Abundance and biovolume of taxonomically-resolved phytoplankton and microzooplankton imaged continuously underway with an Imaging FlowCytobot along the NES-LTER Transect in winter 2018

These data represent the abundance and biovolume of taxonomically-resolved phytoplankton and microzooplankton imaged continuously underway along the NES-LTER Transect during cruise EN608 in winter 2018. Images were obtained with an Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB) sampling at approximately 20-min intervals from seawater supplied from 5 meters water depth. Data are provided for the subset of images during the cruise that were on the north-south transect along longitude 70 53’ W. Sizes for individuals were determined automatically by image processing, while identifications to morphological categories were done manually. Data are provided by taxon with names and machine-readable identifiers matched to the lowest taxonomic level to the World Register of Marine Species. Two data tables are provided: the level 1b for each occurrence and the level 2 that summarizes the occurrences by taxon per sample. Individual and sample identifiers are linked to images served by an external repository. This data package provides 144,281 machine-readable occurrences for incorporation into the Ocean Biogeographic Information System and the Global Ocean Observing System Essential Ocean Variables Phytoplankton biomass and diversity and the microplankton size class of Zooplankton biomass and diversity.

The species are those for which genome sequencing is underway at the Tree of Life programme, Wellcome Sanger Institute, as of 31st Decemnber 2020. The NEXUS file includes a figtree block&nbsp;generated in FigTree [<strong><a href="https://github.com/rambaut/figtree">https://github.com/rambaut/figtree</a>]&nbsp;</strong>that informs display of the data as a circular tree with species coloured by taxonomic Family, and Families with more than one species represented as triangles. fCO2 underway measurements during Mission Microbiomes aboard SV Tara

<p>This dataset compiles underway fugacity of CO₂ measurements collected during Legs 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 of the <em>Mission Microbiomes AtlantECO</em> aboard the sailing vessel <em>Tara</em>.</p> <p>The dataset spans from August 2021, starting in Martinique (France), to late November 2021 at the Brazil-Uruguay border.</p> <p>It includes time and location of measurement, sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, 10 m wind speed, bottom depth, equilibrator temperature, atmospheric pressure, molar fraction of CO₂ in seawater, partial pressure of CO₂ in seawater, and fugacity of CO₂ in seawater.</p> <p>This dataset has been submitted to the 2025 SOCAT release and is accompanied by the paper <em>'Exploring the CO₂ fugacity along the east coast of South America aboard the schooner Tara'</em>, submitted to <em>ESSD</em> by Olivier et al.</p> <p>Additionally, the dataset includes a metadata file (<em>Metadata_TaraMicrobiomes_ATLANTECO.xlsx</em>), formatted according to SOCAT submission requirements, providing further details specific to this dataset.</p> <p>The data is available in two open-access formats: CSV and NetCDF</p>

KM1906 Underway Thermosalinograph Data

<p>Near-surface temperature and salinity data for Gradients 3 (April 9th &ndash; 29th, 2019) were acquired through the use of a thermosalinograph (THSL) system aboard the research vessel R/V Kilo Moana. Data were acquired every second and water samples were taken over the duration of the cruise for calibration of the THSL conductivity cell. Navigation data (latitude, longitude, and ships speed) were recorded throughout the cruise every ten seconds. The THSL data were interpolated at the navigation data times.</p>

Gradients 3 Underway Optics

<p>Cruise Name: KM1906, Gradients 3.0.<br> <br> Project: Simons Foundation - Gradients NPSG<br> <br> A Wetlabs AC-S and ECO Triplet were plumbed to the underway uncontaminated seawater on the R/V KM.&nbsp; Data for each instrument were averaged to the minute. For the first 10 min of every hour, incoming seawater was passed through a 0.2 &micro;m filter (Graver ZTEC G series with Teflon O-rings) in order to collect dissolved &lsquo;blanks&rsquo; that were subsequently used to correct whole water signals collected in the succeeding 50 min of each hour. Filtered values were linearly interpolated throughout the cruise and subtracted from raw measurements to provide corrected chlorophyll fluorescence (volts), the particulate volume scattering function at 117 degrees (&beta;, m-1 sr-1), spectral particulate beam attenuation at 83 wavelengths (cp(&lambda;), m-1), and spectral particulate absorption at 83 wavelengths (ap(&lambda;), m-1).<br> <br> Chlorophyll fluorescence (Flchl) was calibrated to discrete extracted chlorophyll measurements collected at nighttime. Particulate &beta; values were converted to the particulate backscattering coefficient (bbp, m-1), following Boss and Pegau (2001) [bbp = 2𝜋𝜒p𝛽p] where 𝜒p is 1.1 for 117&deg;. Particulate absorption was then corrected for residual temperature and scattering after Slade et al. (2010). The dissolved component of absorption (ag(&lambda;), m-1) was calculated from filtered measurements using a pure freshwater blank and temperature and salinity corrected according to Slade et al. (2010). AC-S-derived chlorophyll a concentrations (Chla676) were estimated from the particulate absorption coefficients using the line-height method (Davis et al., 1997) assuming a chlorophyll specific absorption coefficient of 0.01178 m2 mg-1.<br> <br> Plankton abundance and carbon content was measured by a combination of continuous flow cytometry via SeaFlow which measures auto-fluorescing particles ranging in size from ~0.4 to ~6 &mu;m as well as an Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB) with imaging of 4-100 mm particles triggered on both scattering and fluorescence.&nbsp; For the IFCB data, particulate cell diameter was converted to carbon biovolume using allometric scaling (Menden-Deuer and Lessard, 2000) whereas the &nbsp;forward light scattering-biovolume relationship from Ribalet et al. (2019) was used to convert SeaFlow scattering per cell to carbon biovolume. Additional details of data processing are described in Juranek et al. (2020).<br> <br> Measurements of surface planar photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) were made using a LICOR quantum cosine collector (400-700 nm) and data logger (models LI-190R and LI-1500, respectively). The sensor was positioned 4 meters above the deck to minimize the influence of shadows from the ship&rsquo;s superstructure. Spectrally integrated irradiance was logged throughout the day and averaged in 1 min intervals. The diffuse attenuation coefficient for PAR, KPAR, was calculated according to methods described in Wei and Lee (2013), which calculates the average daily KPAR as a function of the sun angle at local solar noon, the total absorption coefficient at 490 nm, and the total backscattering coefficient at 490 nm.</p>

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset presents concentrations of nutrients (&micro;mol/L): nitrous oxide (NOx), nitrate, nitrite, ammonium (NH4), phosphate (PO4) and silicic acid (Si), measured in samples of seawater during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). Samples were collected from CTD and trace metal rosette (TMR) deployments, as well as from the underway water supply on board, then analysed by flow injection following certified standards.
