Application Of Substantial And Sustained Force To Vertical Surfaces Using A Quadrotor

<p><strong>One of the challenges in the interaction between aerial manipulators (drones with manipulator arms) and the environment is to maintain stability under high interaction forces. The dynamics of the system change, and due to limitations to the drone-platform-- the drone not being to apply sideways forces and having limited yaw-torque-- stability is not naturally guaranteed. </strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>In this video we demonstrate a new control approach to overcome these limitations. The video shows a quadrotor drone with manipulator pushing on the environment. More precisely, the stability is achieved using a state-feedback approach to compensate for the roll and yaw errors. This approach uses the linearized contact dynamics under pseudo-static conditions. The key element is that non-zero roll-states are used to compensate for errors &nbsp;&nbsp;in the yaw-state. At a certain point the drone reaches pitch angles of over 45&ordm;. Given that the drone has a mass of &nbsp;1.5 kg, this means that the drone is pushing with 15N(!) of force on the environment. The video demonstrates that the drone is easily able to maintain stability over a longer time period.</strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>These high interaction forces can be extremely useful when operating tools on the environment, as tasks such as grinding and brushing require sufficient contact pressure to function.</strong></p>

Near real-time ultrahigh-resolution imaging from unmanned aerial vehicles for sustainable land use management and biodiversity conservation in semi-arid savanna under regional and global change (SAVMAP)

<p>To prevent aggravation of existing poverty in semi-arid savannas, a comprehensive concept for the sustainable adaptive management and use of these ecosystems under unprecedented conditions is needed. SAVMAP is an innovative, trans-, and inter-disciplinary initiative whose goal is to develop a valuable monitoring tool for both sustainable land-use management and rare species conservation (black rhinoceros) in semi-arid savanna in Namibia. SAVMAP uses near real-time ultrahigh-resolution photographic imaging (NURI) facilitated by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) designed at EPFL.</p>

Use of Rice Hull Ash (RHA) as a Sustainable Source of Construction Material

Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;With the imminent shortage of natural resources, the need to find sustainable development is the highest in recent history. Therefore, this study examines the potential uses of Rice Hull Ash (RHA) as a sustainable cementitious material (SCM) in preparation of concrete. This study also assesses the use of RHA as an alternative of commonly used polymers in preparing high-grade asphalt binders. RHA is a potential sustainable solution because it is currently being treated as an agricultural waste material, yet its high silica content makes it a potential construction material. Three different sizes of RHA (600 &micro;m, 150 &micro;m, and 44 &micro;m) with two different partial replacement percentages (10% and 20%) of type I Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) were considered to prepare concrete and mortar samples. For the comparative analysis, two more SCM materials, namely, class C fly ash (CFA) and silica fume (SF), were also incorporated in this study. The results of the fresh concrete tests (slump, unit weight, air entrainment) and hardened concrete tests (e.g., compressive, tensile, flexural strength) have suggested that with a 10% replacement of OPC using finer RHA- modified concrete exhibits the improvement of concrete properties compared to the regular concrete. Based on limited test data of RHA-modified binders, RHA appears to be a viable alternative of commonly used polymers.&quot;</p>

Use of Ultra‐High‐Performance Fiber‐Reinforced Concrete (UHP‐FRC) for Fast and Sustainable Repair of Pavements

Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;This research presents a new methodology, which enables streets, roads, highways, bridges, and airfields to use an advanced fiber-reinforced concrete material, which can delay or prevent the deterioration of these transportation infrastructure when subjected to traffic and environmental loadings. The major problem of concrete is its considerable deterioration and limited service life due to its brittleness and limited durability. As a result, it requires frequent repair and eventual replacement, which consumes more natural resources. Ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHP-FRC) introduces significant enhancement in the sustainability of concrete structures due to its dense microstructure and damage-tolerance characteristics. These characteristics can significantly reduce the amount of repair, rehabilitation, and maintenance work, thereby giving the transportation infrastructure a longer service life. This research addresses the strong need to develop fast and sustainable UHP-FRC materials for pavement repair that can be easily cast onsite without special treatments. This avoids any major changes to current concrete production practice and accelerates the use of UHP-FRC materials. This research investigated a new method for concrete repair by combining precast UHP-FRC panels with a small quantity of cast-in-place UHP-FRC for pavement repair without any dowel bars. In this method, a precast UHP-FRC panel is used along with cast-in-place UHP-FRC. The vertical repair surfaces of the existing concrete are roughened on site. The outer edges of the UHP-FRC precast panel are roughened before they are brought to the site (no dowel bars are needed). The depth of the precast UHP-FRC panel is the same as the existing pavement thickness. Only a small cast-in-place UHP-FRC joint (one to two inches wide) is done onsite. The roughened precast UHP-FRC panel is placed in the repair area and cast-in-place UHP-FRC is cast into the joint. Experimental results showed that using a roughened surface (up to about CSP 5) provides a very large bond resistance, which is enough to prevent faulting.&quot;</p>

Toward Non-Corrosion and Highly Sustainable Structural Members by Using Ultra-High-Performance Materials for Transportation Infrastructure

Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;This research focused on investigating a highly sustainable and efficient reinforced concrete structural member for future infrastructure by utilizing emerging high-performance materials. These materials include ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHP-FRC) and corrosion-resistant high-strength fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. Four reduced scale UHP-FRC specimens were tested under large displacement reversals to prove the proposed new ductile-concrete strong-reinforcement (DCSR) design concept by fully utilizing these ultra-high-performance materials. Micro steel fibers were incorporated into three specimens and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers were blended into the fourth specimen. One specimen with ASTM A1035 MMFX high-strength steel rebars, one with high-strength glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars, and two with high-strength basalt fiber reinforced plastic (BFRP) rebars were tested. The beams had a reinforcement ratio of 14% to 15%. The test results concluded that the beams could sustain very large cyclic drift ratios without major damage in the UHP-FRC material, which provided ample shear strength and confinement to the reinforcement throughout the testing. Even with the high amount of reinforcement, UHP-FRC&rsquo;s superior ductility provided a very stable cyclic behavior up to some very large drift ratios. Because of the DCSR design, all specimens also exhibited a self-centering ability, which considerably reduces the residual displacement after being subjected to large displacement reversals. The test results also show that the high damage-resistance and self-centering characteristics of the proposed UHP-FRC flexural members can provide excellent resilience for building structures.&quot;</p>

BIOPLAT-EU: Target Area Base Layer providing statistical information on demography, employment and land use for sustainability assessment

<p>This dataset provides information on demographic variables related to population and employment as well as land use/land cover share on the basis of local administrative units (LAU). Within the BIOPLAT-EU project, this information is integrated into the webGIS&nbsp; sustainability assessment tool.<br> Main source of the administrative unit geometries is the spatial data set of local administrative units (LAU) (2016) provided by the European Commission (https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/gisco/geodata/reference-data/administrative-units-statistical-units/lau#lau19). The data set was extended by Level 2 administrative boundaries of Albania (https://data.humdata.org/dataset/albania-administrative-level-0-3-boundaries) and Level 3 administrative boundaries of Ukraine as of 2017 (https://data.humdata.org/m/dataset/ukraine-administrative-boundaries-as-of-q2-2017?force_layout=light)</p> <p>Data on demography (2016) for LAU + Albania was acquired using the Eurostat statistical database (https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/main/data/database). To calculate land use share for LAU and Albania, Corine Land cover (CLC) data from 2018 was used (https://land.copernicus.eu/pan-european/corine-land-cover). CLC classes were summarized into the following classes: urban areas (UrAr), forest (Fo), permanent crops (PeCr), annual crops (AnCr), permanent meadows and pastures (PeMaPa), industrial sites (InSi), water and wetlands (We), others (Ot).</p> <p>For Ukraine data on demography provided by the State Statistics Survey of Ukraine (http://www.ukrstat.gov.ua/) . To calculate land use share per administrative unit, the land use map produced by Myroniuk et al. 2020 (https://doi.org/10.3390/rs12010187) was used. Sustainable use of groundwater may dramatically reduce irrigated production of maize, soybean, and wheat

<p class="Abstract"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Groundwater extraction in the United States (US) is unsustainable, making it essential to understand the impacts of limited water use on irrigated agriculture. Here, we integrate a gridded crop model with satellite observations, recharge estimates, and water survey data to assess the effects of sustainable groundwater withdrawals on US irrigated agricultural production.  Our model agrees with satellite-based estimates of evapotranspiration (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.68<b>)</b>, as well as survey production estimates from the United States Department of Agriculture (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.82 – 0.94 for county-level production and 0.37 – 0.54 for county-level yield). Using the optimistic assumption that groundwater extraction equals estimated effective aquifer recharge rate, we find that sustainable groundwater use decreases US irrigated production of maize, soybean, and winter wheat by 20%, 6%, and 25%, respectively. Using a more conservative assumption of groundwater availability, US irrigated production of maize, soybean, and winter wheat decreases by 45%, 37%, and 36%, respectively. The wide range of simulated losses is driven by considerable uncertainty in surface water and groundwater interactions, as well as accounting for adaptation and the many aspects of sustainability, including environmental flows. These results demonstrate the vulnerability of US irrigated agriculture to unsustainable groundwater pumping, highlighting the difficulty of expanding or even maintaining irrigated food production in the face of climate change, population growth, and shifting dietary demands. Our findings are based on reducing pumping by fallowing irrigated farmland, so alternate pumping reduction strategies or technological advances in crop genetics and irrigation technologies could produce different results.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Linking governance to a sustainable future. A study on the use of e-government service among undergraduate students in a Chinese Municipality

<p>The data describes the survey in the study.This study devotes to promoting the sustainability in smart governance field through e-government services. It seeks to understand the situation of e-government use in a special group of future generation: undergraduate students. In order to achieve this object, this research conducts a case study in Chongqing, China. Drawing upon data from a sample of 1046 respondents in 2019, the findings reveal that the way to interact with government via e-government is receiving by a wide range of undergraduate students. Additionally, the results witness a rise of social media in e-government services among young generation. Based on all these findings, it offers practical suggestions to the future development of e-government services in China.&nbsp;</p>
