Proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS) as a tool for studying animal volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions
<p>1. Chemical sensing in vertebrates is crucial in their lives, and efforts are undertaken towards deciphering their chemical language. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a group of chemicals believed to play an essential role in a wide variety of animal interactions. Therefore, understanding what animals sense themselves and untangling the ecological role of their volatile cues can be accomplished by analysing VOC emissions. A Proton-Transfer Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS) is an instrument that measures VOCs in real-time in an air sample. Since this technique acts as a hyper-sensitive 'nose' it has a similar potential in deciphering the chemical language of vertebrates.</p> <p>2. Here, we validate the use of PTR-TOF-MS as a tool to measure VOCs from vertebrates, which in turn will help resolve vertebrate interactions through VOCs. The instrument monitors and records the full spectrum of VOCs emitted by an individual with a high accuracy and low detection limit, including transient VOC emissions. We propose and test diverse measuring configurations that allow for measurement of VOC emissions from different vertebrates and their exudates: full body, specific parts of the body, urine and femoral pores. In addition, we test configurations for sudden and short-lasting processes as VOCs emitted during adder skin shedding as well as the emissions of skin secretions upon mechanical and physiological stimulation in amphibia. Our configurations work in tandem with Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to allow compound structure verification.</p> <p>3. We discuss the configurations and methodologies used and conclude with recommendations for further studies, such as the choice of chamber size and flow. We also report the results of the measurements on vertebrates —that are novel to science— and discuss their ecological meaning.</p> <p>4. We argue that PTR-TOF-MS has a high potential to resolve important unanswered questions in vertebrate chemical ecology with great adaptability to a wide range of experimental setups. If combined with a structure verification tool, such as GC-MS, the creative deployment of PTR-TOF-MS in various future study designs will lead to the identification of ecologically relevant VOCs.</p>
PM2.5 composition and VOCs species measured in Tianjin in July-October, 2018
<p>This spreadsheet include the concentrations of water-soluble PM2.5 chemical species (sheet 1) and VOCs species (sheet 2) measured at NKUAQS site in July-October 2018 in Tianjin, China. The dataset was used to investigate changes in these species during tropical cyclone days with respect to normal days. Results were analyzed and presented in the paper entitled "Co-Occurrence of Surface O<sub>3</sub>, PM<sub>2.5</sub> Pollution, and Tropical Cyclones in China" (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2021JD036310">https://doi.org/10.1029/2021JD036310</a>).</p>
Facile synthesis of magnesium-based metal-organic framework with tailored nanostructure for effective VOCs adsorption
<p class="16">A novel Mg(II) metal–organic framework (Mg-MOF) was synthesised based on the ligand of 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'dicarboxylic acid (Bpdc). Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis confirmed that 3D-nanostructure Mg-MOFs formed a monoclinic system with a channel size of 15.733 Å × 23.736 Å. The N<sub><span>2</span></sub> adsorption isotherm, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were performed to characterise the thermal stability and purity of the Mg-MOFs. The adsorption studies on four typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during wood drying showed that Mg-MOFs have noteworthy adsorption capacities, especially for benzene and β-pinene with adsorptions of 182.26 mg/g and 144.42 mg/g, respectively. In addition, the adsorption of Mg-MOFs mainly occurred via natural adsorption, specifically, multi-layer physical adsorption, accompanied by chemical forces, which occurred in the pores where the VOCs molecules combined with active sites. As an adsorbent, Mg-MOFs exhibit versatile behaviour for toxic-gas accumulation.</p>

Dangerous Items Dataset for 5-Class Object Detection (Pascal VOC annotation)
<p>This repository contains the data from the manuscript "Dangerous Items Detection in Surveillance Camera Images Using Faster R-CNN". It contains 4,000 images representing 5 classes of objects: baseball bat, gun, knife, machete and rifle (<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aG30Hpupctnp8ywhAprz313jmYbFnZk3/view?usp=drive_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aG30Hpupctnp8ywhAprz313jmYbFnZk3/view?usp=drive_link</a>). All images were scaled so that the smaller side is no shorter than 600 pixels and the larger one is no longer than 1,000 pixels. The full set was randomly divided into training and testing parts (75% and 25% of the full set respectively). As a result, the training part contains 3,000 images, and the testing part – 1,000 images. Both parts are balanced, that is, they contain similar number of objects to be detected. Images were annotated using bounding boxes in the Pascal VOC format, according to which the description about each image is included in the corresponding XML file.</p> <p>Using this dataset please cite:<br>Omiotek, Z. Popular Animals Dataset for 6-Class Object Detection (Pascal VOC annotation)
<p>This dataset contains images used in the monograph titled <em>Zastosowanie wybranych metod uczenia głębokiego w wizji komputerowej</em> (Application of Selected Deep Learning Methods in Computer Vision) to build the Faster R-CNN model. The full collection consists of 600 image files showing 6 classes of objects: <em>kot</em> (cat), <em>krowa</em> (cow), <em>pies</em> (dog), <em>koń</em> (horse), <em>człowiek</em> (human), <em>owca</em> (sheep) (<a title="Popular Animals Dataset" href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g3O1Qq2YqmCb8WSMDHaoFJPoHe6yujlQ/view?usp=drive_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g3O1Qq2YqmCb8WSMDHaoFJPoHe6yujlQ/view?usp=drive_link</a>).
