e-shape P5.6 EO based phytoplankton biomass for WFD reporting - samples of Chl-a and WFD classes maps of lakes Lauwersmeer and Saadjärv

The current data set is a sample of the data generated within the e-shape pilot 5.6 called "EO based phytoplankton biomass for WFD reporting" and consists of maps based on earth observation (EO) data from the Sentinel 2 satellite. There is a set of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) maps, and a set maps of WFD ecological status of phytoplankton biomass, derived from the Chl-a maps by applying local WFD phytoplankton biomass thresholds. These maps can complement the monitoring for the Water Framework Directive (WFD).
The lakes within this sample set are lakes Saadjärv (Estonia) and Lauwersmeer (the Netherlands).

For more info please see the readme files which are provided with the data files.

The coordinates of each of 400 locations are available in "mapping_points.csv" file. All measurement data is also included in a single "AJ-6-03-31 Ellipsometry Mapping Measurements.rar" file.

Ellipsometer: rotating compensator GES5-E (Semilab).

Light source: 75 W xenon short arc lamp with 185-2000 nm wavelength spectrum.

Detector: UV-Vis CCD with 0.8 nm resolution.

Spectral range: approximately 230-960 nm.

Light incidence angles: 50°, 55°, 60°, 65°, 70°, 75°.

Light beam size: microspot (365 × 470 μm2 at 75° angle of incidence).

The same sample was also measured using the same spectroscopic ellipsometry method after being covered with hydrogenated amorphous diamond-like carbon and silver nanocomposite. Subset of 300 out of 3000 Prepared Sentinel 2 Scenes for Transfer Learning and Super-sampling.

This dataset contains a random subset of 300 out of 3000 Sentinel 2 scenes prepared for Transfer Learning and Super-sampling. It comes in the form of zipped NumPy arrays in the npz format. The files have are named in the following fashion:

latutide+latitude_decimals_longitude+longitude_decimals_month_of_the_year_for_mosaic.

Each file contains:

bands.npy: The Sentinel 2 bands in 10m resolution uint10: B02, B03, B04, B08, B05, B06, B07, B8A, B11, B12. The 20m bands have been resampled using bilinear resampling.

nir.npy: B08 Resampled to 20m using average resampling and then resampled to 10m using bilinear. Useful for training super-sampling models.

scl.npy: The Sentinel 2 Scene Classification file. Contains information on cloud cover and land cover.

sincos.npy: Contains the latitude, longitude, and time of capture for each pixel encoded to sine and cosine waves in the [0,1] interval. The is useful when training a model to predict where on the globe an image was captured.

The images can be processed to patches using the buteo toolbox:

`pip install buteo --upgrade

`import buteo as beo`

`beo.get_patches(beo.raster_to_array("path_to_bands"))`

Diet composition based on stable isotopic analysis of fecal samples revealed the preference of Black-faced Spoonbill (Platalea minor) for natural wetlands and fishponds

Background: Black-faced spoonbill (BFS) is a global endangered species, distributed only in the coastal zones of East Asia. Xinghua Bay is one of the main wintering sites and migration stopovers of BFS in mainland China. However, with the reduction and degradation of natural wetlands, it is uncertain whether the constructed wetland can provide habitat for the endangered BFS. Research on diet of BFS will help to understand their preference between natural and artificial wetlands, and also provide reference for their conservation and habitat restoration.

Results: In the early winter, the proportion of Palaemonidae in BFS's food was as high as 74.4%, while that of other food was only 3.0% to 6.0%. In the late winter, the food contribution of BFS was as follow: Portunidae 39.3% > Palaemonidae 26.1% > Cyprinidae 8.8% > Mugilidae 8.5% > Gobiidae 7.3% > Crucian 5.1% > Whiteshrimp 4.8%. The proportion of Portunidae exceeded that of Palaemonidae, and together with Palaemonidae, it has become the main food of BFS in late winter.

Conclusion: The diet composition of BFS between the early and late winter was significantly different, which may be due to seasonal changes in food resources. Natural wetlands are the main feeding grounds of BFS, but artificial wetlands also provide them with supplementary feeding grounds and resting places. Aquaculture ponds play an important ecological function in maintaining the overwintering population of BFS in Xinghua Bay.
