Throughfall exclusion and fertilization effects on tropical dry forest tree plantations, a large-scale experiment

Across tropical ecosystems, global environmental change is causing drier climatic conditions and increased nutrient deposition. Such changes represent large uncertainties due to unknown interactions between drought and nutrient availability in controlling ecosystem net primary productivity (NPP). Using a large-scale manipulative experiment, we studied for 4 years whether nutrient availability affects the individual and integrated responses of aboveground and belowground ecosystem processes to throughfall exclusion in 30-year-old mixed plantations of tropical dry forest tree species in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. We used a factorial design with four treatments: control, fertilization (F), drought (D), and drought + fertilization (D + F). While we found that a 13 %–15 % reduction in soil moisture only led to weak effects in the studied ecosystem processes, NPP increased as a function of F and D + F. The relative contribution of each biomass flux to NPP varied depending on the treatment, with woody biomass being more important for F and root biomass for D + F and D. Moreover, the F treatment showed modest increases in maximum canopy cover. Plant functional type (i.e., N fixation or deciduousness) and not the experimental manipulations was the main source of variation in tree growth. Belowground processes also responded to experimental treatments, as we found a decrease in nodulation for F plots and an increase in microbial carbon use efficiency 25 for F and D plots. Our results emphasize that nutrient availability, more so than modest reductions in soil moisture, limits ecosystem processes in tropical dry forests and that soil fertility interactions with other aspects of drought intensity (e.g., vapor pressure deficit) are yet to be explored.

Terrestrial Gradient Throughfall Collections

To investigate long-term forest ecosystem responses to disturbance and stress along an elevational gradient, five plots were established as follows: xeric oak-pine at 782 m, cove hardwood at 795 m, low elevation mixed oak at 865 m, high elevation mixed oak at 1001 m, and northern hardwoods at 1347 m. Phenomena being studied in these plots include: climatology, nutrient dynamics, decomposition, vegetation productivity and population dynamics, and below-ground processes. As part of study on nutrient dynamics, throughfall was sampled weekly and concentrations and fluxes were examined from each of the five gradient plots.

Throughfall and rain event data, May-July 2014-2016, Hainich, Germany, project AquaDiva

This dataset contains throughfall and gross precipitation data used for the analysis published in Metzger et al. (2017) and Fischer et al. (2023). It gives spatially distributed throughfall evaluated at a rain event scale covering the following periods:

May 1 - July 26 2014

May 9 - July 28 2015

May 24 - August 02 2016

The two enclosed files cover the collected throughfall at all sampling points per precipitation event, and the properties of each recorded precipitation event, containing also gross precipitation.

The field site, sampling design data collection are described in Metzger et al. (2017) and used in Fischer et al. (2023). The sampling design is given in an associated published dataset Metzger and Hildebrandt (2023). For stemflow measurements on the same site during the same precipitation events, see dataset Metzger and Hildebrandt (2019), cited in Metzger et al. (2019).

BOREAS HYD-08 Throughfall Data

The BOREAS HYD-08 team made measurements of surface hydrological processes at the SSA (1996) and NSA OBS (1994) Tower Flux sites, supporting its research into point hydrological processes and the spatial variation of these processes. These data were collected during the 1994 and 1996 field campaigns. Data collected may be useful in characterizing canopy interception, drip, throughfall, moss interception, drainage, evaporation, and capacity during the growing season at daily temporal resolution. This particular data set contains the measurements of throughfall, which is the amount of precipitation that fell through the canopy. A nested spatial sampling plan was implemented to determine spatial variations of the measured hydrological processes and ultimately the impact of these variations on modeled carbon and water budgets.
