Estimates of surface layer net community production based on underway Lagrangian measurements of the dissolved O2/Ar ratio using Equilibrator Inlet Mass Spectrometry (EIMS), based on both steady-state and non-steady-state assumptions of the mixed-layer biological oxygen budget. Also included are estimates of the potential contribution of vertical fluxes: advection, eddy diffusion, and entrainment.

The ratio of dissolved oxygen to argon in surface seawater is frequently employed to estimate rates of net community production (NCP) in the oceanic mixed layer. The in situ O2/Ar-based method accounts for many physical factors that influence oxygen concentrations in the surface ocean, permitting isolation of the biological oxygen signal produced by the balance of photosynthesis and respiration. However, this technique traditionally relies upon several assumptions when calculating the mixed layer O2/Ar budget, most notably the absence of vertical fluxes of O2/Ar and the existence of a steady-state balance between net productivity and the air-sea gas exchange of biological oxygen. Employing a Lagrangian study design and leveraging data outputs from a regional physical oceanographic model, we conducted in situ measurements of O2/Ar in the California Current Ecosystem in spring 2016 and summer 2017 to evaluate these assumptions within a ‘worst-case’ field environment. Quantifying the magnitude of vertical fluxes and comparing NCP estimates obtained using steady-state versus non-steady-state assumptions, we find the importance of the non-steady-state term to be considerable, also observing significant potential effects from vertical flux terms, particularly advection. Additionally, we observe strong diel variability in O2/Ar and calculated NCP rates at multiple stations. Our results reemphasize the importance of accounting for vertical fluxes when interpreting O2/Ar-derived NCP data as well as the potentially large effect of non-steady-state conditions, including diel cycles in surface O2/Ar that can bias interpretation of NCP data based on local productivity and the time of day at which measurements were made.

Dataset and analyses for: Force-field perturbations and muscle vibration strengthen stability-related foot placement responses during steady-state gait in healthy adults

<p>We have collected kinematic data (heel and pelvis markers) from healthy adults during treadmill walking, whilst force-field perturbations and timed muscle vibrations were applied. We assessed the (after-)effects of these two interventions by evaluating foot placement control through outcome measures derived from a regression model which predicts foot placement based on the center-of-mass kinematic state. The data and analyses provided belong to the scientific publication: "Force-field perturbations and muscle vibration strengthen stability-related foot placement responses during steady-state gait in healthy adults". In the manuscript we place these analyses in the context of stability control and speculate on how these trainining interventions may improve stability control in patient populations.</p>

Investigation of damping effects on low-frequency steady-state acoustical behaviour of coupled spaces

<p>In the low-frequency range, the acoustical behaviour of enclosed spaces is strongly influenced by excited acoustic modes resulting in a spatial irregularity of a steady-state sound field. In the paper, this problem has been examined theoretically and numerically for a system of coupled spaces with complex-valued conditions on boundary surfaces. Using a modal expansion method, an analytic formula for the Green's function was derived allowing to predict the interior sound field for a pure-tone excitation. To quantify the spatial irregularity of steady-state sound field, the parameter referred to as the mean spatial deviation was introduced. A numerical simulation was carried out for the system consisting of two coupled rectangular subspaces. Eigenfunctions and eigenfrequencies for this system were determined using the high-accuracy eigenvalue solver. As was evidenced by computational data, for small sound damping on absorptive walls the mean spatial deviation peaks at frequencies corresponding to eigenfrequencies of strongly localized modes. However, if the sound damping is much higher, the main cause of spatial irregularity of the interior sound field is the appearance of sharp valleys in a spatial distribution of a sound pressure level.</p>

Data from: Stepping in the direction of the fall: the next foot placement can be predicted from current upper body state in steady-state walking

During human walking, perturbations to the upper body can be partly corrected by placing the foot appropriately on the next step. Here, we infer aspects of such foot placement dynamics using step-to-step variability over hundreds of steps of steady-state walking data. In particular, we infer dependence of the 'next' foot position on upper body state at different phases during the 'current' step. We show that a linear function of the hip position and velocity state (approximating the body center of mass state) during mid-stance explains over 80% of the next lateral foot position variance, consistent with (but not proving) lateral stabilization using foot placement. This linear function implies that a rightward pelvic deviation during a left stance results in a larger step width and smaller step length than average on the next foot placement. The absolute position on the treadmill does not add significant information about the next foot relative to current stance foot over that already available in the pelvis position and velocity. Such walking dynamics inference with steady-state data may allow diagnostics of stability and inform biomimetic exoskeleton or robot design.
