Real-time Dense Surface Reconstruction for Aerial Manipulation

This video illustrates the content of the paper referenced below.

Reference:

Marco Karrer, Mina Kamel, Roland Siegwart and Margarita Chli, "Real-time Dense Surface Reconstruction for Aerial Manipulation", in Proceedings of the IEEE/RSJ Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), 2016.

Abstract:

With robotic systems reaching considerable maturity in basic self-localization and environment mapping, new research avenues open up pushing for interaction of a robot with its surroundings for added autonomy. However, the transition from traditionally sparse feature-based maps to dense and accurate scene-estimation imperative for realistic manipulation is not straightforward. Moreover, achieving this level of scene perception in real-time from a computationally constrained and highly shaky and agile platform, such as a small an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is perhaps the most challenging scenario for perception for manipulation. Drawing inspiration from otherwise computationally constraining Computer Vision techniques, we present a system combining visual, inertial and depth information to achieve dense, local scene reconstruction of high precision in real-time. Our evaluation testbed is formed using ground-truth not only in the pose of the sensor-suite, but also the scene reconstruction using a highly accurate laser scanner, offering unprecedented comparisons of scene estimation to ground-truth using real sensor data. Given the lack of any real, ground-truth datasets for environment reconstruction, our V4RL Dense Surface Reconstruction dataset is publicly available.

DINEOF reconstructed MODIS-terra 8-day composite of surface chlorophyll data

Sea surface chlorophyll data are the 8–day composite of MODIS–terra chlorophyll products from 2001 to 2019. The L3 data with a 4 km spatial resolution were extracted from 42°N-44.5°N and 65.5°W-71°W and interpolated spatially onto a 0.025°*0.025° grid. Cloud–free chlorophyll data were reconstructed using the Data INterpolation Empirical Orthogonal Function (DINEOF) method, which has been applied to fill the spatial gaps of satellite products without lowering their qualities. The original 8–day composite of MODIS–terra chlorophyll products are available at https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov. Only those spatial points without data due to clouds or sun glint are constructed using the DINEOF. chl_GOM_origin_and_DINEOF.mat is the surface chlorophyll data. lon_GOM_2D.mat and lat_GOM_2D.mat are longitude and latitude information. The data can be loaded directly using MATLAB (.mat file).

Data from: Avian surface reconstruction in free-flight with application to flight stability analysis of a barn owl and peregrine falcon
Birds primarily create and control the forces necessary for flight through changing the shape and orientation of their wings and tail. Their wing geometry is characterised by complex variation in parameters such as camber, twist, sweep and dihedral. To characterise this complexity, a multi-stereo photogrammetry setup was developed for accurately measuring surface geometry in high-resolution during free-flight. The natural patterning of the birds was used as the basis for phase correlation-based image matching, allowing indoor or outdoor use while being non-intrusive for the birds. The accuracy of the method was quantified and shown to be sufficient for characterising the geometric parameters of interest, but with a reduction in accuracy close to the wing edge and in some localized regions. To demonstrate the method's utility, surface reconstructions are presented for a barn owl (Tyto alba) and peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) during three instants of gliding flight per bird. The barn owl flew with a consistent geometry, with positive wing camber and longitudinal anhedral. Based on flight dynamics theory this suggests it was longitudinally statically unstable during these flights. The peregrine flew with a consistent glide angle, but at a range of airspeeds with varying geometry. Unlike the barn owl, its glide configuration did not provide a clear indication of longitudinal static stability/instability. Aspects of the geometries adopted by both birds appeared to be related to control corrections and this method would be well suited for future investigations in this area, as well as for other quantitative studies into avian flight dynamics.
