Target search and inspection strategies in haptic search

Haptic search is a common everyday task, usually consisting of two processes: target search and target analysis. During target search we need to know where our fingers are in space, remember the already completed path and the outline of the remaining space. During target analysis we need to understand whether the detected potential target is the desired one. Here we characterized dynamics of exploratory movements in these two processes. In our experiments participants searched for a particular configuration of symbols on a rectangular tactile display. We observed that participants preferentially moved the hand parallel to the edges of the tactile display during target
search, which possibly eased orientation within the search space. After a potential target was detected by any of the fingers, there was higher probability that subsequent exploration was performed by the index or the middle finger. At the same time, these fingers dramatically slowed down. Being in contact with the potential target, the index and the middle finger moved within a smaller area than the other fingers, which rather seemed to move away to leave them space. These results suggest that the middle and the index finger are specialized for fine analysis in haptic search.

The zip file contains all data relative to the publication. The structure of the data of all experiments is described in the README file.

A Scalable Data Management System Data Model facilitating the integration of any inspection system and the automated data digitalization process.

In the context of the EU-funded project PILOTING (No. 871542), a scalable Data Management System (DMS) was deployed and facilitated the easy integration of nine different robotic systems and various payloads and the storing of all the data observations produced during the inspections. In particular, a three-phase methodology was adopted for the creation of the DMS Data Model (DMS-DM) in order to define the architectural design of the DMS.
The first phase was to semantically define the entities of the PILOTING ecosystem, identifying assets and activities that were important to the data providers, and including them in the data model design. The second phase was to identify relationships between the entities, focusing on information that must pre-exist for entities to be semantically accurate, hierarchies between entities, especially physical assets, and the data needed to form the inspection plan. For the third phase, the information collected by the previous two stages of the data model construction was used to create the overall data model, taking into consideration the possible integration with third parties and the needs of the I&M Visualization portal.
The constructed document is attempted to present the designed Entity-Relationship-Diagram (ERD) of the DMS-DM. Additional definitions of the existing entities and the relations between them are also depicted.

Possibility of bridge inspection through drive-by vehicles

Based on virtual simulations of vehicle-bridge interactions, the possibility of detecting stiffness reduction damages in bridges through vehicle responses has been tested in two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) settings. Short Time Fourier Transformation (STFT) has been used to process the acceleration data of vehicles. The energy band variation was found strongly related to damage parameters. More important, initial entering conditions of vehicles are critical in obtaining vehicle responses through the vehicle bridge interaction models. Through different levels of road profile roughness, the offset distance needed before executing the vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI) modeling is obtained.

Cooperative UAVs as a Tool for Aerial Inspection of the Aging Infrastructure

This video shows the cooperative UAVs as a tool for aerial inspection of the aging infrastructure. In the presented approach the UAVs are relying only on their onboard computer and sensory system, deployed for inspection of the 3D structure. In this application each agent covers a different part of the scene autonomously, while avoiding collisions. The visual information collected from the aerial team is collaboratively processed to create the 3D model.
