Tree-ring dataset derived from timbers of roof structures at Colegial del Salvador church in Seville and Jaen Cathedral (Spain)

Tree-ring dataset in Heidelberg format derived from pine (Pinus sp.) timbers of the roof structures at Jaen Cathedral (dendro code JCS) and the Colegial del Salvador church in Seville (code SCS). These samples were researched within the scope of the NWO-funded project Filling in the blanks in European dendrochronology. They are documented in the following article:

Domínguez-Delmás, M., Van Daalen, S., Alejano-Monge, R., Wazny,T., 2018. Timber resources, transport and woodworking techniques in post-medieval Andalusia (Spain): Insights from dendroarchaeological research on historic roof structures. Journal of Archaeological Science 95: 64–75. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jas.2018.05.002

This upload includes the supplementary material accompanying the article (tables with sampled elements on each building and their metadata). While most of the timbers from Jaen Cathedral are dated, only two of 71 from the Colegial are dated. If discrepancies exist between the metadata inserted in the headers of the measurements and tables uploaded here and the metadata on the article, the metadata published in the article prevails.

Original figure plates for "First fossil species of ship-timber beetles (Coleoptera, Lymexylidae) from Eocene Rovno amber (Ukraine)"

Original figure plates for "First fossil species of ship-timber beetles (Coleoptera, Lymexylidae) from Eocene Rovno amber (Ukraine)".

Abstract. A new lymexylid fossil species, †Raractocetus sverlilo Nazarenko, Perkovsky & Yamamoto, sp. nov., is described from late Eocene Rovno amber in Ukraine. This new species is similar to species of the recent genera Atractocerus Palisot de Beauvois and Raractocetus Kurosawa in the ship-timber beetle subfamily Atractocerinae, but differs in pronotal and elytral features. Notably, the new species is one of the smallest atractocerines known to date. This is the first member of the family Lymexylidae found in Rovno amber. Our finding sheds further light on the paleodiversity of atractocerine beetles, highlighting a peculiar distribution during the Eocene. Only one extant atractocerine specimen has been reported from Europe (Greece), while three species from Eocene European amber forests with equable climate are known now, including two species from the otherwise tropical genus Raractocetus. Our finding of the Raractocetus beetle from Rovno amber is of significant biogeographically because it indicates the wide distribution of the genus in the Eocene European amber forests.

Evaluation of DNA extracted from timber rattlesnake (Cotalus horridus) cloacal and blood swabs for microsatellite genotyping

Genetic research is a key component to modern wildlife conservation, but it is contingent on the collection of reliable and high-quality genetic samples. Invasive genetic sampling techniques have potential to negatively impact individuals, which may be prohibitive when working with threatened and endangered species. Prior to sample collection, project managers must try to balance the negative impact on individuals included in the study with the demand for DNA and the difficulty of obtaining samples. Although established methods for blood and tissue collection in reptiles meet the need for high-quantity and quality DNA, they inherently require longer handling times and more skill to obtain. Thus, non-invasive DNA collection methods, such as cloacal swabs, may be preferred when animal welfare is a priority. Cloacal swabs are quicker, easier, require less training and reduce handling time. To evaluate cloacal swabbing as an alternative to collecting blood, we obtained both cloacal and blood swabs. We extracted DNA from cloacal and blood cells that were collected from 23 Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus). We assessed DNA by purity (A260/A280), concentration, and microsatellite genotyping. Our results show high-quality DNA can be obtained from both cloacal swabs and blood samples, but quality and concentration of DNA was significantly lower from cloacal swabs. Further, degradation and contamination affects the performance of cloacal DNA when compared to blood DNA in microsatellite-based genotyping. Although we recommend collecting blood samples whenever possible to obtain the highest-quality DNA, cloacal swabs represent a viable alternative for genetic sampling when using microsatellite loci as genetic markers.

(Output Database for Selected Wood Parts and Timber Components: Moisture Contents and Temperatures, Moisture Induced Strains And Stresses And Crack Risk). The data include the material properties for green wood and selected wooden components, as well as the plans to collect environmental conditions and loads to be considered in the analyses for prediction of the crack risk of timber components under moisture variations. In additions, new results of scratch tests of wood and wooden components, supported by computed tomography (CT) investigations, are collected to define a model for shear failure risk to be added to the HTM computational models.

In D2.1, scratch tests carried out at VTT are described and their results are collected to provide information about the moisture effects of wood logs during cutting operations in sawmills, as well as on relevant fracture and shear properties for wooden components in sawing centres before using them to produce wooden elements of modular buildings in the production. The scratch tests are supported by CT tomography investigations and these results are also reported in the deliverable.

D2.1 is available here: <a title="Deliverable D2.1 "Input Database for Selected Wood Parts and Timber Components: Material Properties, Representative Environmental Conditions and Loads" " href="../records/10577505" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://zenodo.org/records/10577505

RK18 T00211 Timber - Face 2
RK18 T00211 is a timber found during the archaeological excavation of the Rooswijk in 2018. In 2017 and 2018, the shipwreck of the Rooswijk, a 300 year old Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship which sank on the treacherous Goodwin Sands in January 1740 off the coast of England, was excavated by an international team of maritime archaeologists. Post-excavation work began straight after each excavation campaign, focusing on ex-situ research, the conservation and analysis of the artefacts and will continue until the end of the project. The #Rooswijk1740 project is funded and led by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (Ministry of Education, Science and Culture), in collaboration with project partner Historic England and UK-contractor MSDS Marine.
