaphrodite via sex-limited experimental evolution for several generations, simulating the early stages in the evolution of a sex chromosome. After 14 generations, a fitness assay revealed evidence of incipient sex role specialization in the female-selected lines, presumably reflecting the release from constraints usually imposed by selection on the other sex role. Importantly, however, this was not simply explained by morphology because testis and ovary sizes did not diverge among treatments. There was no evidence of a change in the male-selected lines. Our study shows that sex role specialization can occur rapidly as a result of sex-limited selection, which is consistent with genetic constraints between sex roles, and in line with the first predicted steps toward the evolution of a new sex chromosome system.</p>
