Warming effects of spring rainfall increase methane emissions from thawing permafrost: Site-level data from bog complex I - Water Table Depth 2014-2016

Methane emissions regulate the near-term global warming potential of permafrost thaw, particularly where loss of ice-rich permafrost converts forest and tundra into wetlands. Northern latitudes are expected to get warmer and wetter, and while there is consensus that warming will increase thaw and methane emissions, effects of increased precipitation are uncertain. At a thawing wetland complex in Interior Alaska, we found that interactions between rain and deep soil temperatures controlled methane emissions. In rainy years, recharge from the watershed rapidly altered wetland soil temperatures, warming the top ~80 cm of soil in spring and summer, and cooling it in autumn. When soils were warmed by spring rainfall, methane emissions increased by ~30%. The warm, deep soils early in the growing season likely supported both microbial and plant processes that enhanced emissions. Our study identifies an important and unconsidered role of rain in governing the radiative forcing of thawing permafrost landscapes. All site-level data from the studied bog, eddy covariance and micrometeorological data referenced in the published manuscript are available in the LTER data repository. Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Thaw Gradient: Geochemistry of soil pore waters sampled in May 2018 (0 - 20 cm depth) and August 2019 (0-120 cm depth) at Gradient site, 2018-2019

In this larger study, we are asking the question: Is old carbon that comprises the bulk of the soil organic matter pool released in response to thawing of permafrost? We are answering this question by using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure radiocarbon isotope ratios in soil organic matter, soil respiration, and dissolved organic carbon, in tundra ecosystems. The objective of these proposed measurements is to develop a mechanistic understanding of the SOM sources contributing to C losses following permafrost thawing. We are making these measurements at an established tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Field measurements center on a natural experiment where permafrost has been observed to warm and thaw over the past several decades. This area represents a gradient of sites each with a different degree of change due to permafrost thawing. As such, this area is unique for addressing questions at the time and spatial scales relevant for change in arctic ecosystems. Analysing the geochemistry of soil pore waters at Gradient site complements the overarching aim of this study. The dissolved organic carbon and mineral elements are determined in soil pore waters from sites of minimum, moderate and extensive permafrost degradation during the spring thaw (0-20 cm depth) in May 2018 and during late summer (0-120 cm depth) in August 2019. Soil pore waters were collected from sites approximately 15 m uphill of the highly monitored Gradient sites. The geochemical data was used to assess the mineral element-organic carbon associations in soil pore waters between contrasting sites of permafrost degradation.

ABoVE: Thaw Depth at Selected Unburned and Burned Sites Across Alaska

This dataset provides thaw depth measurements made at seven locations across Alaska, during August 2016, June and September 2017, and July-August 2018. Three of the locations are paired unburned-burned sites. At each site, three 30-meter transects were established and thaw depth was measured at 1-meter increments along each transect using a 1.15 m T-shaped thaw depth probe. Locations were selected to investigate fire disturbance, to span the range of permafrost regions from continuous to sporadic, and to cover vegetation types from boreal forests, tussock tundra, upland willow/herbaceous scrub, and lowland fen and wet tundra sites across Alaska. The data are provided in comma-separated values (CSV) format.

Maps of Vegetation, NDVI, Snow and Thaw Depths: North Slope, Alaska and NWT, Canada

This dataset includes vegetation cover maps, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) maps, snow depth and thaw depth data that were obtained as part of a biocomplexity project on the North Slope of Alaska, USA, and the Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada. In Alaska, seven sites are located along the Dalton Highway and in the Prudhoe Bay Oilfield area, forming a transect across the climate gradient of the North Slope. From South to North, the sites are Happy Valley, Sagwon (an acidic and nonacidic site), Franklin Bluffs, Deadhorse, West Dock and Howe Island. Four sites are in the NWT, forming a latitudinal gradient from South to North; the sites include Inuvik, Green Cabin, Mould Bay, and Isachsen.

ABoVE: Soil Active Layer Thaw Depths at CRREL sites near Fairbanks, Alaska, 2014-2018

This dataset provides soil active layer thaw depth measurements collected along transects at three sites near Fairbanks, Alaska, USA. Measurements were made during the late summers of 2014-2018. The sites were located at Creamer's Field, the Permafrost Tunnel, and Farmer's Loop (two transects). Vegetation ecotypes along the transects are also reported. The US Army Corps of Engineers, Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) owns and operates facilities at the Permafrost Tunnel and Farmer's Loop. The sites are suitable for manipulation experiments, installing permanent equipment, and establishing long-term measurements.

Annual Thaw Depths and Water Depths in Tanana Flats, Alaska, Version 1

Thaw depths and water depths were monitored at 1 m to 2 m intervals along a 255-m transect across an area of discontinuous and degrading permafrost on the Tanana Flats south of Fairbanks, Alaska. Measurements were taken once a year in late August from 1995 to 2002 to show effects of winter snow depths, climate warming, and vegetation and wetland creation-surface subsidence. Data are in a single tab-delimited ASCII text file, available via FTP.

Modeled Daily Thaw Depth and Frozen Ground Depth, Version 1

This data set contains modeled daily thaw depth and freezing depth for the Arctic terrestrial drainage basin. Thaw and freezing depths were calculated over the study area with a resolution of 25 km x 25 km. Data extend from September 1998 through December 2000. A finite-difference model for one-dimensional heat conduction with phase change calculates daily thaw and freezing depths, based on data of snow water equivalent, soil temperature, soil dry-bulk density, and soil water content. Arctic EASE-Grid Freeze and Thaw Depths, 1901 - 2002, Version 1

This data set contains mean, median, minimum and maximum freeze and thaw depths for each year from 1901 to 2002 on the 25 km resolution Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grid (EASE-Grid) for areas north of 50 deg. Freeze and thaw depths are estimated using a variant of the Stefan solution using an edaphic factor and freezing or thawing indices as inputs. The edaphic factor is estimated based on different land surface types; the freezing and thawing indices are from Northern Hemisphere EASE-Grid annual freezing and thawing indices, 1901 - 2002 (Zhang, et al. 2005).Two ASCII files are available for each year for freeze depth and thaw depth, respectively. Each file is approximately 25.6 MB in size. In addition, there is one 10.5 MB ASCII file defining the latitude and longitude coordinates for each grid point. The data set is available via FTP as three compressed files.
