Data from "Unraveling Cross-Border Climate Risks through Climate Storylines:An example from Europe's Cocoa Industry"

<p>The following files were used in the analysis in the article &quot;Unraveling Cross-Border Climate Risks through Climate Storylines: An example from Europe&#39;s Cocoa Industry.&quot;&nbsp;The traditional assessment of climate change&#39;s impact on agriculture, confined by geographical borders, is insufficient due to global trade, allowing climate risks to affect multiple nations. This study uses cacao as an example to highlight cross-border climate risks, showing their implications for the EU&#39;s chocolate industry. Concentrating on cacao supply from Ivory Coast and Ghana, the study models various warming scenarios, revealing reduced cacao yields in both countries. Under RCP2.6, Ivory Coast could lose around 7% of cacao production by 2050, rising to 23% at RCP8.5. Ghana might experience losses of 39% by 2050, with a potential extreme loss of 86%. A no-deforestation import policy further affects production, reducing about 24% in the Ivory Coast and 16% in Ghana. These losses possibly cause EU supplies to decrease by 8% by 2050 in the long term and up to &nbsp;20% in an extreme year. Predicted cacao price hikes of 30% by 2050 will cost the EU 2.5 billion euros annually by 2050. Extreme drought might elevate prices by 115% (RCP8.5), resulting in an additional annual expense of 10 billion euros for the EU. Findings indicate importance of addressing cross-border dimension in climate risk studies. These risks intensify with higher warming degrees, compounded by concentrated crop production, making countries dependent on these commodities highly susceptible to simultaneous, multi-location crop failures. Presently, EU trade agreements lack provisions for such scenarios. Given the increased likelihood of such shocks under a warming climate, more significant investment into disaster management strategies and policies is advisable.</p>

Data from: Macroecological predictors of evolutionary and plastic potential do not apply at microgeographic scales for a freshwater Cladoceran under climate change

<p>Rapid evolutionary adaptation could reduce the negative impacts of climate change if sufficient heritability of key traits exists under future climate conditions. Plastic responses to climate change could also reduce negative impacts. Understanding which populations are likely to respond via evolution or plasticity could therefore improve estimates of extinction risk. A large body of research suggests that the evolutionary and plastic potential of a population can be predicted by the degree of spatial and temporal climatic variation it experiences. However, we know little about the scale at which these relationships apply. Here, we test if spatial and temporal variation in temperature affect genetic variation and plasticity of fitness and a key thermal tolerance trait (critical thermal maximum; CTmax) at microgeographic scales using a metapopulation of Daphnia magna. Specifically, we ask if: (1) there is microgeographic adaptation of CTmax and fitness to differences in temperature among the pools, (2) pools with greater temporal temperature variation have more genetic variation or plasticity in CTmax or fitness, and (3) increases in temperature affect the heritability of CTmax and fitness. Although we observed genetic variation and plasticity in CTmax and fitness, and differences in fitness among pools, we did not find support for the predicted relationships between temperature variation and genetic variation or plasticity. Furthermore, the genetic variation and plasticity we observed in CTmax is unlikely sufficient to reduce the impacts of climate change. CTmax plasticity was minimal and heritability was 72% lower when D. magna developed at the higher temperatures predicted under climate change. In contrast, the heritability of fitness increased by 53% under warmer temperatures suggesting an increase in overall evolutionary potential unrelated to CTmax under climate change. More research is needed to understand evolutionary and plastic potential under climate change and how that potential will be altered in future climates.</p>

<p>This dataset contains data from an investigation to resolve the relative importance of multiple environmental drivers on the quantity and quality of chromophoric DOM in lakes at the continental scales. The study is described in the paper: "Du Y., Chen F., Zhang Y., He H., Wen S., Huang X., Song C., Li. K., Wang J., Kellings D., and Lu Y. 2023. Human activity coupled with climate change strengthens the role of lakes as an active pipe of dissolved organic matter, Earth's Future, in press". </p> <p>The primary objectives of the study were to (i) quantity the magnitude of environmental drivers modulating lacustrine DOM quantity and quality at a continental scale, including climate, land cover, societal development, and water retention time, and (ii) unravel individual and interactive effects of the environmental drivers.</p> <p>Firstly, we constructed a structural equation model framework that incorporated both direct and indirect pathways.</p> <p>Secondly, we collected a continental-scale dataset of lake DOM quantity and quality, along with the corresponding environmental driver variables from a group of carefully selected lakes (n=182).</p> <p>Lastly, we established structure equation models to analyze DOM quantity and quality variations as a function of the four environmental drivers.</p> <p>The main results include: (1) land cover and societal development both exhibit positive direct effects on lake CDOM quantity, highlighting the significant role of well-vegetated soils and anthropogenic activities as sources of lake DOM on a continental scale. (2) Climate has two strong but opposite effects –a warming and wet climate facilitates soil OM production and export but also enhances CDOM in-lake transformation. (3) Three proxies are proposed as indicators of the magnitude of biogeochemical drivers influencing lake DOM across ecoclimatic zones, including fluorescent DOM/DOC indicating economic activity, percentages of a degraded fluorescent DOM component indicating solar irradiation, and percent tyrosine-like DOM reflecting DOM processing time within the watershed and lake.</p>

Data for: Climate change alone cannot explain boreal caribou range recession in Quebec since 1850

<p><span>The contraction of species range is one of the most significant symptoms of biodiversity loss worldwide. While anthropogenic activities and habitat alteration are major threats for several species, climate change has not been overlooked either. For species at risk, differentiating the effects of human disturbances and climate change on past and current range transformations is an important step towards improved conservation strategies. We paired historical range maps with global atmospheric reanalyses from different sources (ERA5, CERA-20C, 20CRv3) to assess the potential effects of recent climate change on the observed northward contraction of the distribution range of boreal populations of woodland caribou (<em>Rangifer tarandus caribou</em>) in Quebec (Canada) since 1850. We quantified these effects by highlighting the discrepancies between different southern limits of the caribou's range (used as references) observed in the past and reconstitutions obtained through the hindcasting of the climate conditions within which caribou are currently found. Hindcasted southern limits moved ~105 km north over time under all reanalysis datasets, a trend drastically different from the ~620 km reported for observed southern limits since 1850. The differences in latitudinal shift through time between the observed and hindcasted southern limits of distribution suggest that caribou range recession should have been only 17% of what has been observed since 1850 if recent climate change had been the only disturbance driver. This limited impact of climate reinforces the scientific consensus stating that caribou range recession in Quebec is mainly caused by anthropogenic drivers (i.e. logging, development of the road network, agriculture, urbanization) that have modified the structure and composition of the forest over the past 160 years, paving the way for habitat-mediated apparent competition and overharvesting. Our results also call for a better consideration of past distribution ranges in models aiming at projecting future distributions, especially for endangered species.</span></p>

We performed and analyzed a suite of agent-based models that simulated the spread of an adaptation, i.e., a beneficial behavior, in a population with a minority and majority group, defined by group size and tendency to interact with others from one's own group versus another group (homophily). We ran 1000 trials per parameter setting, where parameters were systematically varied to test different homophily levels in each group, and the effect of whether the minority group, majority group, or both groups start with one member knowing the adaptation. The adaptation either spread from one agent in one or both groups to the rest of the members of both groups in the case of adaptation success, or the adaptation disappeared from the entire population (adaptation failure). We then calculated the success rate across all 1000 trials. We also measured the mean time to either adaptive success or failure.</p>

Data for: Genomic signals of local adaptation across climatically heterogenous habitats in an invasive tropical fruit fly (Bactrocera tryoni)

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Local</span> <span>adaptation</span> plays a key role in the successful establishment of pest populations in new environments by enabling them to tolerate novel biotic and abiotic conditions experienced outside their native range. However, the <span>genomic underpinnings of such adaptive responses</span> remain unclear, especially for agriculturally important pests. We investigate<span>d</span> <span>population </span>genomic signatures in the tropical/subtropical Queensland fruit fly, <em>Bactrocera tryoni</em>, which has <span>an </span>expanded range <span>encompassing</span> temperate and arid zones in Australia, <span>and</span> tropical <span>zones in the Pacific Islands</span>. Using reduced representation sequencing data from 28 populations, we detected allele frequency shifts associated with the <span>native/invasive </span>status of populations and <span>identified</span> environmental factors that <span>have likely </span>drive<span>n</span> population differentiation. We also determined that precipitation, temperature<span>,</span> and geographic variables explain allelic shifts across the distribution range of <em>B. tryoni</em>. <span>We found</span> spatial heterogeneity in signatures of local adaptation across various climatic conditions in invaded areas. Specifically, disjunct invasive populations in the tropical <span>Pacific Islands</span> and arid zones of Australia <span>were characterised by</span> multiple significantly differentiated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), some of which were associated with genes with well-understood function in environmental stress (e.g., heat and desiccation) response. However, invasive populations in southeast Australian temperate zones show<span>ed</span> higher gene flow with the native range <span>and </span>lacked a strong local <span>adaptive signal</span>. These results suggest that population connectivity with the native range has <span>differentially </span>affect<span>ed</span> <span>local adaptive patterns in different</span> invasive populations. Overall, our findings provide insights into the evolutionary underpinnings of invasion success of an important horticultural pest in climatically distinct environments.</p>

Data from: Lizard richness in mainland China is more strongly correlated with energy and climatic stability than with diversification rates

<p><strong><span>Aim</span></strong><span>: Contemporary environmental, historical, and evolutionary factors are increasingly used to decipher the drivers of spatial patterns of species richness. Evidence of such correlations for Chinese reptiles is scarce and poorly understood. We therefore explored the validity of the environmental capacity, historical climatic stability, and diversification rates hypotheses on Chinese lizard richness.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Location</strong>:</span><span> Mainland China</span></p> <p><span><strong>Taxon</strong>:</span><span> Squamata: Sauria</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong><span>: We mapped the distribution ranges of all 237 lizards in mainland China using a combination of different datasets. We used current environmental conditions (ambient energy, environmental productivity, and habitat heterogeneity), historical climate stability indices (long-term: since ~3.3 Ma and short-term: since the Last Glacial Maximum), and mean tip diversification rates to test whether current environmental conditions, historical climate change, and diversification rates drive contemporary richness patterns of lizards in China. We applied piecewise structural equation models (pSEM) to jointly evaluate our hypotheses, considering direct and indirect effects.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong><span>:  Chinese lizards showed latitudinal diversity gradients. We found consistent support for contemporary climatic and environmental factors' relationships with richness. Richness was also positively correlated with short-term climatic stability, but less so with long-term stability. Diversification rates were only seldom found to be positively correlated with lizard richness.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Main conclusions</strong>:</span><span> Our results support the</span> <span>environmental capacity and historical climate hypotheses, which link high richness to highly productive warm and stable regions (and low richness to cold and unstable regions). We conclude that post-speciation dispersal and short-term climatic oscillations quickly swamp the long-term signal of diversification rates and climatic fluctuations, creating strong current climate-richness associations.</span></p>

Data from: hibernation telomere dynamics in a shifting climate: insights from wild greater horseshoe bats

<p>Hibernation is linked with various hypotheses to explain the extended lifespan of hibernating mammals compared with their non-hibernating counterparts. Studies on telomeres, markers of ageing and somatic maintenance, suggest telomere shortening slows during hibernation and lengthening may reflect self-maintenance with favourable conditions. Bats in temperate zones adjust body temperatures during winter torpor to conserve energy and exploit mild conditions for foraging. Climate change may impact the hibernation cycle of bats, but more research is needed regarding the role of telomeres in understanding their response to a changing climate. Here relative telomere length (rTL) was measured in the long-lived greater horseshoe bat<em> Rhinolophus ferrumequinum</em> (n = 223 individuals) over three winters, considering climatic conditions. Cross-sectional analyses revealed between-individual variation in rTL with a strong year effect, likely linked to varying weather conditions and foraging success. Additionally, within-individual increases of rTL occurred in 51% of consecutive measurements, with evidence of increasing telomerase expression during hibernation in this species. These findings highlight the beneficial effects of hibernation on telomeres and potential consequences of changing climatic conditions for long-lived temperate bats. Understanding the interplay between hibernation, telomeres, and climate can provide insights into the adaptive capacity and survival of bat populations facing environmental challenges.</p>

A global hybrid tropical cyclone risk model based upon statistical and coupled climate models - Supporting figures and data

Data from: Elevational range sizes of woody plants increase with climate variability in the Tropical Andes

<p><strong>Aim</strong>:<strong> </strong>The climate variability hypothesis proposes that species subjected to wide variation in climatic conditions will evolve wider niches, resulting in larger distributions. We test this hypothesis in tropical plants across a broad elevational gradient; specifically, we use a species-level approach to evaluate whether elevational range sizes are explained by the levels of thermal variability experienced by species.</p> <p><strong>Location</strong>:<strong> </strong>Central Andes</p> <p><strong>Time period</strong>:<strong> </strong>Present day</p> <p><strong>Taxon</strong>: Woody plants</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: Combining data from 479 forest plots, we determined the elevational distributions of nearly 2300 species along an elevational gradient (~209 – 3800 m). For each species, we calculated the maximum annual variation in temperature experienced across its elevational distribution. We used phylogenetic generalized least square models to evaluate the effect of thermal variability on range size. Our models included additional covariates that might affect range size: body size, local abundance, mean temperature and total precipitation. We also considered interactions between thermal variability and mean temperature or precipitation. To account for geometric constraints, we repeated our analyses with a standardized measure of range size, calculated by comparing observed range sizes with values obtained from a null model. </p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: Our results supported the main prediction of the climate variability hypothesis. Thermal variability had a strong positive effect on the range size, with species exposed to higher thermal variability having broader elevational distributions. Body size and local abundance also had positive, yet weak effects, on elevational range size. Furthermore, there was a strong positive interaction between thermal variability and mean annual temperature.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions</strong>: Thermal variability had an overriding importance in driving elevational range sizes of woody plants in the Central Andes. Moreover, the relationship between thermal variability and range size might be even stronger in warmer regions, underlining the potential vulnerability of tropical montane floras to the effects of global warming.</p>
