Dataset on an Evaluation of MCQs from MOOCs for Common Item Writing Flaws

This dataset is comprised of data collected from questions in 18 MOOCs in the areas of medical health education, life sciences and computer science. 204 questions were evaluated by two evaluators using an evaluation protocol from the literature. Over 50% of the MCQs (112) were found to have one or more item writing flaw; 57 of the MCQs contained two or more flaws. A considerable proportion of the MCQs were found to violate item-writing guidelines, which confirms findings of previous research in this area that examined rates of flaws in MCQs in traditional formal educational contexts. The issue of flawed MCQs can be addressed by training faculty in how to conduct quality checks before before and after their deployment. The data consists of an Excel file with several workbooks

DECISION Masterclass 2021 / How to write a good scientific paper (by Prof. Dr. Paolo Angeli)

https://decision-for-liver.eu/

The objective of the DECISION project is to enhance the understanding of the pathophysiology of decompensation of cirrhosis leading to acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) or death. This consortium will take advantage of already existing large and clinically well-characterized cohorts to ultimately develop prognostic and response tests and combinatorial therapies tailored to the needs of individual patients to decrease the risk of short-term death. In this Masterclass, invited speaker Prof. Dr. Paolo Angeli, the current editor-in-chief of the Journal of Hepatology (https://www.journal-of-hepatology.eu/), teaches his approach to #writing a good #scientificpaper and #publication and submitting it to the appropriate #journal, a process that he compares to the challenge of winning a soccer game. While focussing on concrete advice, he also points out several common mistakes that less experienced authors make, some of which can be easily avoided. How? Watch the video! The Masterclass is part of the DECISION project's training programme for early-career scientists and took place on September 8th 2021 near Barcelona, Spain, during the 3rd General Assembly (GA) Meeting of the DECISION project. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 847949. DECISION Masterclass 2021 / How to write a paper (by Prof. Dr. Jonel Trebicka)

https://decision-for-liver.eu/

The objective of the DECISION project is to enhance the understanding of the pathophysiology of decompensation of cirrhosis leading to acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) or death. This consortium will take advantage of already existing large and clinically well-characterized cohorts to ultimately develop prognostic and response tests and combinatorial therapies tailored to the needs of individual patients to decrease the risk of short-term death. In this Masterclass, DECISION consortium member Prof. Dr. Jonel Trebicka (EFCLIF member and head of the Translational Hepatology Unit at the Hospital of Goethe University Frankfurt) who also serves as the coordinator of the topically related Horizon 2020 project MICROB-PREDICT (https://microb-predict.eu) provides a step-by-step guide on how to write a high-quality #scientificpaper #publication #paper. His advice includes reducing complexity, focussing on key results, displaying the distribution of data points, as well as avoiding lengthy introductions, poetic language, or complicated sentences.

Artifact description for PMBS'23 paper: Calculating Primes the Expensive Way: A Case Study in Write-Allocate Evasion on Intel Ice Lake SP

The article investigates a new hardware feature introduced with the Intel Ice Lake SP microarchitecture that automatically avoids write-allocate traffic for streaming write accesses. The analysis uses the CloverLeaf benchmark code from the SPEChpc2021 suite and micro-benchmarks to assess the effectiveness. The artifact description contains scripts to make CloverLeaf a stand-alone application without the SPEC benchmarking harness and patches for code changes applied to the CloverLeaf benchmark code for the in-depth analysis. Moreover, depending on the task, there are scripts that gather data for multiple parameters, commonly thread counts.

All data collecting scripts produce CSV files for further analysis or plotting. For reference, the CSV files with the results shown in the paper are part of the artifact description. Moreover, the artifact description contains the TeX sources to plot all figures presented in this work. They contain the transformations done to the data (scaling from GByte to Byte, etc.) before plotting.

With a working installation of the SPEChpc2021 suite, an Intel Ice Lake SP system and applied patches from this artifact description, all benchmarks can be re-run and reproduce the data presented in this work. It is important to note that the write-allocate avoidance feature behaves differently on different Ice Lake SP chips. For a full reproduction of the shown results, one has to use systems with Intel Xeon Platinum 8360Y as well. Furthermore, for disabling certain hardware features like the hardware prefetchers, SpecI2M or other undocumented prefetchers, one needs root access to the system.
