Facebook posts for analyzing Content Strategies for Digital Consumer Engagement: a curated dataset

<p>This database contains public data from publications made on Facebook by small and medium companies in the tourism sector operating in the Amazon region in&nbsp; Brazil. Dataset related to article "Acetaldehyde in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottledwater: assessment and mitigation of health risk for consumers"

<p><em>The file contains the raw data related to the manuscript: &quot;Acetaldehyde in Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Bottled Water: Assessment and Mitigation of Health Risk for Consumers&quot;</em></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong>: This study was designed to investigate the levels of acetaldehyde residues in polyethylene terephthalate bottled water and its significance in terms of consumer health. We analyzed 104 samples collected throughout Italy, so as to be representative of the national market. Parameters such as CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;level, shelf life, weight of the empty bottle and distance from the production sites to the point of sale were also collected. Although the levels of acetaldehyde complied with the limits established by Italian legislation, they varied widely, with concentrations ranging from 0.41 to 76.2 &micro;g/L. An assessment of safety for human health, using the margin of exposure approach, showed that the amount of acetaldehyde in bottled water is unlikely to be of any safety concern for human health. The acetaldehyde residues were mainly due to CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;levels which influence solubility of acetaldehyde in water. They are also related to the size of the bottle and the distance from the store, but not to the shelf life, at least for 40 days. The findings suggest some good practices for a better product from the point of view of public health, like polymer quality and limitation of transport distances.</p> <p><strong>Funding</strong>: This research was funded by Mineracqua.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

NIR-MFCO dataset: Near-infrared-based false-color images of post-consumer plastics at different material flow compositions and material flow presentations

<p>Determining mass-based material flow compositions (MFCOs) is crucial for assessing and optimizing the recycling of post-consumer plastics. Currently, MFCOs in plastic recycling are mostly determined through manual sorting analysis, but the use of inline near-infrared (NIR) sensors holds potential to automate the characterization process, paving the way for novel sensor-based material flow characterization (SBMC) applications. The NIR-MFCO dataset aims to expedite SBMC research by providing NIR-based false-color images of plastic material flows with their corresponding MFCOs. The false-color images were created through the pixel-based classification of binary material mixtures using a hyperspectral imaging camera (EVK HELIOS NIR G2-320; 990&nbsp;nm &ndash; 1678&nbsp;nm wavelength range) and the on-chip classification algorithm (CLASS 32). The resulting NIR-MFCO&nbsp;dataset includes <em>n</em>&nbsp;=&nbsp;880 false-color images from three test series: (T1)&nbsp;high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flakes, (T2a)&nbsp;post-consumer HDPE packaging and PET bottles, and (T2b)&nbsp;post-consumer HDPE packaging and beverage cartons for <em>n</em>&nbsp;=&nbsp;11 different HDPE shares (0% - 50%) at four different material flow presentations (singled, monolayer, bulk height H1, bulk height H2). The dataset can be used, e.g., to train machine learning algorithms, evaluate the accuracy of inline SBMC applications, and deepen the understanding of segregation effects of anthropogenic material flows, thus further advancing SBMC research and enhancing post-consumer plastic recycling.</p>

Food webs coupled in space: Consumer foraging movement affects both stocks and fluxes

<p>The exchange of material and individuals between neighbouring food webs is ubiquitous and affects ecosystem functioning. Here, we explore animal foraging movement between adjacent, heterogeneous habitats and its effect on a suite of interconnected ecosystem functions. Combining dynamic food-web models with nutrient-recycling models, we study foraging across habitats that differ in fertility and plant diversity. We found that net foraging movement flowed from high to low fertility or high to low diversity and boosted stocks and flows across the whole loop of ecosystem functions including biomass, detritus, and nutrients in the recipient habitat. Contrary to common assumptions, however, the largest flows were often between the highest and intermediate fertility habitats rather than highest and lowest. The effect of consumer influx on ecosystem functions was similar to the effect of increasing fertility. Unlike fertility, however, consumer influx caused a shift towards highly predator-dominated biomass distributions, especially in habitats that were unable to support predators in the absence of consumer foraging. This shift resulted from both direct and indirect effects propagated through the interconnected ecosystem functions. Only by considering both stocks and fluxes across the whole loop of ecosystem functions do we uncover the mechanisms driving our results. In conclusion, the outcome of animal foraging movements will differ from that of dispersal and diffusion. Together we show how considering active types of animal movement and the interconnectedness of ecosystem functions can aid our understanding of the patchy landscapes of the Anthropocene.</p>

<p>A ubiquitous interaction operates at the base of food webs in many terrestrial ecosystems of the world, creating the foundation for bottom-up regulation of consumers. This interaction plays out as follows. Populations of herbivores deplete plant biomass by foraging. Increasing herbivore population size intensifies this depletion, which in turn, creates a negative feedback regulating herbivore population growth. Large herbivores and the plants they consume offer a useful system for studying this interaction because populations of large herbivores are often regulated by density dependence, defined as the reduction in the per-capita growth rate that occurs as populations grow. Diminished body mass of individuals has been repeatedly observed in high-density populations, implicating plant-mediated, diminished nutrition as the primary cause of density dependence. However, there is no general explanation for why these nutritional deficiencies occur.  The data deposited here were used to demonstrate fit new model of the feedbacks from plant biomass to herbivores. The model shows how reduced nutrition of herbivores can result from increased dilution of metabolizable energy in the plant tissue they consume as populations grow even when a large fraction of the consumable plant biomass remains uneaten. This result provides a tidy, mechanistic explanation for bottom-up control of population dynamics of primary consumers in a "green world." </p>

Coastal Wetland Basal Consumer and End Member C-13 and N-15 Isotopic Ratios Across a Mangrove Encroachment Gradient, 2019

Foundation species support highly productive and valuable ecosystems, but anthropogenic disturbances and environmental changes are increasingly causing foundation species shifts, where one foundation species replaces another. The consequences of foundation shifts are not well understood, as there is limited research on the equivalency of different foundation species and the functions they support. Here, we provide insight into community-level consequences of foundation shifts in the Gulf of Mexico, where the typical marsh foundation species (Spartina alterniflora) is being replaced with a mangrove foundation species (Avicennia germinans), forcing marsh fauna to rely on Avicennia for foundational support. We evaluated the interactions of two common and ecologically valuable basal consumers, fiddler crabs (Uca spp.) and marsh periwinkle snails (Littoraria irrorata), with both foundation species across sites with different levels of mangrove encroachment. By investigating both physical support, measured as habitat association and co-occurrence, and trophic support, as basal resource diet contributions, we found that Avicennia can physically replace Spartina for some consumers, but is not providing equivalent trophic support. Uca and Littoraria commonly occupy encroached sites and associate with mangroves but incorporate almost no mangrove plant matter into their diets. The ultimate consequences of a foundation shift in the case of mangrove encroachment may include shifting energy flows and resource use and decreased populations of basal consumers. Looking at interactions with foundation species from multiple perspectives is necessary to obtain a complete picture of the effects that foundational shifts are having, especially as such shifts are becoming increasingly common.

Leaf decomposition in relation to resource characteristics and consumer diversity

Resource subsidies and biodiversity are essential for maintaining community structure and ecosystem functioning, but the relative importance of consumer diversity and resource characteristics to decomposition remains unclear. Forested headwater streams are detritus-based systems, dependent on leaf litter inputs from adjacent riparian ecosystems, and decomposition of these resources is an important ecosystem function. Here, we examined the effects of consumer community diversity on leaf decomposition in a reciprocal transplant experiment. We asked: (1) if stream consumer communities are adapted to local resources, and (2) how functional trait diversity among communities affects the leaf decomposition process. We did not find evidence that communities were adapted to locally-derived resource subsidies. Instead, we found that consumer biomass and functional trait diversity as well as resource characteristics were the primary biotic drivers of decomposition. Consumer biomass was stimulated by specific resource subsidies, leading to direct and indirect effects of resource subsidies on ecosystem functioning. Contrary to current theory, we show that decomposition was higher with decreased detritivore functional diversity, suggesting dominant traits encompassing a specific niche increased decomposition. We also show that top-down, consumer diversity effects can be equal in magnitude to the bottom-up effects of resource characteristics during the decomposition process. Our research illustrates the importance of considering multiple biotic and abiotic drivers interacting via multiple pathways to affect a crucial ecosystem function.

Linking Precipitation and C3 - C4 Plant Production to Resource Dynamics in Higher Trophic Level Consumers: Lizard Data (2005-2006)

In many ecosystems, seasonal shifts in temperature and precipitation induce pulses of primary productivity that vary in phenology, abundance and nutritional quality. Â Variation in these resource pulses could strongly influence community composition and ecosystem function, because these pervasive bottom-up forces play a primary role in determining the biomass, life cycles and interactions of organisms across trophic levels. Â The focus of this research is to understand how consumers across trophic levels alter resource use and assimilation over seasonal and inter-annual timescales in response to climatically driven changes in pulses of primary productivity. We measured the carbon isotope ratios (d13C) of plant, arthropod, and lizard tissues in the northern Chihuahuan Desert to quantify the relative importance of primary production from plants using C3 and C4 photosynthesis for consumers. Â Summer monsoonal rains on the Sevilleta LTER in New Mexico support a pulse of C4 plant production that have tissue d13C values distinct from C3 plants. Â During a year when precipitation patterns were relatively normal, d13C measurements showed that consumers used and assimilated significantly more C4 derived carbon over the course of a summer; tracking the seasonal increase in abundance of C4 plants. Â In the following spring, after a failure in winter precipitation and the associated failure of spring C3 plant growth, consumers showed elevated assimilation of C4 derived carbon relative to a normal rainfall regime. These findings provide insight into how climate, pulsed resources and temporal trophic dynamics may interact to shape semi-arid grasslands such as the Chihuahuan Desert in the present and future.

Replication data for: Consumer preference testing of boiled sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) using crowdsourced citizen science in Ghana and Uganda

<p>Crowdsourced citizen science is an emerging approach in plant sciences. The triadic comparison of technologies (tricot) approach has been successfully utilised by demand-led breeding programmes to identify varieties for dissemination suited to specific geographic and climatic regions. An important feature of this approach is the independent way in which farmers individually evaluate the varieties on their own farms as &lsquo;citizen scientists&rsquo;. In this study, we adapted this approach to evaluate consumer preferences to boiled sweetpotato (<em>Ipomoea batatas</em>&nbsp;(L.) Lam) roots of 21 advanced breeding materials and varieties in Ghana and 6 released varieties in Uganda. We were specifically interested in evaluating if a more independent style of evaluation (home tasting) would produce results comparable to an approach that involves control over preparation (centralised tasting). We compiled data from 1,433 participants who individually contributed to a home tasting (de-centralised) and a centralised tasting trial in Ghana and Uganda, evaluating overall acceptability, and indicating the reasons for their preferences. Geographic factors showed important contribution to define consumers&rsquo; preference to boiled sweetpotato genotypes. Home and centralised tasting approaches gave similar rankings for overall acceptability, which was strongly correlated to taste. In both Ghana and Uganda, it was possible to robustly identify superior sweetpotato genotypes from consumers&rsquo; perspectives. Our results indicate that the tricot approach can be successfully applied to consumer preference studies.</p>
