Gesture Recognition with mmWave Wi-Fi Access Points: Lessons Learned~Dataset
<p>This refers to dataset of the paper Gesture Recognition with mmWave Wi-Fi Access Points: Lessons Learned to appear in IEEE WoWMoM 2023. Those files labeled with "beamsnr" correspond to 60 GHz while others with "data_processed" correspond to CSI at 5GHz. "ENV1" and "ENV2" represent two environments. "orient90" means user performs gestures 90 degree with respect to LoS.</p> <p> </p> <p>Abstract:</p> <p>In recent years, channel state information (CSI) at sub-6 GHz has been widely exploited for Wi-Fi sensing, particularly for activity and gesture recognition. In this work, we instead explore mmWave (60 GHz) Wi-Fi signals for gesture recognition/pose estimation. Our focus is on the mmWave WiFi signals so that they can be used not only for high data rate communication but also for improved sensing e.g., for extended reality (XR) applications. For this reason, we extract spatial beam signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) from the periodic beam training employed by IEEE 802.11ad devices. We consider a set of 10 gestures/poses motivated by XR applications. We conduct experiments in two environments and with three people. As a comparison, we also collect CSI from IEEE 802.11ac devices. To extract features from the CSI and the beam SNR, we leverage a deep neural network (DNN). The DNN classifier achieves promising results on the beam SNR task with stateof-the-art 96.7% accuracy in a single environment, even with a limited dataset. We also investigate the robustness of the beam SNR against CSI across different environments. Our experiments reveal that features from the CSI generalize without additional re-training, while those from beam SNRs do not. Therefore, retraining is required in the latter case.</p>
AccessFixer: Enhancing GUI Accessibility for Low Vision Users with R-GCN model
<p>Here is the relevant dataset and open-source code for the article titled "AccessFixer: Enhancing GUI Accessibility for Low Vision Users with RGCN-based Method"</p> <p><strong>Introduction</strong></p> <p>In this work, we designed and implemented a tool, named <strong>AccessFixer</strong>, capable of fixing GUI accessibility issues in terms of small size, narrow interval, and low color contrast. It can ensure the consistency of GUI visual effects in the repair process, and will not produce inconsistent components.</p> <p><strong>Functions</strong></p> <ol> <li><strong>Convert the GUIs screenshots to GUI-graphs. </strong>AccessFixer converts the GUIs into their corresponding GUI-graphs by parsing the XML file (in Graph_Presentation()), and meanwhile, our tool could remove all edges that connected the problematic nodes detected by Google Accessibility Scanner.</li> <li><strong>Pre-trained model based on Relational-Graph Convolutional Neural Network (R-GCN). </strong>Along with Capture_Signal(model), users can obtain the spectral signals of predicted links. Encoder and Decoder are responsible for generating new edges and scoring edges.</li> <li><strong>AccessFixer</strong> builds a mapping relationship between signal values and attribute values of GUI components in Attribute_Mapp(). Individual-plant selectivity by sheep in drylands scales-up at plant population level and controls the forage supply and its accessibility
<p>Diet selectivity by domestic herbivores controls plant community structure and dynamics and may induce rangeland degradation, particularly in drylands. However, management decisions frequently ignore herbivore selectivity. Here, we studied how grass morphology controls sheep selectivity for individual plants, and how this selectivity interacts with grazing intensity to determine population plant-size distributions and the forage supply. In Patagonian steppes, we manipulated the plant morphology (size and standing-dead proportion) of three dominant grass species differentially preferred by sheep for four years. Then, we evaluated how these morphological alterations affected intra- and inter-specific preference patterns. We also evaluated how grazing intensity (ungrazed, moderate grazing, and intensive grazing) affected the plant-size distribution of the three species, the forage supply, and its accessibility. For the highly preferred species, herbivores selected plants that were either naturally or experimentally short, with low proportion of standing-dead biomass. In contrast, morphological changes did not alter the within-species selectivity of the least preferred species. Grazing intensity strongly changed the population plant-size distribution of preferred species in ways that resembled the experimental manipulations of morphology. Moderate grazing showed the greatest morphological heterogeneity among individuals. When integrating the green biomass of forage species' individuals at ecosystem level, we found that the forage supply was the highest in ungrazed sites and decreased as grazing intensity increased. However, considering the dissuading effect of the standing-dead proportion of plants, the accessible forage was the highest under moderate grazing.</p> <p><em>Synthesis and applications</em>. Our findings (i) showed that, within preferred species, sheep selectivity at individual-plant level is controlled by morphological characteristics that determine accessibility to green high-quality biomass. This effect was as important as that of species identity; (ii) empirically proved plant-animal positive feedback at individual level; and (iii) revealed how the individual-plant selectivity scales-up at population level and controls the forage supply, but also its accessibility. Our complementary approach generates critical knowledge for developing management practices to control key forage species defoliation and to adjust the grazing pressure to the offer of accessible forage, avoiding the common carrying capacity overestimation. These aspects are essential for sustainable production in grazed drylands.</p>
Nutrient supply and accessibility in plants: Effect of protein and carbohydrates on Australian plague locust (Chortoicetes terminifera) preference and performance
<p>In contrast to predictions from nitrogen limitation theory, recent studies have shown that herbivorous migratory insects tend to be carbohydrate (not protein) limited, likely due to increased energy demands, leading them to preferentially feed on high carbohydrate plants. However, additional factors such as mechanical and chemical defenses can also influence host plant choice and nutrient accessibility. In this study, we investigated the effects of plant protein and carbohydrate availability on plant selection and performance for a migratory generalist herbivore, the Australian plague locust, <em>Chortoicetes</em> <em>terminifera</em>. We manipulated the protein and carbohydrate content of seedling wheat (<em>Triticum</em> <em>aestivum</em> L.) by two means: 1) we increased the protein:carbohydrate ratio using nitrogen (N) fertilizer, 2) we sought to increase carbohydrate accessibility by grinding cell walls after drying the plants. Using a full factorial design, we ran both choice and no-choice experiments to measure preference and performance. We confirmed locust preference for plants with a lower protein-carbohydrate ratio (unfertilized plants). Unlike previous studies with mature wild grass species, we found that intact plants supported better performance than dried and ground plants, suggesting that cell wall removal may only improve performance for tougher or more carbohydrate-rich plants. These results add to the growing body of evidence suggesting that several migratory herbivorous species perform better on plants with a lower protein:carbohydrate ratio. </p>
Supplementary materials for: Actually accessible data: An update and a call to action
<p>These are the supplementary materials for the article "Actually Accessible Data: An Update and a Call to Action." The project contains three files:</p> <ol> <li>Colon-Karcher-Goben_Accessibility-of-Popular-Data-Repositories.xlsx shows the results of automated accessibility checks of seven popular data repositories in the United States and Europe. For each repository a search or browse page as well as a typical dataset landing page were selected and checked with two prominent accessibility tools AXE (https://www.deque.com/axe/) and WAVE (https://wave.webaim.org/). Checks were initially performed in Spring 2022. The reported (mostly unchanged) results are from tests on April 25, 2023. They were performed using Firefox 112.0.2 for Windows with both browser add-ons installed, AXE v. 4.6.3, WAVE v. 3.2.</li> <li>Colon-Goben-Karcher_Acessibility-FLOSS-Repositories.xlsx describes the treatment of digital accessibility in the developer-oriented documentation of six popular open-source (data) repository software projects. The project documentation was reviewed by two researchers with a background in open source software (Karcher as well as a graduate assistant at the Qualitative Data Repository) who looked for specific sections on accessibility and also used search terms to identify relevant sections. Single-cell chromatin accessibility profiling reveals a self-renewing muscle satellite cell state
<p><span class="TextRun SCXW101911863 BCX0"><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW101911863 BCX0">A balance between self-renewal and differentiation is critical for the regenerative capacity of tissue-resident stem cells. In skeletal muscle, successful regeneration requires the orchestrated activation, proliferation, and differentiation of muscle satellite cells (</span><span class="SpellingError SCXW101911863 BCX0">MuSCs</span><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW101911863 BCX0">) that are normally quiescent. A subset of </span><span class="SpellingError SCXW101911863 BCX0">MuSCs</span><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW101911863 BCX0"> undergoes self-renewal to replenish the stem cell pool, but the features that identify and define self-renewing </span><span class="SpellingError SCXW101911863 BCX0">MuSCs</span><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW101911863 BCX0"> remain to be elucidated. Here, through single-cell chromatin accessibility analysis, we reveal the self-renewal versus differentiation trajectories of </span><span class="SpellingError SCXW101911863 BCX0">MuSCs</span><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW101911863 BCX0"> over the course of regeneration in vivo. Raw data: Potential of different common (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) and Tartary (Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn.) buckwheat accessions to sustainably manage surrounding weeds
<p>Twenty-nine accessions of two buckwheat species (<em>Fagopyrum esculentum</em> Moench (common buckwheat) and <em>Fagopyrum tataricum</em> (L.) Gaertn. (Tartary buckwheat) were evaluated for their allelopathic potential against two resistant weeds, i.e. the monocot <em>Lolium rigidum</em> Gaud. and the dicot <em>Portulaca oleracea</em> L. The bulking use of synthetic herbicides and their consequent contamination of the environment and resulting increment of resistant weeds, imminently requires a solution to achieve sustainable weed management without the use of chemical inputs. The results obtained in this study suggest that buckwheat accessions can sustainably manage weeds through plant interference as competition or allelopathy. This research showed that accessions differ in their potential for sustainably manage both weeds, with <em>F. esculentum</em> accessions being more effective against <em>L. rigidum</em> and <em>F. tataricum</em> accessions against both, monocot and dicot weeds. The chemical profile of buckwheat accessions was evaluated to know the content of polyphenols in common and Tartary buckwheat accessions and to know more about their ability to sustainably manage weeds. Differences in the chemical profile between the two buckwheat species were clear. While common buckwheat accessions showed more orientin, vitexin and hyperoside, Tartary buckwheat accessions had higher amounts of rutin, quercetin and kaempferol. We propose that the screening and selection of accessions with strong polyphenol content and vigorous growth can be a step towards organic farming due to its relation to the weed management.</p>
Human OPRM1 and murine Oprm1 promoter driven viral constructs for genetic access to μ-opioidergic cell-types
<p>With concurrent global epidemics of chronic pain and opioid use disorders, there is a critical need to identify, target and manipulate specific cell populations expressing the mu-opioid receptor (MOR). However, available tools and transgenic models for gaining long-term genetic access to MOR+ neural cell-types and circuits involved in modulating pain, analgesia and addiction across species are limited. To address this, we developed a catalog of MOR promoter (<em>MORp</em>) based constructs packaged into adeno-associated viral vectors that drive transgene expression in MOR+ cells. <em>MORp</em> constructs designed from promoter regions upstream of the mouse <em>Oprm1</em> gene (<em>mMORp</em>) were validated for transduction efficiency and selectivity in endogenous MOR+ neurons in the brain, spinal cord, and periphery of mice, with additional studies revealing robust expression in rats, shrews, and human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived nociceptors. The use of <em>mMORp</em> for <em>in vivo</em> fiber photometry, behavioral chemogenetics, and intersectional genetic strategies is also demonstrated. Lastly, a human designed <em>MORp</em> (<em>hMORp</em>) efficiently transduced macaque cortical <em>OPRM1</em>+ cells. Together, our <em>MORp</em> toolkit provides researchers cell-type specific genetic access to target and functionally manipulate mu-opioidergic neurons across a range of vertebrate species and translational models for pain, addiction, and neuropsychiatric disorders.</p>
ACCESS-OM2 1° resolution global repeat decade forcing control simulation data for 1972-2018
<p>This data set contains <strong>control </strong>simulation output from the global ocean-sea ice model ACCESS-OM2 in the 1° horizontal configuration over the period 1972-2018.</p> <p>The model was spun-up using modified repeat decade forcing for the period 1962-1971 to equilibrate the ocean to this period prior to most of the anthropogenic ocean heat uptake. This repeat decade forcing simulation was then continued up to present time and relabeled as the control simulation. GEOLAB - Transnational Access project HSRTSUB - Resilient behaviour of stabilized and conventional high-speed's rail track subgrades under different drainage conditions and seat loads
<p>In this study, the shear strength of track ballast material is evaluated by testing different types of track ballast specimens, which was conducted in a Large-scale Triaxial Apparatus at ZAG ) that has a shear area of 40 cm x 40 cm and can accommodate specimens up to 80 cm high. It enable loading of specimens in simple shear mode.</p> <p>The tests, which were conducted within HSRTSUB project, include two different types of ballast, the fouled ballast samples and the clean ballast samples, and two different specimen preparation techniques (with and without compaction). The normal stresses used cover a wide range from 50 to 400 kPa.</p> <p>The European standard EN13450 "Aggregates for railway ballast" was used. This standard specifies the properties of aggregates obtained by processing natural, manufactured or recycled crushed unbound aggregates for use in the construction of the upper layer of railway track. DARTER: Digital twins for Accessible Real Testing grounds for automotive Engineers and Researchers
<p>The DARTER dataset contains a sample (for now) of driving data (camera, LiDAR, IMU, steering wheel angle, etc.) without labels gathered at AstaZero's test track using the Chalmers ReVeRe lab's SnowFox test vehicle. DARTER stands for Digital twins for Accessible Real Testing grounds for automotive Engineers and Researchers. This research was possible thanks to the funds of a SAFER pre-study grant.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>About DARTER:</strong></p> <p>Verification and validation (V&V) of Intelligent Transport Solutions and their components in real traffic is difficult (costs, passers-by, etc.) and running tests under all possible conditions (weather, traffic, etc.) is impossible. For these reasons, controlled proving grounds and simulations are being used to safely increase the coverage of V&V. </p> <p>The DARTER project, a SAFER pre-study, addresses two issues connected to these alternatives. On the one hand, the limited access to real proving grounds and their corresponding high-fidelity simulations of academic researchers, key in evaluating the benefits and social and environmental harms that technological advances can pose.
