Cf. Cat. Mus. Brit. 744.</p> <p>This commentary is preceded by a long preface, in which the author criticizes the works of his predecessors, Ḳuṭb al-dîn Shîrâzî(قطب المحققين) , Âmulî, and Ibn Nafîs Ḳurashî, and recommends his own work, on which he spent thirty years of his life. It begins: انت المستعان فى كل خير يا حيّ احينا بحياتك <sup>1</sup> . The name of the author is indicated by the following passage: اما بعد فيقول المباهى بنباهة اسمه العلى ‘ المتشبث باذيال الطاف سميّه الولى الخ. . The surname Gîlânî is given to him here in an inscription of recent date. As he mentions (fol.4) الشرح الجىيد للتجريد , <sup>2</sup> he must have lived at least as late as the ninth century. The preface is followed by a detailed list of the contents of the <em>Ḳ</em><em>â</em><em>nûn</em>.</p> <p>This volume comprises only the first book (الكلّيات) .</p> <p>It concludes as follows: تم شرح الكتاب الاول من كتب القانون بحمد الله .. و يتلوه انشاء الله تعالى شرح الكتاب الثانى الذى فى الادوية المفردة.</p> <p>Well written. A.H. 753). Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iv. 500.</p> <p>The preface begins: الحمد لله الذى وفت حكمته فى خلقة الانسان . The author, after mentioning the commentaries of Râzî, Afḍal Khûnajî, and Ḳurashî, lauds that of his master, Ḳuṭb al-dîn Shîrâzî, <sup>1</sup> to which the present work is intended as a supplement, especially as regards anatomical matters. He dedicates it to a prince, whose name is not mentioned. ‘Alî Gîlânî, in the introduction to his commentary (see the following no.) says that Âmulî-he calls him Muḥammad-wrote his work for the use of some princes (اولاد اهل الدول) , who had come from remote countries , in order to read with him the <em>Ḳânûn</em> , and that it was written in haste, without much care and preparation.</p> <p>The text of the <em>Ḳânûn</em> is introduced by قال , and the commentary by اقول .</p> <p>This MS. Two introductory treatises on Geometry and Astronomy, by an unknown author.</p> <p>Beginning: الحمد لله ذكر مقدمتین من الهندسة و الهيئة يستعان بهما على حدود الابواب و براهينها و بعض حدود و ذلك فى ١٤ بابا و خاتمة والله اعلم الباب الاول فى تعريف النقطة و الخط الخ.</p> <p>The first treatise consist of three, and the second (fol.32) of eleven chapters.
